I really want to go too. Everyone has been telling that Madison is one of the great places to live and study, and I want to see if it lives up to the billing. I sort of wish I had more news from them about how things are going to stack up, but I'm very likely to attend.

Haha, I've actually become frighteningly efficient. I had the bright idea of taking three seminars and a linguistics class along with my senior thesis this semester on the genius idea that the extra work, especially reading, with professors I know fairly well (like I have all three rec. letter writers this semester) would keep my nerves down. Instead, I've got half my thesis written, with most of reseach, both primary and secondary, done, and good chunks of two of my three seminar papers. I'm even ahead on my reading, like two weeks ahead. So, instead of having alot of work to keep my nerves down, I have time to worry and fret

I know what you mean. Its like a constant feeling of being judged for everything you've ever done from afar.

I think week is going to be very busy. I've heard on here that Harvard and Georgetown are coming next week, anywhere else on the horizon?
-
Right now, other than my safeties (BC, BU, UGA, etc.), admittedly poor term, I'm waiting for Harvard, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UNC, Emory, and Michigan

I'm doing 19th/ 20th century American financial and cultural. Funding is dicey right now but I'm not too worried. Fortunately, I have no debt coming out of undergrad and even then, based on the numbers, one semester unfunded wouldn't be too brutal, especially since it looks like I'm headed to Madison
-
I wonder if Harvard is waiting until next week because they got an unusual amount of applications? If you figure that they were getting between something like 350-400 a few years ago, I bet there were almost 500 this year, given how many people up and decided to go to grad school, regardless of their chances of getting in. By the way, those number are just pure guesses based on the what I've read online, etc.

Thanks for that information. It might actually come in handy if things swing my way.
-
I know how you feel. I really like Michigan, but (assuming the stars aligned properly and I got in) my girlfriend would never be able to find a job there. Although maybe Ann Arbor is in better/ more stable shape compared to other parts of Michigan?

I'm one of the Wisconsin admits (full disclosure- I'm a little more likely to attend than others right now) but I've found the faculty very responsive since I was admitted, but they seem to be pretty busy individually. If you haven't had anyone reach out, it might be best to email or even call and leave a message.
-
It might have to do with some sort of FLAS fellowship, I know I don't qualify for one, so maybe that why the other admittees here or myself didn't hear anything, but it would make sense. Are you doing something exciting with some difficult language (if I'm not asking you to tip your hat too much)?
-
It hasnt come up in anything Ive said with my POC. As far as I know, reimbursement is only possible if you get a multiyear fellowship. Are you planning on going?
-
Maybe it was just a first round sort of rejection? I would love it if I was still under consideration, but was expecting a mass rejection like Yale had.
-
You could take this and literally apply it to me. I've gotten to the point where everytime I get an email (because they get routed to my phone) I check to see if its something. Even scarier, all my honor's thesis has made me do is be more efficient in working on it while freaking out.
-
American transnational financial history (Its not as boring as it sounds) The other half is essentially Britain and China, but I applied as an Americanist, since everything I'm looking at emanates from there, at least in my mind.
-
Hey, did anyone else who applied to Michigan get a way to check their application status? I know that they aren't supposed to report for a few weeks still, but I never received a confirmation number or something like that.
-
Haha, that makes sense. Sorry about the rejection, I'm sure you'll end up somewhere just as good.
-
I just saw on the results page that Yale had 10,400 applicants?!? How is that possible? Bad economy and all, I'd be surprised if that many people applied worldwide for history PhD's this year, let alone to one Ivy, especially since about 900 or so history PhD's get awarded every year in the US. Am I crazy for thinking that?
-
Don't worry about it. Its easy to lose perspective, especially if realize that all of us are probably the "big fish in a little pond" in our respective undergraduate departments and are used to having our egos (I know mine is anyway) pumped up by the respective advisers and letter writers we work with. I'm sure you'll get in somewhere great, if the people around you thought you could get in to those schools, then you probably can, you just need to get into the respective pegs that committees are trying to fit.
-
I don't know if its good to think this way, especially on the idea of safety schools- I don't think any exist per se. Besides, Wisconsin is a very good, selective program, no shame in not getting in, its right up there with everywhere else you applied.
-
I got into Wisconsin too. Funding offers comes between something like March 15th and March 24th, most likely by mail.
-
Its funny you mention that. I had to work up the courage to email my potential advisor and never received anything back. Frankly, I was borderline shocked that I got after that. I think I actually gave out a yelp when I opened the letter that terrified my poor dog.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have a good idea for responding to an offer, like a thank-you note?
