  1. Rejected from Michigan's Gender Studies/History Dual PhD, but I'm waitlisted for the History department. Until I hear something from the waitlist, I'm assuming I'm moving to LA next year. Good luck to everyone else!
  2. Waitlisted at Michigan (History). I'm just going with the assumption that I'm moving to LA for now
  3. Yeah, I really hope they send out the packages soon. I'm really looking forward to the visit in two weeks. I've never been to California before Just waiting on Michigan now. We'll see.
  4. Also got my Princeton reject today. Hurt me just because they had me in for an interview, so I was already in love with the place. Oh well. USC is sounding better and better everyday. And at least I only have more program to hear from, then I'm done!
  5. The ivies with separate MA programs tend to do that, and even after sticking you in the running for the MA, may still reject you. I had to laugh two years ago when Columbia did this to me. (Mainly because I already had a funded MA offer. Yeah, totally paying $60,000 to live in NYC and go to your program Columbia. Sure.) Rejected from Princeton post-interview weekend. Bleh. Just waiting out on Michigan now, though LA is looking nicer and nicer everyday.
  6. Oh man, congrats! Of course now I'm going to check my email even more frequently for news.
  7. Oh man, I feel you hiroshiman. Princeton told me they'd let me know two weeks after my interview, so I'm sitting here desperately refreshing in hopes they'll tell me sooner rather than later. If they don't let me in now I'll be devastated. D:
  8. There's a Michigan admit up. Anyone want to claim it? (And share if you have any info?)
  9. I'm excited about moving back to the States! I've been an international student for three years now (one year in Japan, and the last two years in Canada,) and I'm ready to be done with it for a little while. Also just excited to live somewhere warmer than my current location. So tired of winter weather.
  10. Fees range anywhere from $50-$120 per school, plus remember that you have to pay $25 per school to send your GRE scores. (I believe it's three free when you initially take the exam? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) Depending on your undergrad/grad program, you may also have to pay to send transcripts. Most applications only need a scanned copy, but some want hard copies as well prior to admission. A good estimate is $100 per program for everything combined (so in your case, $1200.) I spent about $400 this year for five programs (some had my GRE scores from previous years, so that cut down the cost), and two years ago I spent $750 on seven programs. As imri1986 suggested, look into fee waivers as an option.
  11. So which major rejection bloodbaths do we have left? I forsee many more tears on the results board in the next couple weeks.
  12. Congrats fuujintoraijin! Any idea what you'll choose? And are you going to the open house weekend at USC? If so I'll see you there!
  13. You could always ask your POI directly. Even if it's not published anywhere, professors in the department should know placement information for the last few years.
  14. Not sure; they're holding a visit weekend March 9-11 and are starting to make travel arrangements. Still haven't received an official letter or funding details yet though, so I'm not sure what they're doing. I hope there is still some good news for you!
  15. Their loss hiroshiman. I'm sure you'll kick ass at NW!
  16. Glad there's so much good news coming out today! Sitting back since I won't hear anything else till at least next week. Going to try to focus on pounding out my thesis instead.
  17. 25 for my PhD this fall. I was 23 when I started my MA, and ended up in the lower end age-wise with my cohort. (Students from 21 all the way to their 60s!)
  18. Yeah, that's fairly common. When I applied two years ago, both Yale and Columbia bumped me from PhD consideration down to MA. I didn't end up getting into Yale, but I did get into Columbia. It's a chance, but not a guarantee. Don't lose hope yet! It's true! When I was at Princeton last week for interviews, all the other interviewees were finishing their MAs as well. Of the current grad students I met, only one came straight from undergrad; everyone else had an MA. I think it's especially common in EAS because of our need for language skills. I know I wasn't ready for a PhD two years ago, but after going through my MA program, I certainly am! (I'm also one of the lucky ones who found a funded MA. They do exist!)
  19. I think it's more so that people are hanging around in their respective sub-field threads. (History in my case.)
  20. Hang in there! I just got back from my Princeton interview trip, and it was six 20-minute interviews. It's shocking how quickly they'll go by. Just relax, and remember that they're not only interviewing you, but you're also there to interview them and find out more about the program. Good luck!
  21. There are more of us on this board then you would expect. Sadly very few people post on the EASIA topic, hence why I tend to hang out here instead.
  22. A month for one, five weeks for another. Really helpful in my case since I have a lot of flights to figure out.
  23. czesc, I'm interviewing with the department of East Asian Studies, not History, so don't fret! I don't think the History department holds interviews, but New England Nat would know better than me.
  24. Me too. I assume Berkeley had a few hundred applicants, but it would be nice to admit numbers or percentages. Looks like I won't hear from Michigan for a couple weeks yet at the earliest, so just going to concentrate on my Princeton interview this week. (Meeting with six professors! Ahh!)
  25. Seems pretty common. At this point they are trying to woo you, not the other way around. I've been accepted to one school that stated in their letter that they'll take care of travel expenses for me to visit in March (no limit listed, which is pretty good since I"ll be flying in from Canada.) Same with the school I'll be interviewing at next week.
