SLPgradstudent got a reaction from Rorororosy in 2016 Applicants
It's crazy how every year, grad school entrance is so insanely competitive and schools know that, and yet, the next year, they're overwhelmed/unprepared by how many applications they receive. This year doesn't seem to be the exception, it seems to be the trend. I think we should all commit, once we're all SLPs, to working to solve this problem we have of such a tiny bottleneck, for such an important field. The need exists, the jobs exist, the grad school spots do not. If we don't change things, who will, right? (Or is this just my lack of sleep talking?)

I second that. 3700 was easy, so as long as the chem class isn't insanely difficult for you, you should be fine!

Yeah @kgehlha it hurts a bit but at the same time they worked hard to be there and its hopeful because it means that the waitlist will be bumped up! I am like, YES REJECT that school so I can get in!!!
It will be okay! Have you heard back at all from any schools?

Just received my second acceptance to Jacksonville University today! I honestly didn't think I would get accepted anywhere my first time around, so I'm really really stoked to have choices!

Thanks @esopha. Yeah, I'm finishing my second bachelor's this semester. I don't think I can take a class over the summer because I'm getting married in June, and then we'll be on honeymoon for two weeks. Hopefully it won't be an issue!

@intotheairwaves (or anyone else who's curious)
It's statistics I guess. If two schools tie for a rank, then they get the average of the scores they tied for. Let's say you have five schools, ranked between 1st and 5th place. Schools A, B, C, D, and E. A is 1st, B, C, and D tied for third. And E is fifth. Except, you average the numbers, to make it make sense, because really they tied for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. Otherwise you get a big jump from 2nd to 5th. So B, C, and D split the difference, and get ranked 3rd. Does that make any sense?
(Sorry, my inner nerd is showing! Can you tell I've spent a lot of time looking at the ASHA rankings?)

Hi Cowsy! I can understand the feeling of bitterness (I felt the same when I got waitlisted at NMSU) - but being on their "first-tier" waitlist means they definitely want you! There just isn't enough space. I know it sucks hardcore, but you have a good chance of getting off that list and getting into the program - don't throw it away!
Anecdote time... I applied for a job as an RA in college and didn't get it... then a few weeks later I got a phone call saying they wanted to offer me a job because someone else turned it down! I accepted the job and it changed my entire college experience - I was a great RA, won some departmental awards, etc. It was a better of 1) sticking it to whoever decided I wasn't "first string" material and 2) a way of honoring and proving right the woman who had the faith in me to offer me the spot.
If they offer you the spot (first round, second round, or third!) it means you deserve it. These clinical professors are thinking of the lives of all of your future clients, there is no way they'd even put you on a waitlist if they thought you wouldn't make a good/competent clinician.
Is this school your top choice? Maybe you could call and tell them that if you were offered a spot, you'd definitely accept (if that's the case!) It might get you bumped up the waiting list. Just call and talk with faculty in general could help out your spot.

Got my first acceptance today from Portland State University!!! Absolutely shocked considering how average my GPA is and how horrible my GRE scores were lol. I'm guessing my experiences and LOR's got me in. Definitely gonna go out and celebrate this one with a few drinks...or maybe like 10 hahaha.

I called UW Seattle this week (because patience is clearly not my virtue) and found out that the MedSLP admits might find out about the only possible funding we qualify for - tomorrow. (recruitment scholarships)
After that, I seriously think I will be taking a break from grad cafe for a while, because I am finding it way too intense. I had a nightmare that I accidentally hit the "decline acceptance" button for all my schools last night. ?

I don't think that they can rescind an offer. Not unless you totally screw up (like fail all of your classes this semester). If they accept you under conditional terms, then you have to meet certain requirements before enrollment and they can refuse admission if you don't follow through. But otherwise, I don't think they would.
But I'm kind of afraid to make a B this semester and then have one of my programs be like "your GPA isn't the same! NO." Especially because I'm out of field and the B would be in my com dis pre req courses.

Hi friends! How's it going? I've decided to change my name for graduate school. (And by that, I mean, I'm going by my middle name, which is Elizabeth, though I also will accept Eliza as a shortening of this.) I'm not sure what steps I need to take for this, but I started telling the starbucks barista to call me that, so that's going well.

Nah - even interviews won't do it. Studies have shown that job interviews do not provide a good indication of how well an applicant does in a position. Interviews provide very superficial information about people - think about how well an introvert might do in a typical interview setting vs an extrovert. I think the universities do the best they can (for the most part) with the resources they have. I wouldn't be upset at someone who gets into a program over me based on stats alone, because there are so many other factors at play. I read an SOP that literally blew my mind for an applicant that had lower-end stats. This person also had amazing rapport and in-depth experience working with the faculty writing the letters of rec.

The Boulder visit was great! Got back late last night.
I've never seen scenery quite as beautiful as Boulder ... those mountains are so picturesque, they look fake! Almost like someone hung up a giant backdrop photo.
I did get sick from the altitude though.
We were chatting with department faculty after breakfast, but I had to sit down. So I sat down in an inconspicuous place and tried to catch my breath and feel better.
Then, a professor walked by, chuckled lightly, and asked "All talked out?" I told her I just wasn't feeling right ... something was off, and I think it was the altitude.
"Want a quiet place to sit?" she asked. She then walked me to her office, and immediately directed me to the "comfy chair," her own office chair behind her desk. She then offered me tea (she had a variety of flavors) with raw honey from her student's beekeeping farm.
She told me to sit as long as I needed, and that she'd be at meetings back-to-back for a while, and simply instructed me to lock her door after I left.
It was one of the nicest interactions I've experienced on a visit yet! It was good to know profs truly care!
