    Offer: decline

I just declined an offer to Loyola (Chicago). Hope someone else can get it.
  2. graduates in a few weeks. married a few after that. moves a few later. then starts a phd. holy shit.

  3. You'll want to look at Princeton Seminary. Lots of Barthians and lots of modern theology.
  4. Congrats eskidd! That is very impressive! Who are you hoping to work with? Enjoy Milwaukee. It's a pretty cool city.
  5. Seriously, you gotta stop saying that. It hurts your argument every time.
  6. Yep - that's all I've heard so far. Hope everything works out well for you!
  7. Hey Mike, that's great to hear. If I was in your position I'd be waiting on Duke too. Do you know anyone else who was offered/accepted at Baylor? I know of one in NT, but that's it.
  8. I have accepted Baylor's offer for theology/ethics. Looking forward to having a beer with Ken Starr. I still have to say 'no' to Marquette and Loyola (for those on the waitlist) and I will be withdrawing my application from Dayton. Best of luck to everyone!
  9. Just heard from Marquette. No funding available at this time. Oh well, looks like Baylor it is!
  10. Patience IS a virtue. But these are real people who probably want to help you. Send them an email - well written, of course - and just let them know that you want to be able to have as much time as you can to make the right decision with all of the available information. You're in, so now they are on your team. I just did this with Marquette and the director of admissions and I have had a few email exchanges now. Got all of the information I needed without any trouble at all. She is a real person! Congrats on the acceptance.
  11. Ha...i hear ya. That is so odd about Marquette. I talked with Steve Long in September and he told me that they are able to fund about half of their students. But based on what I've seen on here that doesn't seem to be the case. Or maybe I'm just hanging out with the wrong people. But do you know anyone who has actually gotten funding? Was it substantial? I am probably going to have to make a decision between Baylor and Marquette. Baylor came through with a very good offer, I just hope Marquette puts up a fight. I would love to study with Steve Long or Therese Lysaught. Too bad...
  12. Has anyone actually been accepted to Marquette AND received funding? If so, how was the package? I have been accepted, but I only know that because the director of admissions told me over email. She couldn't tell me anything else. I am still awaiting my actual letter of acceptance to tell me whether or not I've gotten funding. Based on what I've seen in the results page, I'm guessing I shouldn't get my hopes up. So, who's going to Marquette?
  13. Glad someone picked up on that!
  14. "Best" is not a theological category. For what its worth, I just finished a degree at Regent College in British Columbia and I would highly recommend it. Not fundamentalist at all. Evangelical, yes. I am on the fringes of Evangelicalism, and I find the theological conversations here to be uniquely stimulating and free from the dominant American liberal/conservative ideologies. This is coupled with a serious desire to do theology for the Church, which is what it should be. But I am biased. If I didn't come here I would have gone to Duke. Most importantly, if you are going to move somewhere for a few years it might as well be the most beautiful city in the world: Vancouver, BC. If you are interested in pursuing doctoral work or concerned with intellectual seriousness, there are Regent alums at Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews, Endinburgh, and Aberdeen in the UK, and Baylor, Duke, Princeton, Yale, UCLA, Notre Dame, Fordham and Wheaton in the States. And that is across disciplines - from theology to biology to English lit. But that might be more of a reflection on the students that come here than the school itself.
  15. Well, let me give my 2 cents. It looks like you're a United Methodist, judging by your choices of schools. I imagine that the United Methodists (having previously been one myself) like their own kind. I know they pay for their students to get MDivs, as many denominations will do, and I wonder if they are as kind to PhD students. Perhaps find a local UM church and talk to a pastor about funding? Or, contact the school or bishop to find out what other students have done. If you're not a UM, then I guess that's a different story... But that does seem low, to me. And why on earth would a TA o RA position negate any other financial offers and cap you at 100%? That seems odd...

    Waco, TX

I did my undergrad at Baylor and I have also applied there for doctoral work. I have lived in Houston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Vancouver and, to be fair, Waco isn't any of those places. But it is not nearly as bad as everyone thinks. Small? It has over 120,000 people which means it has a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, bars, etc. Everything you might need, and even some stuff you want. Even since I graduated ('02) there have been dozens of new restaurants and bars that have been built around the city. Waco has about 15,000 students, so it is not the only thing going on. You'll find quite a bit of money and nice houses near the lake, along with some nice landscapes. Cameron park is a great park near the Brazos river where you'll find unbeatable mountain biking/hiking trails, as well as nice open spaces to play. The best thing about Waco? The cost of living. Baylor provides generous stipends and many of their graduate students can afford to buy houses. This is not true in most places. Granted, it is not a major metropolis, but it will do. An hour either direction gets you to Dallas or Austin if you want to get away. But 6 years of grad school in a place like Waco means you actually have a chance of saving some money for your next move. And, for the record, the Branch Davidian compound was well outside the city limits. Let me know if you have any questions!
  17. I've seen a few Boston College acceptances on the results page...anyone care to share?? Congrats!
  18. Hey there, I'm interested in virtue ethics, economic and political theory, technology, and language. Have applied to Marquette as well - do you know when we might hear something from them?
  19. Hello - ethics applicant here. I haven't heard from Emory, ND, or BC. Nothing from Duke (ThD) either. I heard ND was making offers last week, so I'm pretty sure I didn't get in there. I interviewed at Baylor last weekend and was the only student there out of 20 who had applied to ethics.
  20. CONGRATS! Very good news, indeed!
  21. Ah! This is good news! Thanks for letting me know.
  22. Thanks everyone. So it seems that I didn't get interviews at Vandy or Emory, and Notre Dame failed to call me yesterday. My "waiting to hear from" list is being picked off slowly by the sniper named silence... But it just takes one. I'd be very happy to go to Baylor, so now I just gotta make sure I don't screw up this interview. Best of luck at Vandy!
  23. I applied for theology/ethics at the following schools: Baylor - invited for interview Have not heard from: Duke (ThD) Emory Vandy BC Dayton Marquette Anyone heard from these schools? Anyone else have an interview at Baylor?
