Info session dinner tomorrow night; Advice?!?!
thepinkdragon76 replied to thepinkdragon76's topic in Social Workers Forum
Oh, they actually created TWO. I guess one didn't work so they made the other one. Lol -
My nightmares always have me having to go back to high school as an older adult because I missed some crucial class and didnt actually graduate, even though I already have a BA. Our minds really do a number on us when stressed!

That dream wasn't a dream for me in 2007. Of course I had been trying to get pregnant and when my husband was set to deploy and we thought we missed out chance; I started the MSW application process back then. Of course, just when everything was getting under way, I discovered two weeks later that I was indeed, pregnant. Now my son turns 7 next month and I'm waiting for my dream last night to come true, that I get accepted into the only program I applied to.

OK to mention dyslexia or ADHD?
thepinkdragon76 replied to BunnyMeadows's topic in Social Workers Forum
I know that for the program I applied to it gave the mission statement of the school and then asked based upon it to explain why we chose their program and what life experiences we felt would help us to be successful in promoting those goals and as well as our overall career goals. Although I did not mention my ADHD, I did mention my PTSD because it is directly relevant to the question posed about helping diverse communities overcome personal challenges by implementing positive self reflection. It also is relevant to my overall career goal of helping other veteran's and their families learn about PTSD, TBI and MST and how veterans and families can get access to treatment and gain coping skills so that they may return to society in a functional way. -
Info session dinner tomorrow night; Advice?!?!

Help me, I'm bleeding. Oh my poor heart. Omg lol. I wasn't really freaking out per se, just being half silly so I truly don't make a fool out of myself and thought others interested in social work would see the humor in the anxiety session provided. Yes, I'm fully aware they will be discussing other programs, but I do know that the faculty for the program I applied for will be there. Trust me, there was nothing mentioned in my application, resume or narrative statement about the scholarship. My other work stands for itself. I am attending because I want to. I want to see the campus and meet with people. I am an extrovert by nature and love to meet new people. I am nervous and there is the possibility of an informal questioning, so I am unsure what NOT to say. Thanks for the tough love actually, it made me laugh and reminded me of an LCSW I've worked with. Believe it or not, you did give me some good advice coupled with lots of snark. Although, I'm sorry you felt the post was so incredulous that you let your own emotion get the best of you to purposefully seek out a new identity to attempt to massacre my intelligence. -

So, although KU doesn't invite students to this, you have to RSVP to attend. Since notifications for regular MSW applicants don't go out until next week and this event is listed on the program's calendar of events I'm thinking this is an inadvertent way of seeing who is serious about the program. Dinner, meet and greet with faculty and prospective students..... Uh..help?!?! I don't want to screw this up! Anyone ever attend anything like this for a school? What should I wear? What should I not say? Do I study the bio's of every professor? Lol I made sure to refresh my memory about the two I expressed interest to work with. Should I tell anyone if asked about scholarships that I worked with the Graduate Military Studies departments to change the requirements for their Wounded Warrior Scholarship over the last year so pre 9/11 disabled veterans like myself could apply? Since KU is a very heavily veteran populated school, this is an achievement, but I don't want to sound snobby. There is no guarantee I will get into the program or get the scholarship; help help!! *insert foot in mouth*

My husband is in the Army and we were flabbergasted when suddenly he was notified that he was selected to attend the Naval PostGraduate School this summer. We had no idea. We originally thought it might happen over a year out from now but thankfully we had already discussed what we would do in the event this happened. I'm still waiting to hear back from the only school I applied to, but even if I do not get accepted our son and I are staying here. We are moving off post and buying a house in town here so we can use his housing allowance to support two households. Since the cost of living is higher in Monterey, CA it will cover our mortgage here and a shared rental or similar for him there. I was not ready for an 18 month separation, but since I am prior service and we have endured deployment separations I am certain we will make this work. Plus, if I get into my program it will be nice to get our degrees at the same time and not interfere with each other's study. Good luck to us all!

Even though I know typically regular MSW candidates don't get notification until March and April, I still check my email and the portal several times a day. The past two days it's been worse because we are buying a house, I'm applying for a scholarship and am waiting for a response about a technical issue for the application and well, I just can't stop hitting refresh. On the bright side, we got the house and close on March 20th. I hope I get a decision before then!

Hi. I'm new to the forums but have been lurking checking out things. My situation is a bit unique in that I applied to one school for one program due to my location and status. My husband is active duty and we are stationed in Kansas. I am a veteran and have a good care team at my local VA and our life is established here. So, I applied to KU for their MSW program starting in the fall. Of course, my husband got selected last week by the Army to attend grad school in CA for his job, so our plan C has been enacted and we are buying a house here and doing the geographical separation for 18 months. So now to the question at hand. Notifications have NOT been sent out yet. The School of Social Welfare has the "Info session" on their calendar of events for this Thursday. It is a dinner, meet and greet and information session on some of the various programs offered at both campuses. In order to attend you have to RSVP, which I have done. I know that the director of the program for the campus I chose will be there, along with other faculty and staff. I also know that regular MSW notifications will start going out in March. Do you see where I'm going with this? I feel this "info session" is a tactic to seek out serious candidates. I've heard stories of people attending things like these at other school and got their decision soon after. So, any advice? I really need this and don't want to screw up!! Lol
