  1. What the above two said. The application process for PhD work is a tightrope between "I know what I'm talking about and am ready to pursue scholarly work" and also "I have a lot of room to grow and learn." You shouldn't enter a program knowing exactly what it is you're planning to work on (general strokes and questions for sure), at least not in the American system.
  2. Also, I'm not sure about other subfields (or which you're applying to), but the theology subfield has taken students off of the waitlist the past couple of years. Obviously that's going to be different every year and, like everything else in the PhD application process, is dependent on a number of variables. But they do actually take people off the waitlist.
  3. For whatever it's worth, interview weekend was last weekend. They brought 4 per subfield and will take 2 and we were told we would be notified of acceptances/waitlists/rejections in the next 7-10 days. If someone is given an offer they have until April 15 to accept it or turn it down, at which point they'll start extending interviews and acceptances to those on the waitlist. Hope this helps.
  4. Hard to say. I guess I'll know how it went in 7-10 days.
  5. Oddly enough, in my van from the airport to Baylor we had a conversation about the Silmarillion.
  6. Looks like systematic theology at Boston College accepted someone today. So there's another no for me.
  7. Barry Harvey is who I've talked to quite a bit, both through email and we met up for awhile at AAR in November. I'm also interested in working with Carnes and Tran there as well.
  8. Still, that many interviews is great. Out of 7 applications I have 1 interview.
  9. Seems like they all go out at once then since there's people from JCA getting acceptances too. Oh well. Congrats!
  10. What subfield did you apply for? I'm trying to figure out if they send all their offers at once or if it's different for every subfield.
  11. The struggle is real today to not email Vanderbilt and find out if I'm still being considered.
  12. Where all did you apply?
  13. Looking forward to meeting you in person this weekend. Getting pretty nervous waiting on other phone calls/emails and anticipating this interview this weekend.
  14. I don't know know anything about it. It looks like a small program based on the website (only like 5 or 6 professors). Anthea Butler teaches there and she's a boss.
  15. Do you know if this is true for systematics as well?
  16. Anyone heard anything from Vandy? It feels really late for them to be still calling folks about interviews.
  17. I met with Ross Wagner last year when I was applying for the ThD (opted not to this year). Such a nice guy. This has nothing to do with anything, I was just so impressed by his humility and helpful nature.
  18. I've been told by many Duke profs that it doesn't hurt your chances at all. I was told in an on campus visit 2 years ago that it's $12,000 a year. That could have changed.
  19. Nothing yet for theology. I'm assuming that means no invite for me. I doubt they'd wait this long to contact. It feels like there's less folks in religion on gradcafe this year, both the forum and the results.
  20. Congrats! It's easy for me to be happy for you because you're in a different discipline than what I'm trying to get. Hoping I get an email from theology today. I applied to UVa last year and this year. Last year it was mid-March before anyone heard anything, either acceptance or rejection, and they all came at once. It was the very last program I heard from.
  21. Same, but with Vanderbilt.
  22. Oh man. Vandy is my top choice. I really hope I get a call/email.
  23. I got about 5 different hits from ATL, which means I did okay at Emory I assume. But not good enough for an interview. Good luck! No hits from Durham on mine yet so I guess that means no Duke for me either.

    Plan B?

I've always planned on being ordained to the priesthood (I'm an Anglican) and doing ministry as something like an associate pastor if I was to get the PhD. So if the PhD doesn't pan out I'll start the ordination process and be a full time priest instead of an associate. It's less of a plan b for me and more of a one thing instead of both.
  25. I feel like it's been too long to have heard from Emory about getting an interview so I think I'm going to stop hoping for that.
