  1. Last year there were around 116 applicants, 13 attended, 4 got funding. . .That is all I know. As for the program, it has been a great opportunity to work with great professors and take some really interesting classes. You take four classes each semester, and they are very open about what you take. Four classes is bit intense, but it is good in a one-year program. The only difficult part for me, anyway, was not having a real advisor. The DGS of EAS serves as your advisor (this year Deborah Davis, I don't know about next year). . . but other than that I would highly recommend it. If you are looking to continue into a PHD program, it is a mixed bag. On one hand it is definitely a plus to have an MA from Yale, on the other, it is difficult to get recs from profs so early. But they are super friendly and willing to help you out as much as they can. If you have not received a rejection you are most likely accepted. Last year they sent out their mass rejections, and then took their sweet time sending acceptances. If you have any more questions, let me know!
  2. The Illinios was me. My POI called me. Apparently they have submitted their recs, but I didn't get the sense that they were done notifying at all . . .it was just a phone call to tell me my status and to talk about the univ. fellowship.
  3. It depends. Most years I think only the top few receive funding, but I think other years they have a little more money to go around. This year I think they gave full funding to the top 4 out of 15 or so students.
  4. Yale's MA provides tuition + stipend to the top few students each year.
  5. I'm in the process of completing a 1 year ma at Yale in EAS and hoping to make it into their EALL phd program. Also applying to Harvard, Columbia, UIUC, Chicago and Oregon. Fellowships: FLAS Undergrad: Ind. Major in Chinese lang, lit and area studies. Spent a semester in China and a summer at Middlebury Chinese school.
  6. I'm currently doing a 1 year MA in eas at yale if you have any questions.
  7. Hello all! So, I got five offers, all accompanied by kind, personal emails from the POIs I mentioned in my statement of purpose. I have decided to go to my dream school (Yale), but do not know what to do with the other four. I know how to officially decline the offer, but do I need to write the POIs back? What do I say? I don't want to burn any bridges (I think all of them are amazing!). Advice?
  8. Yes! This whole process is finally over for me! I just got my letter from Chicago EALC telling me that I was accepted into some MA in Humanities program, and I got my official rejection from harvard and official acceptance to Yale! I have finally heard back from all 11 schools I applied to and ended up with 5 acceptances (though some are strange) and 6 rejections. Not bad for a first timer! I'm just so happy to be done with all of this and wish everyone still waiting the best of luck!
  9. I have been in contact with two Yale students who got into the EALL phd program with no problem after the MA. They said it was extremely helpful because they got to know all of the professors. In fact one student (and myself as well) originally applied to the phd program in EALL but were referred to the MA with an implicit acceptance afterward if we did well and got what we needed. (Hoping this works out for me!!!!) So I think it is good. . .just very little funding. . .keeping my fingers crossed with everyone else for a FLAS fellowship! Anyone know just how competitive they are for Chinese? I would think less so than some other languages but not exactly easy to obtain. How do you find out if you got it? Best of luck to all! This forum has been amazing during this whole process!
  10. I'm in at Yale too and definitely going, so I guess that we will be classmates! I'm Chinese and really interested in Late Ming literature and culture. You're right! So many fascinating classes to choose from, I keep checking to see if they have posted next semester's classes, but so far nothing. I'm so excited!!! What profs are you thinking of working with? Did you get any funding? I don't think I did but I"m really hoping for the FLAS fellowship or a miracle! I'm so excited though!!! Sorry for the messy excitement, but I'm so thrilled!
  11. I was told by my POI I was admitted without funding but I haven't gotten the email from the department yet. The students I talked to that went said they had to take out loans to cover most of it but that it was totally worth it. Apparently very few people get any funding. I applied for a FLAS fellowship that would cover about half, but I don't know if I will get it, and the deadline is past. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will get some funding but I think I am going either way. Might we be classmates? What are you hoping to go for?
  12. I wrote my POI in the EALL dept (who had previously referred my app to the MA program) and she checked for me. Apparently there were 106 applicants and 4 received funding, she didn't say how many were accepted. Best of luck! Hope we are classmates!
  13. I think it is odd. I don't have much experience in this area but I feel like most schools would just wait till Monday. Strange
  14. Hey, I don't know anything about Stanford, but what other MA programs did you apply to?
  15. Yeah, I'm really really ready to hear from Yale MA as well! Based on the last few years it looks like late feb to mid march, but I'm really hoping we find out much sooner! Yale is my first choice by far!
  16. Are we discussing Berkeley's Asian Studies MA or East Asian Languages and Cultures MA/PhD? Have both been decided?
  17. I tried to check my application status on the Columbia site and it wouldn't work. . . anyone else having this problem? Is it just having technical issues or could they be updating it with decision info? I know I'm obsessing but I want to know! What are your thoughts?
  18. I'm applying to Princeton's east asian studies program. There is a professor there that has the exact same research interest in literature as I do, but he normally teaches language (though he has published several works about my field. I have my fingers crossed to get accepted there and be able to work with him (and/or a few other profs there with similar research interests) but I think my chances are also pretty slim. Good Luck!
  19. Here goes . . . 3.723 overall undergrad gpa and above 3.85 in major (haven't recalculated it yet)Received award from Modern Languages and Literatures dept.Presented a paper at a conference and won best paper, currently preparing another paper to presentWorking on an honors thesis that makes a relatively original argument.Created my own major and found a way to learn Chinese with very few courses offered at my school (independent studies, went abroad, attended Middlebury summer school, hired a tutor, etc)I have 2.5 years teaching experienceAt least one awesome recc and 2 really good onesGRE 680v/700q/5awDeans List every semesterVery high language proficiency (Advanced High on ACTFL scale)Served as TA to my professor last semester and created worksheets and communication activities this is really an awkward feeling, but it does boost my self-confidence a little!
  20. I just found out that a certain grad school that I applied to somehow had not received one of my transcripts (from my semester abroad), so I emailed the secretary. No response. I emailed her again with a scanned copy of the transcript (until I can get her an official one). She wrote me back and said thanks and that she would add it to my file. My application status was updated today and it still says it has not been received. I'm so confused. Any advice? Is this going to affect my chances of admission? I think the problem might be that the program's transcripts were published via an American University and they are looking for a transcript that says it is from the Chinese one. They will figure it out, right? I'm trying not to panic.
  21. Yes! it was Yale! The DGS of the EALL program called me to tell me that they liked me but wanted to refer me to the MA program to get a few more courses under my belt. She has also sent me several personal emails and put me in touch with two students, so I would think they only do that if they are really really confident that you will get in the MA program. It's so nice to talk to someone who is in the same boat! Hopefully we will both get in, as Yale is by far my top choice! (my dream school). The other was Harvard, who sent me a letter saying that they couldn't accept me into the PhD program but that the adcomm thought I should be considered for the RSEA MA . . . didn't sound as enthusiastic Michigan was near the bottom of my list of preferences, but it still is no fun to get rejections. . .Good luck to you too!
  22. Got an email from Michigan ALC with a rejection letter attached. . .not quite the way I wanted to start the process. It stings more than I thought it would. sigh.
