Tired of people asking if I got in...in December
adstatus replied to sputnik's topic in Waiting it Out
I've been more or less quiet about the whole thing. I've told people I've applied and when they ask "Where?" I tell them. If they ask about a "top pick" I just tell them that if I get in at any that I applied to I'll be happy. -

LOL. Mine too. There were two this week I had to remind him about and in each email he responded to he asked if I'd heard from anyone yet. I just replied, "I wish." I'm just going to try to keep myself busy for now and to try to NOT obsess, which is in my nature to do. -
Thanks for the encouragement. I was really just being over dramatic. I only applied to one program and put nowhere near the effort into the application process as many on this forum have. Heck, my GRE scores were from 5 years ago (and not that good, either!). I have since (yesterday) regrouped and applied to the Professional MBA program at the same university. This way, I can take until August to prep for the GMAT (and score well), and get some of the core business courses under my belt before I reapply to several programs. Let's call this time a "trial run". Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

How do you get into a "TOP 50" business PhD program?
adstatus replied to adstatus's topic in Applications
Thanks. I received my masters in 2005, so not too long ago. I've gone ahead and applied to the Professional MBA program at the university I currently teach at. Reflective of your comment, I'll have some current graduate level coursework in my field and will be able to establish better relationships with profs in the business college. I think the real problem is that my undergrad and graduate degrees are in journalism - not business. My goal is to get a publication and a conference presentation or two to add to my vita before trying again too. What is the current GMAT average for the top schools? Last time I looked it was around 705. That's what I'll be shootin' for. Thanks for your comments! -
Compost indeed. Received word today -- rejected. Now, I not only feel like 5hit, I AM 5hit. Thanks.

Ok. So I found out today that I'm officially "rejected" for next year. No problem - but now I am focused on what it is going to take to make it into one of the top programs? I'd love some input from those that made it into MIT, Wharton, Yale, Harvard, Ohio State, Northwestern, etc. What should I shoot for on my GMAT? Will 700 do, or will I need more? How about professional experience, does it even matter (I have 20 years in industry as a Marketing Manager). How about my undergrad GPA and graduate GPA? My undergrad is a weak 3.2 and my MS is a 3.9. My education is in Advertising/Mass Communications not business - is that a negative? I am planning to enroll in a number of graduate level business courses over the next few semesters to get up to speed. What about publications? I have one conference presentation from my masters program. It was awarded top student paper in the advertising division at the largest Mass Comm conference. Do I need much, much, more to get in? How much more? I know, lots of questions. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've heard that many programs will not say anything to their waitlist folks until after the April 15th deadline. After they know for sure who accepts or declines offers, they can open up for waitlisted folks or reject them. That may be the situation I'm in too. I've not heard anything, one way or the other. They may be waiting to see who accepts. If someone gets a better offer somewhere else then we might be in luck. I guess the good news is, this can't go on indefinitely. We'll hear something within the next couple of weeks -- one way or the other. Hang in there.

My sentiments exactly. Makes me wonder what the he11 I'm getting myself into. Fortunately, the prof in question has more of a sales management research focus and I'm looking more towards consumer behavior and database marketing - so I won't have to work with her much (I hope). Unfortunately for me, I really don't have another option. Wife, kids in private school, mortgage, current visiting assistant prof position at the university I applied to and a consulting business. Moving away to be a full-time student just wouldn't make sense. Gotta wait till I can get that tenure track position before its financially feasible to pick up and move. At any rate, I should "officially" know something in the next week or two -- for better or worse! It's in His hands.

Thanks for the feedback. The contact I have IS the chair of the PhD committee, so if anyone would know, she's the one. If I don't hear anything next week, I'll pick up the phone.... it just ticks me off when people don't bother to respond. A simple "sometime next week/month etc." would do... Thanks.

It's very frustrating, I KNOW! The program I applied to had a March 1st deadline, but they still have not sent out notices. The grad college said that they will be notifying people during the first two weeks of April. PUSHIN' THE APRIL 15 DEADLINE MUCH?!! See my post "PhD Coordinator won't return my email!" Have you heard anything yet?
-
How frustrating is this? The contact person they give you for follow up etc. won't return your email or answer your questions! When I was in the process of applying to the program, she was very responsive and was eager to provide me with information. Now that I've applied, I've sent three emails since the first of the year (not like I'm "pestering" her or anything), and she has yet to respond to any of them!! Following is the text of my last email. Am I being unreasonable to expect a response???? ARRRGGGGGHHH!!!! Dr. XXX, I know the PhD committee is probably still finalizing its decision on the PhD applicants for Fall 2008. I just wanted to drop you a note to say that I am still very much interested in the program and hope to be among those accepted for next year. Would it be possible for you to share with me your timeline for sending out notices? Also, will those notices be sent via mail or electronically? Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards,
-
As much as I hate to admit it, you are right. I'm driving myself nuts waiting to hear from the ONLY program I applied to. The reality of the process is that things in academics move at a snails pace. You have to remember that the profs who are on the admission committee also have research obligations, courses to teach, conferences to prepare for and other committees they serve on. They might meet only once or twice in a month to discuss the pool of applicants to narrow down the field. They are slow, but they are thorough. Hang in there (said the pot to the kettle!). You'll find out soon enough....

It sounds like you're in to me. I'd do my best in the ECON course, but I wouldn't sweat a 'B' or 'C'. Learn what you can and move forward. I thing you're good to go. Good luck.
-
I agree. It doesn't sound like a decision has been made one way or the other yet. That could be good news that they haven't cut you completely. I would say your odds at this point are "IN" or "WAIT LIST", with "OUT" still a possibility. Hang in there...

I thought I would start this thread for those of us who applied to programs with late deadlines. The deadline for my PhD program in marketing was March 1st. So, unlike most other business school applicants, I'm still waiting to hear something -- anything. I know there are others out there reading these posts and hearing about who was accepted here or rejected there and wait listed somewhere else, while we sit patiently on the sidelines for our programs to get their acts together! Anyway, maybe its just me, but I feel like a kid a week before Christmas and the suspense is KILLING me! Anyone else feel the same?

Here's one for discussion... I took the GRE more than 5 years ago when I applied for the MS program at the University I just a applied to a PhD program. I had intended to take the GMAT, but when I submitted my application, the PhD coordinator said "Don't worry about it. We should still have your GRE scores on record from before." I told her that I didn't do that well on it (honestly I didn't) because I took it cold with no preparation at all. I just walked in and took it one day. The way they were scored back then, there was a verbal, quantitative AND an analytical section. It seems these days there is just the Verbal and Quant. I don't remember what the scores were and couldn't find my record of them, but I know they were just good enough for me to be accepted into the Masters program. Now that I have not received a response yet, I'm really questioning if I should have taken the GMAT after 6 months of prep study. Was this a bone-head move to listen to the PhD coordinator and not take the GMAT? I emailed the PhD coordinator a couple of times to follow up on whether or not she found my old GRE scores and if I should take the GMAT. She never replied. Am I doomed?

I would say having a faculty member as an advocate can only help your situation. Your application my ultimately be turned down by the members of the committee, but if you have one prof who is willing to push for your application, that can certainly carry weight with other members of the voting faculty. If it comes down to one spot left and its between you and someone with similar qualifications, the faculty will vote with the prof who is pushing for you. Good luck! Its not always what you know, but who you know.

As I have not yet heard from my program either, I'm holding out for GOOD news. The application deadline for my program was March 1st and I've been told that it will take the better part of the month to make their decisions. However, I've also been told that the received "a lot of really good applicants this year." Hopefully I'm in the "good" pile. Good luck!

Great forum topic! I am married and have two kids, 8 and 4. My wife is a full-time stay-at-home mom. I worked full-time + while completing my masters (also as a full-time student). I've applied for a doctoral program but haven't heard anything yet. We too are very concerned about how we'll make ends meet. I currently hold a Visiting Assistant Professor position with the school I've applied to (in a different department). I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep it if I get accepted, though. If not, I think we are going to have to borrow money out the wazoo to get through four years! If anyone has any bright ideas on how to make it work my wife and I would love to know. Having been down this road for my Masters, my wife is VERY apprehensive about me starting school again. Is there a support group for spouses of grad students?
-
The deadline for my doctoral program was March 1st. I've been told that it takes about a month for them to make their decision. Not sure if this holds for your program or not. I think every institution and program is different. I'm just sitting tight trying not to go nuts while I wait. Good luck.

Tough call. I'm in a similiar situation. I've not heard anthing and the PhD coordinator won't respond to any inquires. All I've heard is "you should hear something sometime soon". Plus, I've not received any invitation for an interview. Is that the kiss of death?
-
What if you never get asked for an interview? Does that mean you're totally out, or that the PhD committee has made a decision, positive or negative, based just on your application, letters of recommendation etc? I can't get anything out of my contacts I have at the university. I might mention that I'm currently on the faculty of the university I applied to, but in a different department. I had excellent letters of recommendation from my department head, from a very well respected and nationally recognized professor in my department and from a recently tenured member of the program I applied to. I also have a very solid record of success from the Masters program I completed at the same university three years ago. Am I just paranoid, should I chill or should I consider enrolling in truck driving school? Thanks for your input.

Glad to know I'm not the only one driving myself and everyone around me insane waiting for a reply. Any one else waiting to hear from the Oklahoma State Spears School of Business?
