  1. Are you taking cost of living into consideration here? Sure, Berkeley might be offering more, but doesn't it cost more to live in the bay area than it does in San Diego? Use this to check out the difference in cost of living: http://www.bestplaces.net/col/default.aspx
  2. Find an easy part-time job with a flexible schedule (cafe, restaurant, library?). I'd much rather do that than take out a loan for living expenses.

    History 2010

Congrats to the SUNY Binghamton admit. Have you heard anything about funding yet? I talked to the grad. secretary a few days ago, and she told me that the adcom was meeting today (Wednesday) to deal with funding, and that they plan on sending out letters (I'm not sure if its by postal or email) very soon. I'm pretty jealous. I'd love to go to Binghamton. The department has so many faculty members I'd like to work with. Hopefully I hear some good news soon.

Anyone hear back from Binghamton yet?
  6. My girlfriend is doing the same. Both of us hate Phoenix, and neither of us will have jobs here (impossible to find) in a few months, so there is nothing keeping either of us here.

    History 2010

I'm lucky (maybe?) that I don't even have to deal with funding issues, since so far I've been rejected by every school I've applied to. I only have two more programs to hear back from. I know for certain that one of them doesn't offer funding of any sort, besides a small scholarship that covers about half of the tuition cost for one semester. The other does funding, but I don't know if they do any for MA students. Plan B is impossible to execute, since I have been unable to find a new job in a different city for over two months now. The job I have right now, in a city I hate, is going to end in a few months (our plant is shutting down). These next two months are going to be a lot of fun for me. I'm going to be jobless for sure and maybe homeless. I don't know if I'm going to bother doing this again next year. If I do, I'm not going to waste my time applying to PhD programs. I know I'm not competitive enough for any of them. I'll find four or five MA programs I like, apply to those, and see what happens. I know for certain I am not doing this again a third year, so I hope something works out this year or the next if I decide to do that. In the meantime, I'm going to hope that I can find funding for my own life.
  8. I still don't understand what you're trying to say to me. You sound like a crazy person who somehow has access to a computer and the internet. You ramble on and on and your argument never seems to have a point, other than trying to paint me as some elitist anti-fun hipster. I thought I've already made it very clear, but here it is again: My original complaint was that the people whining are making themselves look like idiots. Nothing more. I wasn't defending the "honor" of any program. I don't care if someone hates any program. I think it is hilarious (laughing at, not with) when people think they are too good for a program only after they've been rejected. Go ahead and criticize any program you want, I don't care. That's it. That is the only thing I've been trying to say here. But please, continue. In each of your responses, I am a completely different monster (first I'm an elitist ivy-league grad, next I'm an anti-intellectual hipster).
  9. This is starting to become a really interesting thread. I like seeing you attempt to analyze me, and get it all wrong. I'll try to set you straight, again. Maybe you can have another go at me after this? 1) I have across the board rejections so far (wasn't interested in Yale at all, and didn't apply, by the way). I'm still waiting to hear back from two more programs (both masters programs, no possibility of a PhD program this year). 2) I did not go to an ivy for my undergrad. I went to a state school, did not have a perfect GPA (3.42) and had average GRE scores. I don't have a sense of entitlement at all, and I don't understand where you're getting that from. I don't object to people venting in the forums (I'd rather people vent in the forums than the results page, actually), and I certainly don't object to people celebrating their acceptances (if you didn't get it the first time, I have none). My original complaint was about people who have a sense of entitlement, thought they were guaranteed a spot at a top 10 program, and then upon finding out they were rejected from that program, start to act like they were too good for the program anyway. EDIT: Oh, and I've already read all of the articles you linked me to on the Chronicle, and I agree with them all, especially the Benton series. Again, my original complaint was about people with unreal expectations. I don't really understand what you're trying to say.

    History 2010

I got my rejection email from UW a few days ago, but I'm not an Americanist.
  11. I think I need to clear some things up: 1) I am not talking about the obvious fake results. The Ball State jokes were pretty funny, and there have been other clearly fake results that were funny. I am talking about the real results where people bitch and moan in the notes because they think they are a shoe-in for top 10 programs. If you find out you've been rejected from Yale or Berkeley, you shouldn't be surprised, and you definitely shouldn't throw a tantrum. 2) I don't have a "top school". There are certainly programs I'd like to go to more than others, but I went into this process knowing that there was a good chance I'd get rejected across the board. My "top school" becomes whatever one accepts me. I think that's where a lot of this anger from these people comes from. They think because they went to an ivy for their undergrad and got perfect GRE's and a perfect GPA, they are somehow entitled to admission to every and any program they applied to.
  12. 2 definite rejects, 1 un-official reject (program already notified its admits). I'm not too worried yet. I knew the above programs would be very competitive. I've yet to hear from a few more programs where I think I may have a good chance. If those come back as rejects, I have a great Plan B lined up.
  13. Haha, the "yea, you suck too" was one of the comments that inspired me to start this thread. Berkeley history reject, right?
  14. My favorite is the "Whatever, your program/school/department sucks anyway". I always wonder why these people bothered applying in the first place then. Do people really spend all of that time and money trying to get into programs they don't like?
  15. Is it really necessary to leave bitter and childish remarks on the results page when you find out you've been rejected? I seriously want to know why people do this. Are these people who believe they are such hot shots that they deserve admission to every top program? You're going to get rejects, so deal with it like an adult,
  16. Move to San Francisco and find a job (or find a job and move to San Francisco), and start paying off my UG student loans (only slightly above 10k). That's pretty much it at this point.
  17. Were you one of the first two to post your results on the results page, or have you not posted anything there? So far I've only heard of Americanists getting accepted - maybe they haven't moved onto other fields yet?
  18. I haven't heard anything yet either, but it seems like most of my programs will do most of the notifying about a week or two. Only one of my programs started sending out acceptances, but so far there are only a few on the results page. I'm starting to think I didn't get into that program, but I'm remaining nervously optimistic.

Same here, especially since some people at one of the programs I've applied to have already been getting accepted (UC Davis).

  21. Thanks. Good luck to you too.
  22. I saw in the results search that two of you were accepted today via e-mail. I've applied to UC Davis as well, but haven't heard anything back yet. What field are you two in? What does your status look like online (Y in any admit provision rows?). Davis is one of my top choices, and the anticipation is nearly killing me.
