  1. You should probably ask this of your current advisor and profs. My suspicion is that one application would be stronger because it shows focused interest and purpose, but I do not know this as fact. Good luck with the process.
  2. The BU STH offered a Th.D. until a few years ago, it has been replaced with (or just renamed?) a Ph.D. program. The GRS doctoral degree is a classic academic degree preparing one to teach at a college or university. The STH doctoral degree takes a more theological approach and is more typically a credential for teaching at a seminary or other institution with.a religious mission. The STH and GRS share faculty so you can work with the same profs in either program.
  3. I have never heard of this. One of my language tests was translating a couple of pages out of a book that a prof picked out. The other test was translating a few pages out of a book that I picked out.
  4. These tests usually check reading ability, and often allow dictionaries, so do not waste time learning conversational, etc. I learned reading ability of Spanish in one summer. I only learned first and third person in past and present tense. What written stuff will be in second person future? I memorized vocab from a frequency list. I passed the Spanish reading test with ease, using common sense for context. I did already know French so this was even easier.
  5. The MDiv is intended as a professional degree for ministry, not a stepping stone for doctoral work, which you intend to pursue. When I was in div school a while ago the conventional wisdom was that the MDiv was better than the MTS for getting into PhD programs, but the MTS students did just fine getting accepted into PhD. programs. I think that with the extra year and requirements, the MDiv does not make sense for a person intending doctoral work right after.
  6. In my experience at HDS the student body was more confessional than the faculty. There were plenty of "Jesus is God" students and many who thought otherwise. But not a problem to be Christian there. I appreciated the challenges to my faith
  7. Students at HDS can take classes at any of the 10 schools in the Boston Theological Institute: Andover Newton Theological School Boston College Department of Theology Boston College School of Theology and Ministry (formerly Weston Jesuit School of Theology) Boston University School of Theology Episcopal Divinity School Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Harvard Divinity School Hebrew College and its Rabbinical School Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology St. John's Seminary This is an amazing resource, besides being able to take courses in any relevant dept. at Harvard. You also have the resources of the Center for Study of World Religions right on campus. The HDS MTS is a resilient degree that I think tops Chicago.
