Is anyone getting "antsy" that they haven't heard anything back even though there has nothing been posted on the results board?

Scalia got a reaction from whirlpool4 in Emailing POI?
Just an update on how emailing profs has gone for me.

I have emailed 7 prospective profs at programs I'm interested in and it's been only 24 hours and I've already received 4 responses:
One sent me a really detailed message on what she's working on and offered to exchange articles that she's interested in.
One thanked me for my inquiry but stated that they weren't sure if they would be excepting grad students because they were the newly announced department chair
One very briefly stated that they would be accepting grad students
The last one said they would be accepting grad students and would be looking for my application (they know my undergraduate advisor

So overall it has been fairly successful I think. One note; I did follow the introduce yourself, state your interest in working with them, ask if they were taking grad students formula described in a post earlier in this thread.

Scalia reacted to Scalia in Should I read into correspondence?
I was emailing a prof. to see if he was taking a grad student next fall. He sent me a very detailed reply asking for my vita etc. I returned his email and then the response back was very detailed info about the program and how it might be a good place for me to research my interests.

I thought this email was above and beyond the call of an email to see if he was simply taking a student. Am I reading too much into this in terms of my chances of admittance? Was it simply being polite and trying to get applicants even though it is a very competitive program?

I've found that a couple of PhD. programs in Canada have faculty members that are doing research very compatible with my own interests. Does anybody know how programs are seen at schools like UBC, McGill, or York University are seen in comparison to their American counterparts? Will not having a degree from a US institution be a barrier to finding work in academia within the U.S.?

As always, any insight is much appreciated.

From your knowledge, what are the most competitive fields in terms of admissions in psychology. Other than obviously clinical psychology, in areas like social, cognitive, counseling, quantitative, etc. what are the hardest to get into?

Scalia got a reaction from kaykaykay in Choosing between JD or PhD?
I've considered a joint degree, but everyone that I've talked to that has either a PhD. or JD has emphasized that you will probably only use one of the degrees in your career so the extra time spent completing the other isn't worth the opportunity costs. Also, the only market I think that it's an advantage to have both degrees is legal academia and it is extremely difficult it is to break into that field.

    Slacktivist,

Don't worry, you're not the only one that's fighting an uphill battle in the upcoming admissions cycle. Although I have an extremely strong gpa, I'm coming from an unknown schools and will have only completed math through calc II and stats with no econometrics. However, like you, I think that my gre scores will be strong so I'm trying to see if I can squeeze into a top 25 program. One thing that might end up working in my favor is I'm doing rudimentary research in the field of my interest with out department chair. If you have any additional questions or if I can be of help feel free to pm me.

Somewhere up on this thread, a poster mentioned going to the best quality program instead of making a decision based upon a subfield preference. This is something I've wrestled with myself when it comes to applying to schools. I know that some schools would obviously be a poor fit, but how important is it that you go to a school known for your particular interest whether it be institutions, political psychology, or theory?

Just wanted to wish everyone who's still in my boat of waiting on a wait list and a happy weekend.

FYI the latest Rochester post is just another troll...I'm still playing the waiting game!

I have to say I'm going more crazy now waiting to hear from my one wait list school (or at least the one whose wait list I stayed on, haha!) than I was waiting to hear during the normal cycle of February and early March. It was a lot easier then when there were a bunch of you guys on gradcafe to have for moral support. Now I feel like I'm the only one here whose future plans are contingent upon what happens with the wait list cycle.

Anybody else in the same boat? Would be great to know that I'm not the only one tearing my hair out waiting for the second full week of April! Anyways, glad I got to vent

By the way, I hate feeding the trolls, but I'm just throwing this out there: The Harvard admits and the Rochester off-waitlist admit are all fakes as far as I'm concerned until someone actually posts on this forum. Harvard wouldn't reject people and then let them in. Similarly, Rochester made very clear I would be the first person that they would talk to if there was an opening. Apparently the dude who's 30 and lives with mom and dad in the basement where he looks at porn all day due to his long-term unemployment started missing the fun he was having on the results postings, so he decided to mess with the people who are still waiting now or who were disappointed not to get into Harvard. Oh well, what a loser...

    1. You can't know that much about me because I'm no longer in undergrad.

    2. I didn't apply to any Ivy league schools for undergrad. I applied to two schools I really wanted to go to early decision and that's it. How's that for being a "prestige whore"?

    3. I have my reasons for wanting to do the MA. They have nothing to do with trying to get into a better Political Science PhD program later on. They are my own personal reasons that I don't care to share with random people on the internet.

    4. I don't believe that I will come to regret having accidentally--and indirectly--divulged where i went to undergrad to people bored enough to try to figure out who some random person on the internet is. If it ever comes up (and I doubt it even will), I think I can accurately say that I stupidly asked people on an internet discussion forum for advice and my motives, character, and intentions were completely misconstrued by several people who decided to start hating me.

I'm a regular over at PSJR, and I stumbled over here yesterday. I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU ARE STILL DEBATING THIS CHOICE.

Look, I know where you go to undergrad (FYI you should be more careful about what personal info you put on the internet. You WILL come to regret it later). The kids at your school are prestige whores who are all bitter at not having got into an Ivy. I think you are letting this ethos inform your choice about grad school, and it is swaying you towards the Yale MA offer. To those of us who've done grad school and know what we're talking about, the solution is obvious: you should take the Wisconsin PhD offer. But because you are posting to a board full of ignorant undergrads, you're going to get poor advice.

    GO TO WISCONSIN AND STFU.

Scalia reacted to APGradApplicant in Turning Down Rochester?
Hey guys. So as most of you know, I've been waitlisted at University of Rochester, which is currently my first choice. I'm just trying to get some idea as to what my chances will be at getting offered a spot (I'm first on the list currently). What I'm wondering is if there is anybody (and one person has PMed me letting me know this already) who was offered admission and has explicitly turned them down at this point? I know GradCafe isn't necesarilly the best representation of all applicants, but thought it at least wouldn't hurt to start this thread. Thanks!

Some poster put too much information, has been identified, and consequently has been mocked and harassed. Some claim that the schools that have accepted her will cancel their offer, etc.

Surprisingly, I haven't heard much about MIT on this board. I'm assuming that they primarily focus on methods and tend to admit students with math and science based backgrounds?
