Rutgers is a good program...It's somewhere I certainly would be happy to be but I was rejected. Some of the studios are really really huge, and some are small. There are about 35 students in the program. Some of the work I saw coming out of there I felt was really really strong, and some I was not as impressed by, but sometimes that's a matter of personal opinion. I don't know if you could have a car in NB...but I do know it's pretty close and easy access to NYC which is cool. I know there are about 35 students in the program which is interdisciplinary. I know there are some highly regarded artists on the faculty there as well. And yes, Rutgers has a really good reputation. I also believe, but could be wrong, that most students at Rutgers get a TA, at least in the second year. You might want to check on that.

So, weirdly about 1.5 miliseconds after I sent an email to The City College of NY asking them why I had not yet received an admissions decision....an email popped up from them saying I was accepted. Really strange. With that aside...does anyone have any thoughts on the program or know anything about it? No one has really been able to tell me anything so far, and even friends of mine who went undergrad at SVA have literally heard nothing about it. If anyone has any info at all...even thoughts on the reputation, or whatever you have heard, I would love to hear so it can help me make a decision.

Nope. It says online decisions will be mailed by April 1st. I know that some people are accepted without an interview, and some do get an interview. So a lack of interview at this point doesn't mean you're out

hey vieveview, not to be stalkerish, but I saw your post in the forum from last year regarding The City College of NY.....it said you got an email end of March last year from them saying your app was STILL under review. If you don't mind my asking....what do you know about that program/ when did you finally receive a decision? I applied there this year...and stillll waiting to hear back. I had tried to visit the program in the fall but they didn't get back to me about it. It is kind of mysterious but I applied anyways for the hell of it.

I was rejected from SAIC, and did NOT get that email, so maybe that means things are looking good for you

well what schools have bad reputations? (out of curiosity)
-
Yea kinda small compared to others I have seen....but there are definitely nice galleries...and many schools wouldn't give students an entire gallery to themselves for an MFA thesis show, but JMU does!
-
I went to JMU for undergrad. The grad studios are kinda small, I won't lie. I would sneak a peak in those studios whenever I could to see the work. If you have any other questions about the program....I kind of know a lot about it as I would talk to the MFA students a lot, and would even listen in on their critiques, etc etc.

Thanks for the pep talk, yea I am happy to have one. I've actually been taking my rejections well....Haven't cried, haven't had a drink, I've just looked at the letters, said, "o well..." threw them in the trash, and then forgotten about them 5 minutes later! It's actually weird. I thought I would be emotional about it but I really haven't been. Now I am expecting probable rejections from Hunter and SVA in particular. Just wish I could be refunded on those pricey application fees.

aww I'm sure it seemed much worse to you than it really was. I always think I'm horrible at public speaking, and then when I once saw myself doing it on video I looked fine. I have the same problem, when I'm nervous I'm just not myself and I say un-intelligent things, but o well. I would just not worry about it, really it always seems far worse than it actually is!
-
I feel like if I were you, I would accept...and yea I'm sure you can change your mind and take it back, but I would assume there is some kind of fee/ security deposit type of thing that could easily be like $500 that they won't refund you. I think that would be the worst case scenario. That really blows that they are making you decide so early

I'm embarrassed to admit that yet again...I have been rejected. This time from Rutgers. 6 down, 4 to go.
-
thanks for the insight. I agree with you. I am just wondering how much is too much ya know? But thats great you were able to get a lot of funding to make your loans at least a little bit smaller!
-
Thanks for the info. Mine still says no decision, but I haven't gotten a letter of any kind. On last years forum someone was rejected on 3/22....so I wonder if they are holding out on those. I hate when they do that.
-
anyone else still not heard from Rutgers yet? Anyone else still not heard from Hunter yet? And here's another question for everyone/ anyone, out of curiosity: what is the largest amount of loans you would be willing to take out for school? As in the largest amount of debt you would be willing to take on before waiting another year and applying again to try and get a better deal? I'm just wondering what others would do. I feel like even if you get a huge scholarship, there would still be inevitable loans of some degree for living expenses, right? I mean, it would be hard to have more than a summer job if you had a TA position.
-
Me too. I feel lame with my many rejections.
-
Congrats!!!! Are you gonna go there??
-
Let me know what you all decide to do! For me it's not NYAA, but another school, and I'm in the same boat with the $ thing. I just don't know what to do. But I'm also waiting to hear from other schools.
-
amandapants, I'm in the same boat about being scared of debt....I am trying to decide if the debt is worth it. It's so hard. It seems like a no-brainer, but when you want to attend the program badly it hurts to turn down the offer. :-/

I heard that SVA does not interview everyone! A lot of people get accepted there without the interview, don't worry!!! They just interview the people that they feel they have more questions for.

I almost just had a heart attack. I was looking on the u. delaware art website, and checked out the admissions procedures/ requirements to see if I could see my status somewhere. I saw something about an ADDITIONAL essay, when I only wrote one....thank god I had been looking at the undergrad admissions, so I'm alright. That was a big scare.
-
Congrats!!! Rutgers is a great school. I just checked my status after I read this, and mine still says no decision.

Not unless you are Jeff Koons. Then you wear a suit.

Some of the studio spaces are massive with very high ceilings. Overall the studios were great...but many had no windows. The big ones were just really really big. They told me that first year students can choose to stay in their studios, or switch to a new one their second year. Some were smaller than others, and the students said they suspected that they were given larger studio sizes based on merit. (I'm pretty sure that was just a rumor though). Not all of the studios were massive, so you are not guarenteed a big one. The small ones weren't bad though. And facilities....very nice gallery, and I saw the woodshop which had plenty of stuff although I don't use that much anyways because I only build stretcher bars. I'm trying to remember everything else I saw...I think that was about it. I think I may have seen the printmaking area but I saw so many schools they are blending in my mind.
-
Yayyyyy!!!!! I'm just happy to not be flat out rejected...even if I am rejected in the end, then at the very least they considered me instead of doing it straight up. I guess that counts for something, at least in my head. Plus I still have some hope. Thanks for that info. I know that Rutgers has around 35 MFA students...and they are all different disciplines rather than a specific number for painting, sculpture, etc.
