Where should I start?
sarabethke replied to kaiphi's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Why don't you ask your friend at Harvard about her decision-making process because she seems to be interested in lit and journalism as well. And just something to add--my roommate's sister graduated with a bachelor's in journalism, got her master's on a Fulbright in the UK, and now works for the Guardian in New York. There are definitely reasons to pursue a master's in journalism if that's what you want to do, and ways to get that to work toward your traveling/wandering goals. -
Fall 2016 Entry Applicants
sarabethke replied to bhr's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
It worked for Mississippi, but I guess thats because I was on their waitlist. Oregon sent me a vague "we'll get back with you shortly" email which was followed by a rejection yesterday. Indiana never got back to me lol! Awkward. -

I also recently decided to take advantage of the DGS's offer to give me as much information as possible both at Davis and Mississippi. They've both been kind, helpful, and encouraging, even though they admit that they just don't have a lot of information at this point. I encourage asking! It definitely made me feel better.- 145 replies

I feel like they are, but they emailed me saying they're sending decisions by the end of the week. -

Thanks. I'm waiting on Oregon, Indiana, and Mississippi. One of my friends just got an offer from Oregon though so I guess that one's a goner. I saw a couple acceptances to Indiana like a week ago but it seemed like very few and I was kind of hoping to see a few more before deciding that one was done. How did you ask about your position on the waitlist? I'd love to get more information from Davis, even though I'm also afraid it will just depress me. Also I heard from them a few weeks ago and didn't really ask anything... -
Fall 2016 Entry Applicants
sarabethke replied to bhr's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Thanks! Yeah, from what people have described on the results board it seems like some people ask generally and then the dept looks them up, or they say "I emailed about my status" which made me think they asked specifically. I just don't want to ask a general question and get a general answer. I wanna make sure they look me up and just tell me already! lol -
Fall 2016 Entry Applicants

So when one emails a department/DGS to ask about the status of one's application...what does one say? I don't want to seem impatient, and I don't know if I should ask WHEN decisions will go out or just about myself in particular. Any advice? Or should I just wait -

My policy for now is just to wait. If it's a week or more after a lot of people seem to have heard something, I'd think an email is fine. -
Columbia English
sarabethke replied to lostillusions12's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes, I know, I just see that as something out of my control and something they'd decide based on all my application materials. The things you can change about your actual application are what I'm concerned with once You've researched schools and found what you think is a good fit, and lousyconnection already addressed those things. -

Thanks for the insight! Writing a whole new writing sample is a big change, and honestly if I had to change one thing about my application it would be that. Ironically enough it's also about a Canturbury tale I'm glad all those changes really helped! Congratulations! -

I seriously doubt it's the GRE. More likely writing sample, statement of purpose, cv stuff, but I don't know. -

I would actually like to hear from the Columbia acceptance who said they were rejected from all 7 programs they applied to last year and completely changed their application and now has several acceptances. What exactly did you do that you think improved your application so much? Because I'm not sure what I'd do differently at this point. -

I'm waitlisted at Davis, and while I'd be happy to go to any of the school I'm waiting to hear from (Oregon, Indiana, Mississippi) Davis is pretty much my dream. I don't have any details about my position or movement or anything.- 145 replies

I have an academia.edu account, but no papers uploaded (which is the point of it) because I'm kind of confused about how it's helpful for me. If I don't have anything published quite yet, would it be useful at all to put up seminar papers or things I've read for conferences? Even if I plan on eventually adapting them for publication? And when I am published I won't be able to just post those articles, correct? Is an earlier version of it okay or not okay or, again, useful in any way? I feel a little silly just having my face up there and interests but without anything to really show.

YES. Happy to have something definite, even though I was pretty ready for a rejection since like 6 acceptances popped up on the results board WEEKS ago. 614 applications?! Madness! -

Deleted my last comment because this one just says it all. ^^^^ Here's hoping programs contact some of us today saying, "We love you and your research interests. Will you be our Valentine? For the next five years?" -
