  1. If you haven't checked yet, check out student doctor networks psychology board because they have a pretty extensive acceptance, waitlist, and rejection thread http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=57
  2. I'm going to go to duquesne! I currently live in Pittsburgh for UG so if you have any questions just let me know!
  3. You are going to be hard pressed to find a suitable apartment for $600 as most studio apartments are are around that much. My apartment, 1 bedroom, kinda small in Friendship shared my my fiance and I is 700 a month. I am not sure I would want to live in Wilkinsburg because I've heard stories about the crime in areas like that. I've recently been on the look for a bigger apartment and they run about 800/month. We found a 2 bedroom house finally, but that is running us about $895/month. I would say Friendship/Morningside/Highland Park are the cheaper areas. Oakland (South mainly) is filled with over priced slumlords (I lived there for a year and had to get out). In Pittsburgh, many people are surprised about the price of housing (including me). I've been in Pittsburgh for my undergrad and I am staying for grad school and I still love it. It's easy to get by without a car, I haven't had one here I take the bus but my fiance who works does have one. Parking in Pittsburgh is actually ridiculous and expensive so I prefer not to drive IN the city if at all possible. It would be really easy to drive to say Philly but it would be like a weekend trip. Pittsburgh has a lot of stuff to do. One thing that throws people off is that although Pittsburgh is a city, it feels more like a small city with a hometown feel. Its not a city like Chicago by any means, its much smaller but still just as awesome.
  4. I don't know if you are all applying for a PhD, but there is a forum that has threads of interview dates, acceptance dates and schools that have already rejected. In the first post is an updated list separated by clinical, school, counseling, etc. Also, there is a MA, MSW forum under the general psychology forum as well. For PhD, PsyD programs the link is: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=57 For MA programs the link is: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=207 (it doesnt have a full list like the PhD/PsyD program forum but you can search your school)
  5. If I don't get a GA or anything it will be about 100k plus my undergrad which I think is around 30-40k at this point. My program doesn't guarantee funding like other programs do (like clinical psych) but sometimes there is a definite trade off going to your dream school or going to a school you might not like If it's worth it to you, I don't see a major problem with educational debt
  6. This is awesome because I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels like that! When I go home, my family for the most part supports me as with everyone else, but they don't really understand I guess. I get it worse from my fiance's family because they encouraged him not to get his BA so it seems they cannot fathom why I would not surpass getting my Ph.D. for having babies and avoiding all the debt since I'm finally out of college. I get the comment CONSTANTLY "Don't think you're better than us because you have some fancy degree" (from both families). I was basically drilled about why I would want to spend 5 more years in school, and I'll be in debt forever, etc. It kinda takes away from the excitement of getting into a program when the odds have been stacked against you from the get go. But we all have to remind ourselves from time to time that what we are doing is awesome, and it is something to be really proud of even if people really dont understand/are excited as you are
  7. My main focus is research and academia... but we'll see.
  8. I think part of it is also networking. If someone is familiar with you and what you do, your chances are higher than someone who looks really good on paper.
