  1. This kind of question depends on who's on the committee. There's no way to say, really. Some people like the dedication and demonstrated interest and experience of the MA student, others like the speed and intensity of the UG student. For my degree, they like students that can finish before they hit their intellectual peak in the field: 29. Otherwise, you really never know. Just apply and see what happens. No reason to freak out about these things right now. Send out applications and you'll get their opinion on your application. Don't take any of this personally, just make your app the best it can be and freak out during the waiting game instead. ~Signed, Someone who's gotten 2 rejections already, but isn't discouraged.
  2. My CV is on math.uga.edu/~tkelly
  3. Today marks the 4 week mark, right? So we're supposed to hear in the next 2 weeks. Anyone heard yet?
  4. 16 schools. 9 Reaches, 4 Good shots 3 "Safeties" (hopefully) due to good fit and good connection there.
  5. Columbia is a great choice. With Greene and Judes and such, they make a great place to do this. There is a Math Physics research group, as well as joint work with their inst. for Astrophysics Strings and Cosmology. Look it up! EDIT: Think Penn and MIT too.
  6. I had this issue when I started my Masters in Math. What happened with me is that I, in a discussion about the year, was asked about my funding from her, and I told her I didn't have any, to which in a week later (when someone threatened to make me his student) she gave me a modest portion of her grant to work under her. This next year is my next year, and the Assoc. Head is giving me a TAship since he's now so low on teachers since our university just got the VIGRE grant (2.3mil/3 years, extends to 3.8/5, only research), and we lost so many TAs. Basically, try to stretch the options, really look. I applied for 8 scholarships this year, and ended up getting enough money to do my research in Italy over the summer with another university. My end advice though is to not jump in without any funding at all...because you don't know how much they care if they don't give you anything.
  7. Are they available? Anyone know them? I can't find them on the website...
  8. Agreed. I got tuition waived and have 5000$ for my current (first) year.
  9. Does anyone know if LGBTQ advocacy and rights work counts for diversity in Ford's eye? I'm a Math applicant who wants to promote LGBTQ youth (as well as any underrepresented group!) in the sciences, and I work on LGBTQ work on campuses (2 different organizations, two officer spots, Student leadership advisory committee, social justice committee, etc.).
  10. Okay. That is good to know about Utah because Christopher Hacon is amazing! I'm really looking more around NE and Boston since my boyfriend of 2 years (kinda almost partner) is going to (EDIT: He changed his mind, Stanford now!) Law next year. Where did you apply for school, if you don't mind me asking (pm is okay if you prefer!)? And I am very happy to hear that about Berkeley because they do some awesome computational Alg. Geom!
  11. Thank you. I feel like I have a lot working for me, it is just the Verbal score that may throw up a red flag as well as a W in one of my math courses (Note: 2 PhD prelim courses, research, and 9 other hours in other departments, while being a TA DOES NOT WORK!!). Also, Utah is kind of a place I don't really want to go, but may go if that's the only place I get in. The social climate in Utah is not what I desire per se, since I am LGBT identified. Thank you for the information! I will be applying to NSF, so that makes me feel cautious. Thank you for the information!! Thank you all!!
  12. Thanks (the comment on the quant section is exactly my worry: I didn't get a single 800 on my SAT when I took it three times. Gah!!). The one issue I'm worried about are cutoffs. I think my soft factors are really nice and my LoR's are pretty (three Algebraic Geometers =] ). If I don't get knocked out by cutoffs, then I feel like I will be happy no matter the outcome. Too bad I won't ever find out. It's just that Harvard is my top choice, and Joe Harris fits perfectly with what I'm doing now (esp. since my thesis advisor works/talks with him).
  13. This is really true (with the addition of River Mill as another place to stay away from). There are some really nice places to stay if you don't mind a bit of a drive to school. If not, there is a great bus system to help you out if you don't have a car (which is free to all students). Good luck with all! By the way, if anyone wants to know anything about the LGBT community and climate for LGBT students, I am here, so just PM me. (I'm doing my BS/MA at UGA and am really involved in the LGBT community.)
  14. Hey all, Hope the waiting game is going alright. I'm applying for '09 admissions for Math PhD's (Algebraic Geometry) and I took the GRE last year. I'm getting my BS/MA in Math, and an AB in Romance Languages (Spanish/French/Italian) at a mid-ranked Large Public University. Here are my stats 800q/580v/5w (11/20/2008 EDIT:770, 81%) subj Math 3.90 GPA Will have 3 years of Research, Have 1 classified publication, 1 publication (to appear) and 1 preprint (now submitted... waiting...) I'm hoping to apply for the big schools (See Signature) Main question: Should I take the GRE over for the 580v to improve? How hard do I have to nail the subject GRE? I took it halfway through my sophomore year so I could do the joint Masters with my Bachelors over my four years because I was taking grad classes anyways. What are my chances?
