  1. Hi all, I took the GRE twice and here are my scores: GRE1: 155 V/161 Q/4 AWA GRE1: 158 V/161 Q/3 AWA Which score should I choose to submit considering I'm applying for a more quant program? Thanks
  2. Hey all, I'm taking some courses to fulfill the pre-requisite requirements from the graduate program at the local community college. The math courses I'm taking are Linear Algebra and Cal 2, from the same professor. I'm doing pretty well in them, probably will get A in both. Do you think it would be appropriate to submit a rec letter from him? I'm applying for the data science program at Columbia, and one of my other letter is already coming from my undergrad institution. Do you think they would prefer the other letter also from my undergrad school? Also my GRE quant score is not too strong at 161Q and it barely passes the minimum so I thought a letter from the math teacher would be helpful. Thanks.
  3. Hey all, I retook the GRE yesterday wanting to improve my Quant score. I ended up score higher on verbal while quant stays the same at 161Q/158V. Both times I freak out during the last quant section and had to kiss the 90th percentile goodbye. While I consistently score around 164Q or more on the practice tests, do you think I should retake the GRE again? I'm applying to Columbia Data Science and 161Q is pretty low for them. My undergrad GPA is 3.68 with 1.5 years of work exp (internship and full time with 3 companies) in finance and IT. Not sure if this will help make up for the low GRE quant score. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  4. Hi all, The program I'm applying to prefer 2 out of 3 LORs to come from my undergrad professors. I was able to get one rec letter from a professor who is also the director of my undergrad program and 1 from my employer. For the third letter, I'm debating between a professor and my former manager at the company I interned with. The professor taught the Business Internship class, which basically a class you take when you want college credit for the internship. I know him well so he maybe able to provide me with a strong recommendation letter. On the other hand, I could get a stellar LORs from my former manager. I'm really debating between the two here and not sure which one to pick. I don't want to send extra LORs either because I have been told that may even hurt the application. Thanks!
  5. Hi Rich, I did! I will be using the Princeton Review MSTs. Thanks for the recommendation!
  6. Not sure if you have purchased Magoosh, but if your timeline is a month (like myself), I think using EmpowerGRE maybe a better approach. I used Magoosh in the past couple of months, it has great video resources (covering all GRE topics) great questions and video explanation for each. However, since your time is short, I think you should use something that provide you the tactics, which EmpowerGRE is fantastic for. I signed up today and have been using it in the last 4 hours (I'm doing quant only), and absolutely love it. It provides strategies to tackle different types of questions, which has helped me to increase efficiency and gave me an entirely new ways to approach problems. They also have the 1 month Score Booster study plan, which outlines lessons you can take to get you ready for the next GRE test. Best of luck!
  7. Hi Rich, yes those are the practice tests from ETS. I want to apply to one of the master programs at Columbia so I averaged out the score of the accepted candidates on the quantnet tracker (https://www.quantnet.com/tracker/), and it gives me 167 to be the average. Given my GPA is pretty mediocre, I think I at least I should get 167 to be considered.
  8. Hi friends, So I took the GRE yesterday and got 161Q, 154V. I was extremely disappointed in myself as the score is lower than the average of my practice tests, which goes around 164Q, 158V. My test consisted 3 verbal and 2 quant sections. After the first Quant section, I proceeded to the second section and the first 2 questions were easy. And being already anxious, I thought I bombed the first section and now got the easy section instead. By the next couple of questions, I had a panic attack and wasted a lot of time worrying before realizing it was actually the hard section (stupid, I know). So the panic attack + the hard section = I bombed the second section. Anyways, I'm retaking it at the end of September or the first week of October and will need to improve my Quant score to 167 for the program I want to apply. Since I spent the last couple of months study, I have exhausted all tests including Manhattan Prep MSTs, Kaplan, PowerPrep and Magoosh. Now I don't know what else to do or where to start since I have covered most of the material. My grad program deadlines are February 2016, so I can delay the second GRE test until November if necessary. I just need your advices on how to improve my quant score, since I understand most of the topics, but need help with efficiency. My budget allows me to take a prep course but I don't know if this is the best way, since they will be covering materials I have already learned. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you
