  1. Hmmm, I wonder. I don't think with me specifically the problem could have been the writing sample, as I was quite happy with it, and have received favorable feedback. My paper was not just a lit review. Basically I compiled a corpus of bilingual interaction in a community of practice. I took some theories on CS, and came to original (as far as I know, so probably not lol) conclusions regarding code-switching in a community of practice. Mine was like 20 pages long. It was originally a seminar paper; we are required to at least attempt to formulate original ideas in our seminar papers. I mean, I didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, but I didn't just review the literature. Maybe it was my SOP? I thought CUNY was a great fit. As is Arizona. (Pittsburgh not so much and I don't really know how I got in). I guess something was missing. I mean it seems that they liked me enough that they want me to attend, but not enough to provide funding? Ah well, no use dwelling. Time will tell if I do end up getting funding, and I'll definitely know more once I visit Arizona and CUNY.
  2. I wouldn't assume yet.. I don't think they're quite finished making decisions. I am visiting nyc next week so I emailed them to ask them about my application, because obviously if I get in then I want to visit the campus (and won't be able to fly to the US again to do so). I got a reply that I've been wait listed for a fellowship, with an alternate offer to attend their MA program unfunded. Seems like they're only accepting people to the PhD who they can offer fellowships to. I guess I'll visit, in case I do end up getting in with a fellowship. Ugh it's like every acceptance I've gotten has been like "oh but wait listing for funding!" I'm obviously so happy that I've received these acceptances. I wonder regarding the funding though. Is it because my GRE scores weren't that great? My GPA? I feel like with funding the numbers matter more
  3. Thanks, that's solid advice. Monday it is!
  4. Thanks for the advice. I dunno, I guess I feel uncomfortable emailing the POIs (ie the professors I mentioned in my SOP) because it's not like I've previously communicated with them. Maybe I'll wait until Monday *sigh*
  5. Finally received the rejection from UIUC that I knew was coming. Now if only CUNY would get back to me! I'm flying to NY next week to visit my parents before flying to Arizona, and only have a few days with my parents whom I haven't seen in a year. I need to know if I need to squeeze in a visit to CUNY's campus or not! I don't have the money nor time to fly back to the US for another visit. I'm seriously considering sending them an email to ask, but I wouldn't know who to send the email to! The program chair? The admissions office at the graduate center? Like I don't want to be pushy or anything, but I need to know
  6. ahhhhh who hear from CUNY?! I am soooo waiting to hear from them! Now I'm sitting with my email open convinced that I'll get an email any minute. ....and I just got my official acceptance to the ANLI program at Arizona, via email. That is really exciting, of course, because now it's more official. However, the letter stated that I was being waitlisted for funding . This is really nerve-wracking, because I've also been waitlisted for funding at Pittsburgh, but for some reason I thought that funding is guaranteed at Arizona, so I wasn't worried. And I don't know how worried I should be. I guess I'll know more details at the recruitment weekend. It would just suck to not get funding at any program I got in to.
  7. I'm actually sort of dreading that because 1. I'm not an especially active person 2. I literally own sandals and rain boots and that's it haha. I think I'll borrow more sensible shoes for the trip But yeah, totally excited. Mostly happy that it's not cold over there! I checked and the weather is about the same as it is in israel, so that's awesome
  8. *sigh* thanks for the update. I guess my prospects are looking dim with UIUC
  9. Congrats on the nomination, and the Arizona acceptance! I still haven't heard anything back from UIUC. But yeah I'm so super excited for arizona! I'll def be going to the recruitment weekend; have my ticket booked and everything!
  10. My tortoise's name is Elektra Von Hammershmitt. So Vonham
  11. Second acceptance as well! Pittsburgh! It feels nice to finally have some good news coming in Now if only the other two programs would show me some signs of life.....
  12. Flying from Israel is also ridiculously expensive. I was lucky enough to get a really good deal on the ticket though! Funny thing is, the domestic ticket ended up costing me just as much! The department said they can partially reimburse me on the domestic ticket, but not the international. Oh well. I need to really cut down on spending for the rest of the semester. Too bad we don't even have good, cheap packaged ramen
  13. I saw that someone said that they received the notice via the website. So I logged in using the Wolverine login info they sent me when I first submitted my application, and a new button "view decision" appeared, so I clicked it.
  14. Got an official rejection from Mich. Glad they didn't keep me hanging too long. Knew I was rejected when I did not receive an invite to the interviews. Ah well.
  15. Hey there Interviews seemed to have been sent out for michigan a couple of weeks ago. We commiserated about it a couple of pages back. If you search "linguistics michigan" on the results page you'll see the interview posts. Of course nothing is final, but I was a bit discouraged not to get an interview invite Aside from UCLA and mich, what other schools did you apply for?
  16. UIUC funds MA students in linguistics usually, and guarantees funding if they accept you with the intent to continue to PhD. At least that's what the website says.
  17. I still fear this. I'm just happy that at least this time I'll be able to vote...I moved to Israel before I was of legal voting age in the US, so I never voted.
  18. ~positive thoughts abound~ *when* you get into a Canadian school, there will be a day when you're sitting at your desk sipping tea and reading ridiculously interesting articles, and you'll hear a ridiculous news story about something totally weird going on in the US, and you'll sigh happily, knowing you dodged a bullet there. (disclaimer: I've never actually been to Canada, but I've always thought it'd probably be a better place to live)
  19. Canada is clearly superior in all things that matter
  20. Interesting! I am actually taking a course on loan word phonology this semester. We talk mostly about English loanwords into Hebrew (cuz I live in israel ). But my term paper in that class is the opposite: english hebrew bilingual use of loanwords from hebrew to english. From a previous project (my writing sample) I have a pretty hefty corpus of bilingual interaction and basically am trying to tease apart loanwords from 1 word switches. I actually don't know the details of the funding package, except that for linguistics funding is guaranteed for 4 years, and for the ANLI program, 5 years. But I don't know amounts or anything. Nor do I know anything about Tucson, except that I perused the city guide thread here and it said that a 1 bedroom apartment costs around $400-600, which is pretty cheap coming from where I am. Anyway if you were told numbers kindly PM me that information. Otherwise I figure I'll just ask when I'm at the recruitment weekend.
  21. Yay! Linguistics PhD? I applied for the joint anthropology and linguistics PhD. My research interests the interactional and macrosocial forces that shape language use in multilingual and minority language contact situations. I've worked with Scottish Gaelic before, and hope to continue with the language. Arizona has a celtic research group, and has a grant to study Scottish Gaelic, so yay! I'm so ridiculously excited!! What are your research interests?
  22. I saw on the results page that people got answers a few weeks ago. Search "Linguistics UIUC" and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also a few days ago someone got accepted to the MA program. I applied for the MA/PhD and haven't heard anything yet. I don't know whether this is an assumed rejection, or that they haven't finished their decisions for the MA/PhD program. I think we discussed it on this thread a page or two back
  23. Is it like an in person interview? Or skype interview? Is it with your POI, or a bunch of people? I was emailed by my POI in UCSB (ultimately rejected) and Pittsburgh (interviewing in an hour!) asking for a Skype interview, and I didn't receive a list of questions. Just a general like "let's talk about your research interests" kind of thing. So I have like no idea what I'm going to be asked.
  24. Thanks! Yeah I was just telling my parents today that I wish CUNY would hurry up and make decisions already! Because I'm going to Arizona's recruitment weekend, I'm going to stop in NYC for a few days to visit my parents (who live there), and it would just be so perfect to visit at CUNY as well. (totally off topic but I'm so excited to go to the US for a visit! Haven't seen my parents in like a year! And I've never been to Arizona but I hear it's beautiful.)
