In that case, either take fuzzy's advice or ask the program directly whether or not any funding is available for your prospective/intended degree program. If they say no, then you decline the interview. If they say "maybe", "possibly", "potentially", etc., then you do the interview.

Do the interview, you have nothing to lose (a few hours of sleep don't count!). You aren't wasting their time unless you have already decided that you will absolutely not attend. If you're not sure, talk to them, and then see what kind of offer they make you. If it's unfunded or you are offered insufficient funds, you could consider using your other offer as leverage to ask for an increase in your stipend, or you could just accept the other offer. Either way, it seems to me that you owe it to yourself to give yourself as many options as possible and choose from a position of knowledge, not speculation.

I agree--do the interview if the school is a dream for you. Give yourself all the opportunities and options possible. Interviews are the worst, but you don't want to have regrets later just because you weren't willing to be slightly uncomfortable for a couple hours.
    Good luck!

At least do the interview. It sounds like you'll have a bunch of regrets later (possibly years down the road) if you don't. Pretty much everyone knows that you can't do a PhD without funding so I wouldn't worry about that part yet.

@piglet33 "you're very self-sabotaging" true. I put a lot of value and worth into my education because again, I'm fat and black. When you're me, society says you're an idiot who can't do anything. I love school, I love education in general, so it's just hard. I'm trying to disassociate my competence for grad school from this application process but I'm having trouble doing so--it's one thing if you are rejected from three schools, but it's another if you're rejected from 15. I think I'd still apply if I didn't get in next year, but it would hurt. I'm also terrified of working a job I hate & could have been in without a college education. I have a friend who is currently making at least half of my hourly wage more than I am, and she hasn't gone to college at all so she's debt free.

@kingslayer I know....and the class is required for transfer, so yep lots of unhappy faces! I do mark and ding for attendance, but no dice for some of them!
Also, today I had to give my first verbal warning for a student who was taking a selfie....and I was sitting a few rows behind said student. Because there was a presentation going on. WHAT.

WARNING: This is basically a first world problems post. Probably going to cross post it on the whine thread as well.
I went into this process thinking "please just let me have an acceptance ANYWHERE" and now I have interviews and acceptances coming out of my ears. Two of them want to pay for my entire education, and the third has nominated me for a full tuition waiver for at least the first year--it would be free for me to go and learn. I'm at this standstill where I have no idea what I'm going to do. It's one of the most important decisions I will ever make. These are all great programs, I can see myself succeeding in each of them. It's a major problem because everyone is so nice to me. I'm probably going to make a pro/con list for each of them, give them to my mentors, and hash it out with them. My family will have a lot of say as well (probably all of it), since they are moving wherever I move.
Week 6 of 16 for my last semester of undergrad begins next week, though! Which is good--the stress is starting to mount up. I only need 11 units to graduate, but I'm taking 17 (including a capstone for each of my majors) on top of peer mentoring and internship. I'm basically at school/work from 8 AM-7:20 PM every day. I'd get a job on the weekend in order to save up money for when we move cross country (probably going to take out loans for that, ugh) but I really can't right now. I'm so tired.
Also, the impostor syndrome is intensifying. I don't even know if I'll succeed in grad school, even though I'd like to think I will. Grrr.
Hope you all are doing great and getting into programs you want!

Yuuuuup. I've been rejected from 5 out of my 6 schools. Been out of my Masters program for 3 years now..... I'm tired and sad and contemplating selling organs just because. My organs, not someone else's.

Obviously paying in-state tuition is the best case scenario, but I'm pretty sure in most states you can establish residency after one year, so that second year you would hopefully be paying the in-state rate. Out of state tuition is usually double the rate of an in state resident, which means the out of state programs would be about 33% more altogether. So instead of paying $30,000 you'd be paying $40,000 (plus cost of living) - expensive yes, but not too much more.
Then there are things you may be able to do to make that first year cheaper, like enrolling in less credits for the first 12 months. Or you could save money through things like working twice the amount you normally would have during a summer break, living cheaper than you would have during your paid internship year or even first year of employment to put more money towards student loans, working more between now and then, etc...So that $10,000 extra you're spending can be made up in other ways.
I would have honestly still attended an out of state program if I needed to and would have done a combination of the above...if of course they'd give me both degrees, had good employment/internship placement, and the cost per credit of in state students was below, or very close to, $500.
Also some states have weird residency rules for the purposes of tuition, so you may want to look into the state statutes of the program you are thinking of or talk with their financial aid office to see if you may qualify for something funky. Like for me, I was planning on paying around $50 more per credit through Minnesota's reciprocity with Wisconsin for the first 12 months until I found it unnecessary because I was already considered a resident under Wisconsin law, since I graduated school 10 years ago there and my parents were current residents. So some weird law I happened to fit in gave me a discount.

I did it! Just got a call from one of my top programs I was interested in. They said I impressed them and they would like to offer me a spot in their program! A cohort of 10 students, they said they reviewed around 60 applications and interviewed 25, so I was a little skeptical on my chances but I guess I did what I needed to. That I received a call within a day of their interviews finishing, on a Saturday mind you, means I was within their first core group of candidates and not someone that was bumped up from a waitlist.
The program has everything I need: 100% employment placement after graduation, 100% internship placement, $30,000 program cost, a good fit for me and a program I respect....A Wisconsin program - a state with a decent public education system.
Very excited and relieved I did it. It's awesome knowing in two years from now I'll have my foot in the door to a career. I know school psychology is not the easiest thing to go into, but for me personally it's going to be a great fit and a step up from the 80 hour weeks at $12/hour in group homes I'm grinding at the moment.
Good luck to the rest of you guys!

I think a lot of the time people are harder on themselves than what's deserved. Interviews have definitely been the hardest part of the application process for me though. Getting a 155Q/157V/5aw gre and 710 subject gre score while working 2 full time jobs? Totally fine. Having to answer 5 questions for 15 minutes from a professor? Not so easy. I think I'm most afraid of coming off a certain way, not having enough time to show my strengths, and feeling rushed, which makes it much more difficult than any part of the application process thus far. Like the last interview I had at a really competitive program that accepted 12/65 applicants, I'm pretty sure I screwed up a little in talking too much about how their program was different than the others, hoping to give off the impression I've put a lot of time into thinking about things, but her comment at the end that I "seemed to apply for a lot of programs" made me think I gave off a different impression than I had hoped for. I think though with each interview we get a little better and pick up on things we ought to have done differently. And well....sometimes we just have off days and don't do as well either.
So far the interviews I've had they had about 20% acceptance rates, so I'm definitely psyching myself out over them and its making it pretty stressful, I decided not to overthink and find positive ways to cope with the pressure - exercising for one! I should have some answers in about 3 weeks. After putting in a solid years work in making this happen, I really hope a program out there can look passed some of that awkwardness and see the potential! Hard to say.

@haiqtpi Same. I enjoy torturing myself so I have the weather of all my potential schools in my phone that I check constantly. I keep looking at apartments, but I should be preparing for Plan B. I think 9 colleges is ok! 12 is supposed to be the aim (or so I've heard) but it just depends. I've seen people applying to 24, 27 colleges in one cycle. I  have a friend who is only applying to 1. This has been scary for me because it's not concrete--you could be applying to your PhD program with a 4.0, awesome GRE scores, multiple publications, ect. but acceptance STILL will not be guaranteed.  I have a friend who is applying to 4 schools. All of them are ~top tier~ schools (UCLA, USC, popular schools that get thousands of applications per cycle) and I am genuinely concerned for her even though she has a 4.0 from an ivy.

I think with the Quantitative, the overall percentile is a little misleading. People going into graduate school in Psychology--the ones we're actually competing with--aren't typically as strong in math, and that national percentile is taking into account people going to grad school in fields like Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Engineering  etc. that are going to have way more undergraduate education and skill in Quant than an average Psych major.
I got a 159 in Quantitative first time I took it (75th percentile) and while that wouldn't seem amazing, it's about 95th percentile for Psychology, if you look at the statistics ETS provides, and is basically right there with all of the mean scores for the very top schools in my area. It's very rare to find a mean Quant score in Psychology that's even 160...the highest I've seen which was from a top-2 Clinical program was around 162 in past years. So when you're considering your Quant score on the GRE, I think you have to think of it relative to the field and whom your competing with as well.

Hah. Yeah. That reminds me a bit of my old advisor--great guy, super smart, great advisor--but when we'd set up a meeting, I' say: I get out of class at 3:00, so just let me know when you can meet. Inevitably, he'd say: Okay! Let's meet at 3:00 (in X coffee shop a 20 minute walk from my class). Like.......that was supposed to be the time I can't meet. (I just ended up telling him I got out of class at 3:30 instead.....)

But, probably, you should just remind them--in my case, he was just your normal average absent-minded prof., which seems to be a pretty common (and accurate) trope, so, they probably just didn't read something close enough.

Hey Nathan! I think it's great that you're considering this profession. I'm a senior in CSD and I have loved all of my classes. It's truly a fascinating field, and I think it will be a very rewarding one. That said, only you can decide if it's "worth it" to accumulate that much debt. ASHA's website has a wealth of information about salaries and the profession as a whole and even different programs. I hope this helps!

This would be a really great research study, I think!
imho the thing with applying to a well-know/well-respected university rather than a lesser-known university is the fact that at the well-known one, they choose you, whereas at the lesser-known one, you choose them. I have no idea if that makes sense. I mean, most people will put up with a lot of things for the ability to say they went to an Ivy League rather than an ~unknown regional school. Maybe it puts them on a super high horse when it comes to choosing people.
I feel like for super popular schools, there is more of a chance of them viewing you like cattle rather than a person. After all, it's impossible to view hundreds of applications and treat each one holistically.

I just finished applying to all of my programs! Only took 6 months.
I'm trying not to put the cart way ahead of the horse but it's so hard not to. I've been mentally living in all of these places for months. I think that's the problem with applying to universities that you actually want to go to--you can only pick one. I've been upset because all of the people I've spoken to have been nice. My professor said "of course they're going to be nice, they're trying to court you!" but it makes it so much harder. I'm supposed to find out about another acceptance/rejection today, so we'll see.
