  1. The madness of the wait has already set in, it seems. I've spent the last two hours reading through the acceptances from last year's forum...discovered that the Nepal acceptances came on April 13, and the year before apparently around April 20. I guess those of us who applied for South Asia and specifically Nepal have a month or so of breath-holding ahead of us. Ah well, here's hoping they've streamlined the process since 2009!
  2. Hi everyone...and congratulations to those who got notification of acceptance for Bulgaria. It's exciting to know that news is trickling in. FYI for knownothing and anyone else out there who applied to Nepal, a grantee from 2008 has told me that he heard around Easter (I think about March 26 that year), so maybe we will get lucky this month too. Anyway, I wanted to share this with anyone who might be interested (and willing to jump the gun). It's a full copy of the 2009 handbook for grantees. Maybe some of you have already seen it, but just in case, here is the link: https://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/handbook_09.pdf. Good luck everyone!
  3. That also sounds like an excellent project! Was migration studies not an option? Ah well, sounds like something that falls vaguely under anthropology, which tends to be a vague field in general, haha. I love Boudha...hoping to be living there for the next year! How is your Nepali language? Good luck, I'm right there with you--here's to getting the grants and meeting in Nepal.
  4. Hi everyone. I will be applying to grad programs in fall 2010, and I have narrowed my list of programs to the ones in which I have definite interest. There's just one problem--half of them are Master's degree programs, and the other half are Ph.D. programs. I have no idea whether it is objectively preferable or useful to get a Master's degree in anthropology. My field is specifically social/medical anthro. While my undergraduate school did not have a formal concentration in that area, my fieldwork focused on the topics I plan to pursue for my graduate thesis. On the other hand, medical anthro is just beginning to have a burgeoning program presence at the MA level. Many of them are so new (i.e. Narrative Medicine at Columbia, or Medical Anthro at BU) that I'm totally at a loss as to how to judge their usefulness, either practically or on a resume. Are the theory and method provided in a MA program worth the money and time it takes to do that degree before the eventual and inevitable PhD? Any advice would be welcome and appreciated! The more the better!
  5. Hi knownothing! I am also a finalist (at-large) for a research grant to Nepal. What's your field and topic? Did you apply at-large or through a school? I'm so curious to know about the other applicants for Nepal! My proposal is in medical anthropology, to work with amchis/doctors in the Tibetan diaspora population in Boudhanath, Kathmandu, researching the Tibetan medical perspective on the clinical definition of death and end-of-life issues and technologies.
  6. Hi everyone! I'm a finalist for a full grant to Nepal. Congratulations to everyone who's made it through the first round. I have heard that final notifications go out by postal mail, as opposed to email...does anyone know if that's true?
