  1. No not yet. I have a friend that lives in Brooklyn that I might stay with but I am trying to find something closer to campus.
  2. I have decided to attend Columbia for their advanced standing program. Good luck to everyone in making their final decisions :-)
  3. @nymsw I am in the advanced standing program so we are required to start in August with a four week summer session. I will be completing my degree in 10 months. Sorry to cause you any stress. I will be attending Columbia and I am very excited. I couldn't make it to the Admitted Students Day but I watched online.
  4. @ft-grad2016 I understand where you're coming from but I also think it is important for programs to realize that the admissions office and financial aid staff are often the first face of the institution students come in contact with. I think social work is full of lessons but I don't believe my experience with admissions was a lesson in social work but only my experience in visiting. Like I said my visit with the field learning faculty was great. Pros and cons to the visit just like any other. Ultimately it's about the program but for me both programs are great. It could be the welcoming feeling that makes the difference.
  5. @BrendonSW The visit was good but I didn't get the 100% this is where I want to go feeling. The staff I met weren't the nicest especially the financial aid person. He was pretty rude and unfriendly. I then met with an admissions counselor who was very nice but not really a part of the social work program. The best part was sitting with a field placement staff who was very friendly and helpful. She made me confident that NYU offers great clinical internship placements, many of which that offer financial stipends. I am hoping to sit in on a class soon to get a better feel for the actual SW faculty. The area around NYU is beautiful and very vibrant but the actual social work building does not compare to Columbia. I really thought I'd be able to make a decision after today but I think I need to visit both a little more.
  6. Has anyone accepted the offer for advanced standing program? I visited today but I'm Still unsure.
  7. There are old threads concerning this topic but I figured I would start a new one. I am sooo stressed over this decision. Columbia is significantly more expensive and requires a statistics course as well as a summer session but I love the campus and of course the Columbia name. I have not yet visited NYU but it is cheaper and only requires Fall and Spring. I am doing advanced standing and will be going the clinical route. Any input would be greatly appreciated. It would be awesome if current students or past students could comment on their experience as well. If I go with Columbia I want an experience that will be worth the extra money. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
  8. I found mine in junk mail as well. I too received 14,000 with no work study. it looks like Columbia increased their tuition significantly from the rate last year that is listed on their website. This is really disappointing.
  9. @Victoria Lee @Michael St I am from CT as well. I went to Columbia's info. session and classes are two days a week (I believe Tuesday and Wednesdays) and then your internship will be three days a week. The advanced standing program also has a four week 5 days a week summer session beginning August 1st. I think weekend and night classes are only for two year or part time students. There is also the option of taking all your classes online. I am going to be moving to really get the NYC social work experience. Congrats to everyone, I am so glad we finally heard. What a great feeling.
  10. Just got the notification! I got in for the Advanced Standing program :-) I am sooooo relieved and happy.
  11. I just find it so frustrating that Columbia was my earliest deadline and the last one I am waiting to hear back from.
  12. @rlauren Thank you, I unfortunately am reaching my deadline for NYU and still waiting on Columbia. In the end I am leaning more towards NYU anyway but it will suck to lose the $300 if I decide Columbia. I swear this process has been so stressful.
  13. Hey everyone. My deadline to accept NYU is approaching and I am still waiting to hear back from Columbia. Does anyone know how the deposit works. If I put the deposit down for NYU, can I still change my mind and decide to go to Columbia?
  14. Does anyone know if once you put down the deposit you have to commit to the school or can you change your mind?
  15. @KmmAlaska No word yet. I am waiting on advanced standing as well.
  16. Congrats everyone! So exciting! When announcing acceptances, Could everyone post which program they were accepted to? Ex. 2 year, advanced standing, online...etc. This would be helpful to those who are still waiting.
  17. @aramirez My scholarship letter stated for the academic year but had no information on it being renewable. I am however an advanced standing student so I will only be attending for a year. I would call financial aid and see if it is per year for the whole time you are in the MSW program.
  18. I emailed admissions at Columbia and they stated they are aiming to get decisions out this month with the first being delivered by Feb. 15th! I am hoping this is true because I do not want to wait until March. Good Luck everyone :-)
  19. @Opt4theBest You are very welcome. I was very happy with what NYU gave me and it may make my decision as far as NYU vs. Columbia. The info. sessions at both NYU and Columbia were very open about the application process. They said more than anything they look at the personal statement essay. That is the first thing they read and they go from there.
  20. @Opt4theBest No, they stated that this is automatic with acceptance. FAFSA information does not play into it. It is based solely on the strength of your application. They give it a score and the score determines the scholarship amount. Columbia does this as well but there's is between $5-$12,000.
  21. Also for everyone waiting for the award letter...I attended the info. session for NYU and when you are accepted, they automatically give between $7-$15,000 depending on the strength of your application. They also stated you can appeal for more if you are unhappy with what they give you. Hope this helps :-)
  22. I was accepted into the NYU advanced standing program. I received my email this past Monday as well as scholarship info the next day. I'm still waiting to hear from Columbia before deciding but I'm very happy and excited about NYU. Good luck to everyone and congrats to those that were accepted.
  23. @BrendonSW My scholarship award letter was sent to me and includes $12,000 for the academic year :-)
  24. I applied on Jan. 8th but due to a delay in my teachers field evaluation my application was complete on the 15th. The decision letter did not include any financial aid awards but it stated a separate award letter would come. I will keep you all updated on that.
