PhD Applicants: Fall 2016

Question - how soon do decisions have to be made? Are they giving a deadline? Also, how soon have people found out about funding? Can they ensure the length of the program with funding? It'd be a shame to start and not get funding through the end. -

Congratulations @calilife and @PsychChick! That is awesome! Are you guys both accepting???? @AlphacentauriC - Congrats on the skype interview! I hope it goes well. I would take that as an awesome sign! Let us know when you hear more! I heard from OSU with "information" on a possible student position, but not an acceptance because I earlier withdrew. Waiting to hear from IU- Bloomington - my dream school! -

Good luck to all of you! I hope to hear your results! @calilife - What program at OSU did you apply to? I was THIS CLOSE to applying, but the awesome professor (Joseph Catania) and his wife (Peggy Dolcini) are doing more of their research in translation science, which is fascinating, but not quite the direction I'd like to take my studies! Have you visited? What do you think? My application is in the arms of Indiana University. From what I can gather on history, it looks like they announce sometime in Feb (late Feb I think) and announce funding in March. -
Man I wish I had the link handy, but I read some advise that stated to AVOID mental health disclosures in an SOP simply because your job will be researched, not to get counseled. They want someone who is mentally fit, not just pursuing because they've had issues. I would revise that first paragraph.

Excellent! That makes me feel MUCH better about Bloomington being a good fit. I hope I get in and I hope I can go see the campus and surrounding area before making that last acceptance. Crossing fingers!! Thank you all so much for your help!

Thank you so much for the great information! I'm just worried about the snow and cold weather more than anything! It looks like there is a lot of nature around which is very appealing. I'm looking forward to a slower pace of life away from the bay area which is traffic most of the day/night and overall jam packed. Are there vegetarian options at grocery stores? Like Morningstar Farms or tofu?

I believe that means what it is you're planning on doing professionally, not your back story and how great you are. I HIGHLY recommend contacting the department for clarification; they'll know best! Usually there is someone administratively who can assist you further. I've had TREMENDOUS help at all the University's of interest for me. ALSO - take a look at that Columbia link above; fantastic info!!

My most desired University gave me the same recommendation to really showcase what I want to research in my SoP. Question: I want to research new ideas of my own but also assist on all of their amazing research coming up. How many "new ideas" for my dissertation and research in general is a good number with elaboration? I have LIMITED space (most of us I think do), and want to really show them that I have a depth of interests, but don't want to skimp on the main ones. Another question: How can I say that I have a strong desire to work with one faculty member when there are quite a few in the department who would also be amazing? Everything in my application is done except for this SoP which is causing major anxiety because it's really (been told from this University twice now) that it's make or break with this SoP since everything else looks good. Gah!!! Good luck everyone!

Hi Pali, I don't know anything about engineering as this is a PhD in Public Health, but highly recommend searching on these boards or posting a thread! -

Although I haven't been accepted yet (for 2016), I'm curious to know what your experiences in Iowa are like so far! What was the fall like, and now, snow? I'm in CA where we don't ever get snow (where I'm at). -
I'm in the same boat! I submitted transcripts and am trying to make a December 1st deadline (1st of two...top school that I want) but I'm worried things aren't going to work out as well as I hope.

The good news: GRE scores officially in - received a 5.5 Analytical Writing (Yesssss!) The bad news: Getting a clearer picture of how a LACK of research will hurt me. Chances are slim but still very hopeful! -

Hello all! I have a MPH and did not get any sort of funding/scholarships/etc. I was also working full time and made enough to pay each month towards my degree. Now...totally different situation. I'm a FT teacher and PT community college lecturer. We don't get health insurance, so my income looks slightly inflated (and a large chunk goes to the teacher's pension). When I begin my program, I will not be teaching and will have no income! However, the FAFSA that I will fill out will have to do with 2015's taxes (in which I will have made more money), and even the year after the 2016 year (in which half the year I'll have been teaching). How can someone like me qualify for financial aid if they base it on PAST, no longer relevant income? Help!
