  1. Hi All! My ideal school's due date was Jan. 15th. SOPHAS delayed things so they didn't get my app until Feb 8th. I was told that I would hear back last week or early this week. Of course I'm really impatient, and am worried that I didn't get in seeing that 3 other people have gotten in already and been notified. This is my first attempt at grad school, and am wondering if sometimes a later notification can be a good or bad thing?
  2. I've been told that funding is yearly, but worry that I would start a program with funding and lose it halfway through my program. Also, let's say I start a program with two years of a GA position (and my out-of-state status changes to in-state tuition). When the GAship goes away (or if), does that mean I'd have to rever to out-of-state tuition? Thank you!
  3. @PHN2016 - Choose the one that makes the most sense! If finances are tricky, it may be helpful to look at the financial picture for yourself. Where do you WANT and really feel you'll SUCCEED? I have two schools I'm debating between (if I get into both), but one definitely is stronger in my gut for the right decision for me. Funding does make a HUGE difference though!
  4. Pride is fun! I went and performed maaaaaaaaaany years ago! I was cheerleading with the adult cheerleading groups in Pride! Enjoy the city! So much to do! Oh yes, have been bugging them like crazy! Any day now!! Has your friend looked on Craiglist?
  5. @tninaud Thank you so so much! If I get in, I'll make a visit for sure!
  6. @tninaud Sorry to interrupt your forum, but I saw that you're from the Bloomington area. Can you tell me about it? What are winters like? How do people get along? Is it pretty?
  7. @Phiner. DeterminationThis is so helpful! I am anxiously awaiting to see if I even got in yet! AHH! It's nervewracking! I would move in the Summer - most likely mid to late summer. Hopefully buy a house or condo and begin the adventure of a lifetime! SF visit! Have you ever been before? I'm about 40 or so miles away, but since this is a HUGE metro area, one area blends into the next. What are your plans while you're here?
  8. @Phiner. Determination I am cold in 50degree weather! Ahhh, it would be a huge chsnge, but I do hear the area is nice and super affordable! Right now my tiny 1950s house, 1000sq 3b1ba house is worth about 600k-700k which is insane and disgusting. I am hoping to find a similar house in Bloomington for much much cheaper! If you could describe bloomington, what would you say it is like?
  9. @Chalice_As Congratulations on Emory! Getting acceptances are great, but I agree about those generic rejections. I haven't heard yet, but I'm nervous! Gah! Let us know what else you hear!
  10. @HJin @TonyaB @Jade355 I think all sides have made strong points. That said, let's just understand that this is a very stressful time for everyone on all sides of the application spectrum! We all want desperately to get into our most desired programs! We're all in public health and may run into each other at conferences and workshops in the future. Is it too sappy to say "can't we all just get along"? Yeah? Too much? You all have wonderful things to contribute to the world of public health, hence why we're all applying and hoping to study, research, and add to the field!
  11. Gah! I'm not the person I thought I was! I thought the wait would truly be A-ok! NOT! I am obsessively checking to see if I got into IU. They have the best resources for sexual health and sexuality in public health and I just can't seem to relax...a few more weeks of waiting I'm sure! Going to Hawaii next week so I BETTER relax and enjoy it instead of obsessively worry. How is everyone else doing? Don't be coy or polite- be honest: what's scarier - not getting in or getting in a changing everything about life? I will be leaving my 10-year career and selling my house in the SF bay area (bought during the recession - will never find a similar house for the same price ever again). *SIGH*. I want this but I'm scared.
  12. My goal would be to buy a place once I get there! When did you visit? How are the winters? I keep seeing cold and snow...so scared for that! Ahh!
  13. Sometimes I think they're too busy throwing a show out there than to take your time and write a really good script!
  14. @PattiJeane Fuller house = terrible. Had some good points, but Stephanie had an English accent, then snapped out of it. Weirddd!
  15. Not a really great way of letting you know, I agree! I'm so sorry!! Also, thank you @Phiner. Determination!!!!
  16. @Euler - I concur! Silence is the WORST! I'd much rather hear a no!
  17. Other people have heard from my dream school, but I have not. Come on school! Let me know!!! (SAY YES!)
  18. @PhDhopefulPublicHealth - Who is your adviser or POI?
  19. Not yet! That's so exciting, congratulations!
  20. Visited OSU's school of Public Health. REALLY enjoyed my visit with POI's, students, and the director of the Student Health Services.
  21. I went through that EXACT same thing!!! Here's what you need to do: Contact the university, specifically the people in charge of graduate admissions. They will see you app and help you with completion. Here's the thing - to finish verifying takes a few more weeks. You should be ok if they received it in their system before the due date, but you're going to be reviewed late if they have rolling admissions. The university will help you the most.
  22. Ah, that seems really promising! I am in the same position - am visiting a University but haven't a clue if that means I'm accepted or not. I'm sorry I can't answer, but that sounds pretty great! Post your result!
  23. Background: 33 years old, been a health teacher 10 years (hs and college), and applying for PhD in Public Health (I have a MPH) I'm visiting Oregon State this weekend with meetings on Monday. Weird situation: I talked with two POI at OSU and they were both VERY helpful. I was worried that their research interests weren't fully matching mine, so I withdrew my app. Both were so lovely, that one of the POI reached out to me asking why I withdrew and had a GA position that he thought I'd be good for (which turns out to be something I am interested in). I haven't been accepted, but after emailing back and forth, decided it was worth pursuing and scheduled a visit. Monday I meet him and the other POI at the University. He linked me to two other students in the department and also a gentleman who hires at the Student Health Services office. This is my second campus visit, the previous one was a lot more relaxed as my fellow classmate in my MPH program lead it since he's a professor. Questions: 1. What are some good questions to ask that I may forget to ask? (I'm making a comprehensive list) 2. I'm bringing my CV on paper. What other documentation should I bring? (No research, so nothing to show there unfortunately). 3. Anyone else been in a similar situation with visiting without formal acceptance? Some people say it's a good sign that I'll get in, while others say this has no bearing on me getting in. 4. Any tips at all? I was thinking about dressing in a dark denim dress pant, sweater, scarf, and nice jacket (it'll be rainy possibly). Is this too casual? It's Oregon, so I'm not super sure. Any help appreciated! THANK YOU!
