  1. I am so jealous of those of you that are making/have made the decision. I didn't realize how many variables and how stressful this process would be on this side of it. I knew the applying and waiting would be rough, but always figured the decision would be easier. I almost wish I was currently in school so I would be preoccupied and not have to think about this so much. Question: Has anyone heard from multiple professors from schools they were accepted to? How have you engaged in conversation without giving a firm accept to them? Have multiple schools had people reach out to you? I am struggling to not get overly excited about their work and my interests when I am not ready to commit to a school yet. (sorry for the ramble, I hope this makes some sense)
  2. Haha @Cedodge I will also be easy to spot: blue hair, tattoos. We probably saw each other in passing this year! @ThesisTerror724 and anyone else, definitely would like to meet up, regardless of where everyone ends up!
  3. I'll be at ASC, just submitted my abstract/and a panel today! Feel free to PM if you do want to meet up for drinks or something! PS congrats @altikr25 on the decision. UC great program! @phdincrim2016 I know you'll end up somewhere great.
  4. @KnowVac @Kylie_ typically (from those I know who have gone through this process in the last few years) this is even better than wait list, it means you are top of the "wait list" but just under the flat accepted. Your chances are much higher of being accepted with this wording!
  5. I agree with @phdincrim2016 for every place I have heard I emailed a thank you for the consideration and acceptance and that I look forward to xyz. I will keep them informed on my decision. I think it shows you're respectful and care about the time and thought they put into the decision. Especially wait listed, @knowvac it could make the difference in being immediately off the wait list or not. congrats on the news!!'
  6. I was kidding, making a joke to bring some lightness to the stress.
  7. Want me to call NYU? I mean I didn't apply there but I would be willing to call and see anyways.
  8. I see your undergrad was in Crim, did you apply to any crim programs or only Soc?
  9. I don't think it is being sensitive to be offended when my differing opinion (again, I believe I responded initial with complete respect for your opinion on the funding issue) is compared to sex slaves and sex trafficking. Personally, I don't find my reaction to be overly sensitive, I am fairly sure anyone who has a monetary discussion referred to in such blunt, horrible terms as people who are tragically in sex work to LIVE, would react the same way I did. But I am glad you could delete your comments and make it out like I am the overly sensitive one.
  10. And on that super condescending, offensive note, I'm gonna peace out for a bit. Just FYI you don't know everyone's circumstances. And assuming and cutting down a valid, polite response is pretty disheartening to a group that has been nothing but respectful and kind to each other. @brokenwindow thank you for editing out the overly offensive part. I appreciate that.
  11. I agree and disagree. I totally understand where this philosophy comes from and have heard it again and again. But I also think everyone has different life factors to consider and just because a program doesn't fund you doesn't mean they won't in the future and also doesn't mean it isn't the best fit for you. Plus outside research grants and tuition waiver can make up the difference in some instances. But I agree going in debt is dumb. Just saying that everyone has different circumstances and what works for one person, may not work for another. And for full clarity on my own situation: I have definitely NOT ruled out the places I have been guarenteed funding.
  12. I'm so jealous of your USF funding! I'm holding out hope that I am either wait listed for the funding or have some other opportunity, since my letter said pending funding. if you decide to turn them down, let me (us) know. either way, great schools! I'm excited for you to hear from everywhere!! @ThesisTerror724 guess we didn't apply to any of the same schools! Congrats on such prestigious programs and all your acceptances/funding/interviews! You surely will have a tough choice to make! @Partinrn messaging you.
  13. Oh yeah, I'm thankful for options! Wow three undergrads! It took me close to seven years for one! Ha. I have heard that too, my masters was fully funded so I totally agree the weight off for not having to pay is huge. That being said, I love FSU and I feel optimistic I could get funded next year. But it's a gamble. Just like UCF is a slight gamble, being a new program. Anyone who gets FSU funding, if you want to turn it down.....;) kidding. Who knew decisions would be so hard? @ThesisTerror724 where have you heard from again?
  14. Well @ThesisTerror724 I applied to 9 programs (8 Crim/CJ and 1 soc). I have heard from 5/9, of those 5 I have been accepted to all of them with funding/fellowships from 2, 1 pending funding and the other two no funding. I won't be making my decision until I hear from the other 4. (Pretty sure I'm a Harvard reject though, LOL). I'm not ruling out FSU yet, but funding is obviously a big deal. Applied to: FSU, USF, UF, UCF, George Mason, Georgia State University, UTexas Dallas, USC (South Carolina) and Harvard.
  15. From how I understand it, 70% of the class ends up getting funding. With 25% of them upfront-so 45% will get funded later on. (If my math is right?)
  16. @Partinrn (and any other FSU peeps) the committee met Friday about funding, not sure if word has gone out yet via email or what but I was not funded. It sounds like a small percentage were (as per usual according to past years) but close to 70% receive funding during their first year and going forward. I'm now debating if I can afford to wait to hope for funding or if I want to go somewhere that had upfront offered me funding/fellowship. FSU funding is primarily based on GRE. Hope this helps! Happy Monday!
  17. Yes, I recieved the official acceptance letter and also had no funding. However, I emailed and asked they have not yet awarded research assistant funding-only scholarship funding (TA) so there is still a chance to get fully funded. He said we should know in the next few weeks!
  18. Congrats to you! I wish I had news from all of mine....but I applied to 9 which I am now realizing was probably way to many. I am confident in one rejection that should be coming my way but the other three no idea! Out of your choices, do you know what you think you are going to go with? (you don't have to answer if you are not ready!) Either way, congrats and perhaps we will end up at FSU together......if we choose to reveal ourselves.
  19. @phdincrim2016 I don't mind sharing, it's UT Dallas. But I have a few other silent apps too, but they have not told me I would hear like UTD had.
  20. Thanks! I just did and already heard back! The committee is not meeting until the 17th of Feb, due to a small amount of apps. Whew, glad it wasn't just that I screwed up!
  21. At what point would you all think it is appropriate to email the grad coordinator and ask about the timeline for hearing back? I have a school that emailed me in December saying I was in the first round of applicants for the committee to review in mid January and that I would hear shortly after that. It is now almost a week into Feb. Do you think I could email at this point just politely requesting an update?
  22. I am probably a bad person to ask/answer this because I only applied to Harvard for Soc. All of my other applications are to Criminology/Criminal Justice programs as that is my background and main focus. I applied to Harvard because a faculty member told me to when I was at a conference and we chatted because our work (really his, I am no where NEAR as established!) is quite in line with one another and he thought I would be a good unique fit into the program. That being said, I do not have high hopes of getting accepted because I have very very little sociological background. I have been accepted to 5 Criminology/CJ programs so I am thrilled enough as it is! In general though, I was looking for fit, funding opportunities, and expansion of my own thought and knowledge. I really want to end up somewhere that challenges me a lot and forces me to look outside my own narrow mind. I am fairly sure that all programs do this to some extent!
  23. I agree with @ThesisTerror724 I focused mainly on my research interests and the projects I am currently working on. It felt more like a placement interview than will I get into the program interview. I also spent time asking faculty what they were working on and where they wanted the program to be heading. Finally, I asked about their mentorship philosophies because this is important to me. I think the bulk of the time though was talking about myself and what I have done/am doing/want to do. Good luck! I am sure you will be great!
