  1. Any info on those Harvard acceptances? I feel pretty darn confident I will be rejected, but I would love to know either way! Congrats to everyone who has acceptances thus far! I enjoy my lurking here.
  2. Thanks! Last question, did they ask to call you as well? I thought that addition was different than my other acceptances. Again, congrats, I am sure it was well deserved and considered!
  3. Welcome and congrats to you! Bummer, my email just said that funding decisions have not been made yet (USF) and asked for a phone number to call me at. Guessing I was not funded. Oh well, luckily I have other funded offers.
  4. To whoever on the results board that was accepted with a GA position to USF, did your acceptance email say the info about the GA/funding? Congrats to you and thanks for the info in advance!
  5. From what I understand it is the committees decision but faculty definitely have influence even if they are not on the committee. I wouldn't be shocked if yours "endorsed" you and therefore gives you a slight edge over someone like myself who has no contact at FSU. I know FSU only funds a small portion of the students but that opportunities for funding in years 2-4 can happen after you prove yourself. I think the fact that you have contact with a known advocate of his students will only help you!
  6. Partinrn, bummer! Sorry to hear this. Thanks for the update though, I looked and I was accepted. Just a note: my acceptance sounded like a reject in the first paragraph, but then turned into an acceptance. Glad you have the interview, FSU!!!!!, and IUP. I hope we hear soon about FSU funding.....I'm not super optimistic for myself but it sounds like you have someone fighting for you!
  7. Never would have thought you're moron! I'm so sorry, that sucks. I hope you hear from other schools. Or ask (if you are at all interested in the program they suggested) if they will waive the deadline and transfer your application? Just a thought. Either way, you are fantastic and will no doubt go far!
  8. Partinrn, if it helps this was not only my experience but my sisters as well. She went through this last year. If you want to know what schools and such PM me! Also I hate flying, so I'm no help there. Fingers crossed for you!! But I am sure you will be GREAT.
  9. Yes. Typically it means they accept you but want to be sure you aren't crazy. this usually means they are figuring out who to put you with research wise and funding! It's a good sign! Congrats!!!! *sorry just realized I didn't fully answer your question! It's not what is considered a formal interview but definitely be prepared to speak to faculty about your research and interests, interact with current students, etc.
  10. Anxious about USF. I'm surprised that a few apps of mine that I haven't heard on HAD emailed me that they met mid Jan.....maybe means rejection or wait list.
  11. Congrats on all your acceptances @zephiwho ! Your record sounds impeccable. I agree that it is best to not stress over something out of our control, but I do think this thread is valuable to this year and, of course, future years. I don't think discussing stresses/concerns/acceptances and excitement is bad. The thread has been nothing but uplifting, positive and friendly. No one is cutting anyone else down and there is no appearance of hard feelings when rejections or no responses are given from schools and others hear good news. I think as this season continues the thread will be what past years is for us, informative. I think continuing to share information of all sorts here is great! I, for one, would be disappointed if this thread lost its candidness and became a thread only focused on possibly helping next year and only directing information in that way. Perhaps a new forum thread for that specific target? Either way, I'm glad you've chimed in!! It's nice to hear a new persons perspective and to hear your good news!
  12. Kylie_ First off, thanks for the info about GM it is a relief to know that all of us are in the same boat. I did send them an email asking about more information, if I hear I will be sure to post here. PSU (I am assuming you mean Penn State?), while I did not apply, I know they have notified Soc people about interviews and the person I know currently in their crime program found out late February with an "Skype interview". I say this because they were notified of an interview but the interview was just an informative Skype with acceptance and detailing funding. Fingers crossed for you!
  13. Thank for the info @crimqueen !! One of the main reasons I applied to USF is because they made it clear they like working with other departments/faculty. Now just fingers crossed! How did you like doing your masters there?
  14. Welcome @1428 elm street @phdincrim2016 I believe has heard from Rutgers....may be more help! Good luck!
  15. Also, I am sure I am freaking out for no reason, but I just checked my GM portal and the status went from decision made back to complete? I have the email letter of acceptance but I was wondering if any of you others that received acceptance did this? Or have you heard anymore from them? Thanks!
  16. That's good to hear! How did you hear this? Glad I won't have to stress about it too much longer!
  17. Also important to remember, while a GRE score may be "only" 18th/35th percent (or whatever) that this is a test taken by people who are intelligent. People who KNOW they want to continue to further their education. In other words a very small percentage of people. "Even" just scoring in the 18th percentile means you are 18% above other people who are just as motivated, driven and smart. One could argue 18% is pretty damn good when we are talking about "the best of the best".
  18. Congrats on the two! I don't know, Mason did say they were doing their apps in waves. I applied way back in October to GM and heard back last week but I think they will do other waves of review. Fingers crossed for you on Cincinnati, great program. I also want to do corrections but with a spin of life course/social disorg. I am sure you will be ok!
  19. I am also waiting to hear from USF (apparently I like Florida) and my good friend from my Masters program is waiting for Umass Lowell. I definitely think it is nice to already know about acceptance and funding from other places, but I also am waiting to hear from FSU about funding before deciding. I do think that no matter where I end up they are all good options. @phdincrim2016 where all have you heard from again? I know you were waiting on some still....I can't keep it all straight! : )
  20. Thanks for the response, Partinrn! This is where I am struggling because while I LOVE research, I ultimately want to end up at a R2 type place. I want more of an equal balance of research and teach responsibilities, so I generally like a little more nurturing environment (for lack of a better word). On the other hand, I like that FSU would really challenge me and push me to do better which would in the end effect both my research and teaching. And then funding, I have received funding from everywhere I have been accepted except FSU. (Side note: emailed a coordinator funding decision should be emailed within the next two weeks or so). And as I am not independently wealthy, I need some sort of funding. Partinrn, biosocial right? At least if we both end up at FSU, no competition for what we are interested in! Definitely think you would have a lot of great opportunities for that there. What a stress. I think I am going to have to visit the top contenders for me before I decide.
  21. @2016Applicant think your answer gives you an answer! Most people going to criminology/CJ programs do not think of it as a subset of sociology, but as its own thing. While Crim is rooted in Soc, to me it is a completely different area, and not just a subtopic or focus. I think that if you are feeling as though it's not strong enough to stand on its own, that going to sociology route is probably suited better for you, with a focus in Crim areas. and don't forget that just because your degree ends up in Soc or Crim, doesn't mean you can't do research in another topic or area! Also, how do you know a top 5 is doable for Crim but not Soc? (not meant to sound douchey, we all know how interconnected these areas are, just saying how you stated seems clear that Sociology is your primary passion! And sorry the above sounds self-contradictory, I hope you understand what I am trying to say) Thanks for the input on consideration of program. I definitely think future job market matters, I'm just weighing whether a top prestige program is more important than a potentially up and coming program! Lots to think about.......
  22. For me, the pros cons are that crim is more where I am interested/passionate and what my background is in. I did apply to one soc program but the more I think about it the more I don't think I will accept even if I get in (which is HIGHLY unlikely that I will). I honestly don't know that much about sociology in general other than that is where Crim originated/similar philosophies- but I have only ever taken one sociology class in both an undergrad and masters. I guess my advice would be to go with which one is more your passion, as the overlap will happen regardless. And I have no idea about soc rankings, so I can't really help with that. Sorry!! I hope this helped you a little, sorry it's scatter brained!
  23. Out of curiousity (and having no clue how I am going to decide!) do any of you have a plan for how you are going to choose your school? Are you going strictly on funding? Feel/fit? Ranking or prestige? Other influences? I would love to hear a little about this!
  24. Congrats to all the UCI people who were accepted on the results page!!!!
  25. By the way, @nerdyjilly you are NOT old, and you sound like you have a lot of other pros going for you, if you aren't confident in your GRE. Honestly, your GRE doesn't sound that horrible! I think experience is important and makes up for any cracks in GRE. How awesome! Pastry chef to Crim PhD applicant? What a cool life, I bet your daughter gets some great desserts while listening to nerdy academic talk.
