Has anyone gotten news from Stanford? I have friends who've applied there in STEM fields too and none of us have heard anything yet!

The committee met yesterday and first-round offers have been made I think.

Someone posted in the results section that they received an interview request from Princeton on January 10th, which is why I'm a little nervous! I applied to lots others... Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UT Austin, NYU, BU, and OSU. I'm playing the numbers game, since I've been out of academia for a few years; I think I have 13 total schools. Hoping somewhere wants me! Which school is your top choice?

Just swinging by to say that Princeton does not always interview applicants they intend to accept. So not getting an interview request doesn't mean you won't get good news later (they sent out acceptances in late Feb. last year). Good luck to you all!

  3. I second the above responses. This sort of situation is bound to come up, and no one should take it too personally. Thank them sincerely for their consideration, time, and/or advice as appropriate, don't apologise profusely, keep it professional.

(I have heard stories about certain ego-tripping professors who stayed bitter towards people who declined their offers and would subtly bully them in their conference talks years on, but they are *way* in the minority and aren't your fault/problem to worry about anyway. [And also none of the prime offenders I'm aware of are at places you're considering q: ])

Does anyone know anything about Princeton's timeline this year?

Based on last year, interview requests have probably gone out by now. But keep in mind that Princeton for whatever reason doesn't interview everyone they're interested in—I assumed I was rejected because I didn't get an interview, only to receive an offer two weeks later (end of Feb).

  5. Hey y'all, also happily ensconced in my program now after going through this last year. I mostly do Greek things, lit and philosophy especially. Let me know if anyone's got questions about the application process, etc.!

I'm also sitting on Penn's waitlist and I'm getting more and more nervous every day. If you get some news about it or if you get an actual spot from the waitlist could you perchance let me know? Penn is the only place I still would really like to go to so I can't wait to hear from them.

I declined a Penn offer (classical studies) the other day--hopefully the waitlist will move a bit!

Congratulations! That's fantastic although you had a tough decision even before today. Why aren't you doing the visit until then? Do you live abroad? Do you think you will winnow down your list to two or three before that week?

Thank you! I live abroad this year but have already been planning to fly back to the US for the Princeton/Harvard visits in late March–early April. So it would make the most sense to just tack Stanford onto the end of that trip. Still, it's definitely cutting it a little tight, and of course I was stressed enough already about making a decision ! But based on just the ones I've seen so far, Berkeley is the favorite.

WAIT... did we meet??? Were you at Penn Prospie weekend? I was the lone AAMW candidate with the blue dress haha

Ahh yes I totally remember you! I was the extremely jetlagged one :P I think we talked about the weirdness of Oxford and Cambridge?

I accepted my offer to IPCAA at UMich and am about to decline my offer at UPenn. I know IPCAA is the best choice for me... well, I'm about 90% sure. But, AAMW is such a great program and rejecting it makes me feel crazy! Aside from that, I really liked everyone there a lot. I want to send an email to the faculty who met with me, but I find I don't know what to say. I don't want to be too self-flagellating but I think they're aware of my other offer (at least one definitely is)  and might be understanding of my tough decision.

I've been putting off just finally doing this for way too long and I just want to be done with it, especially so I can free up a spot for someone on the waitlist.

Does anyone have advice for me on this very difficult email I have to send? How long should it be? How regretful? Individual emails or should I copy each faculty member I met on the same email?

Yeah ): I'm inching closer to declining Penn myself and am also having a tough time, since I loved the faculty and had a great visit in general. I think I'll email the DGS and then send a (separate) personal email to one of the professors who met with me during the visit (she also Skype interviewed me, put a lot of effort into recruiting me, and is the person I would have theoretically gone there ~for~). I think it's probably unnecessary to personally inform all the profs you met that you're declining the offer, unless they spent a lot of time with you or were personally involved in your admission.

Congrats to all of you this application cycle! Just throwing out a NB - if you are in the final selection phase, and know for sure you are not planning on attending a certain school, please let that school as soon as possible. Currently waitlisted at Columbia (CLST) and it is my top choice

Just declined Columbia CLST. Good luck!

  11. Waitlisted at Stanford. It was originally my first choice but I'm now leaning heavily toward Berkeley/Princeton/Harvard. Not sure yet. But it's good to finally be done with the wait.

Congrats/good luck to all of you!

Anyone want to claim the Princeton admit that went up today? If so, what is your area of interest?

That was me--I focus on Greek lit and philosophy, as well as reception studies.

Hey - I can claim the AHMA post. I received a super nice email from the AHMA chair. I do not think they are finished. For what is worth, they said I was unanimously chosen by the committee. So, I think they may have let me know a little early because of that, but they may still be deciding on others. Prospective students weekend at the start of March, funding will be determined after interviews conducted then.

Congrats on the acceptance! Could I ask what dates in March the prospective students thing takes place on? (Assuming it's the same for the classics side.) I heard from the graduate division the other day but haven't been contacted by the department yet.

  14. If it's helpful to anyone, I got into the Toronto MA and hold Canadian citizenship. Though in past years it looks like they've admitted Americans/internationals/MA applicants/PhD applicants all around the same time.

Where are you seeing that? I saw that someone got into Berkeley, but it didn't specify AHMA. I am wondering why there are not more notifications about Berkeley going up since they probably accept a relatively high number of students, and whether the person who interviewed with them and posted on this thread is the person who was accepted. Rather futile wonderings...

I posted the Berkeley admit (for classics, not AHMA), and I didn't get interviewed.

Just a general letter of admission from the graduate division at this point, nothing from the department yet.
