Social Psych programs from Rutgers and University of Washington-Seattle?
Rutgers social had their interview on the 19th!
-
Some benefits of Rutgers that are worth noting:
- Funding: FULL tuition remission with a generous stipend compared to other programs
- Research-oriented: the cognitive, like the other psych programs, are heavily-focused on research. Lots of faculty are funded by the NIH, NSF, etc.
- Interdisciplinary: opportunity to work with and in the Center for Cognitive Science, Interdisciplinary Studies in Perceptual Science, etcetc.
Reiterating what anxiousapplicant01 said, it is a good program and if you find good research fit, definitely apply.

Hi good friends! How is everyone doing? I feel like this thread has been a little slow! Are you guys still waiting on many schools?

Thanks for your help guys! I just wanted to let you both know (and anyone else who may have been following the conversation) that it turns out that there is an interview weekend for Tufts! Past results have not indicated an official interview weekend, but maybe there always has been? After an hour and a half Skype call, my SO was invited to the interview weekend, which is going to be Sunday/Monday 2/21-2/22 (heading to Boston two weekends in a row) and possibly back to back with NYU! This is going to be a busy, stressful, crazy month! Thanks again
Woohoo! Congrats to your SO! Boston is such a beautiful city!

@sjoh197 My programs generally only accept applications for starting in the Fall. So I have until December 1 to retake the GRE. My plan is to take it in April and then again in June, to reassess my competitiveness. You are totally right about shopping around! I am sure there are other programs (PhD or maybe masters?) that I am not aware of that may be a good fit/lead me to a PhD eventually. thanks for the encouragement!
If you haven't already, I highly recommend looking into Magoosh for GRE prep (lol not sponsored! It has just personally helped me a ton!!) Though it is all online, it is an incredibly interactive and useful resource! All materials are divided into videos (which you can watch at your own pace), all practice questions (I think they have enough questions for 11 full practice tests or something like that) are accompanied with a written explanation AND a video explanation, and on top of that, they have staff you can message to answer any additional questions about the material (say, if you still don't get a concept)!
Good luck and keep up the faith: "Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end."

Sure will! I see that you added a signature! Have you had your interview yet?
Haha, the signature makes me feel so Grad Cafe. And it is in Mid-February!

I would say it is pretty uncommon for schools to not hold interviews, but of course, there are always exceptions to the rules, and there are definitely a handful of schools that do not conduct in-person interviews. Surprisingly, there are even some schools that do not conduct any type of interview apparently. (Someone recently received an acceptance from UCSC without any kind of interview on Results Search.)
Out of all of the schools that my SO applied to, only 2 of them do not conduct in-person interviews. However, they both conduct Skype/phone interviews before extending an acceptance.
I know what you are saying about the wait! It is excruciating! I am hoping that after the in-person interviews, my SO hears fairly quickly thereafter (from looking at the Results page, it looks like after the interview, if the POI wants to accept him, he should hear back no more than two weeks after the interview, which is terrifying because they are coming up so soon!!) Also, he has this weird Skype "interview" coming up that wasn't called an interview, but is for one of the programs that does not conduct in-person interviews. The email basically just said that she wants to talk about the lab and the program, does that mean he won't be getting interviewed or....what does it mean?? So ambiguous! Anyways, since he received the email all we have been doing is overthinking what is going to happen on the Skype call, so I am happy to join the club!
Thanks so much for your input! Yeah, I saw the UCSC one as well and that's what sparked my inquiry! I also saw for UCLA that they didn't do interviews for a particular year (even with interview dates posted online) so I'm thinking... how do we know for sure??
And that's so exciting for your SO! Sounds like it is lowkey an interview, but maybe it's just an opportunity for your SO to ask questions about the lab and program! Please keep us posted

Does anyone know if some schools skip the interview? Is that super uncommon for our programs? This wait is killing me and I'm trying to pass the time by overthinking

WashU Cognition anyone?

hahaha thank you @psychgal2112! I am actually a Sociology major (will be graduating with a BA in May). The best feeling is waking up every day and using the knowledge I learned to make informed conclusions about why society works the way it does and why people do the things they do. In high school, I would always ask myself, "When am I going to use this?" In Sociology, I am always asking myself, "When am I not going to use this?"
Do you already have your Bachelor's or Master's? Or are you currently working?
That's wonderful-- even through the screen, I can feel your passion for sociology! As for me, I'm currently finishing up my BA in psychology (graduating in May).
Also, a relevant question for all the cog psych peeps: Are you also finishing up undergrad, applying with a masters, been working, etcetc? Is this your first go at applications?

Me too! Also, which program (clinical, social, etc)?
cognitive for me! how about you?

To the peeps who got interviews from UChicago, could you please send me your POI? Thanks very much and congrats on the interview!

@FeelTheBern I still think that it is super neat that you're on GC for your significant other! I'm curious-- what's your discipline? Cog psych as well?

From what I've seen, sometimes they tell you, sometimes they don't. When I was waitlisted at the school I was ultimately accepted to, they told me that I was waitlisted, and that they would be contacting around the department to see if anyone would be willing to take additional students.
12 hours ago, studentized said:It depends on the school, depth of their applicant pool, their resources, their competition. Ideally they'd tell you where you stand, but sometimes they have an incentive to hold back.
If you get into another school but are really interested in the one where you are waiting, you should contact them to see if the new information moves you off the list.
I'm curious-- what would be the incentive to hold back?
@Timemachines @Centre2012 @Austyn Still, waitlist is still better than a straight up rejection! Hope it works out for you guys
-
I haven't seen a thread about this so I thought I'd start one! I haven't received an email or anything, but how do you know that you've been waitlisted for a school? Do they tell you or do you usually have to contact them to find out?

Hi friends! Also, I didn't realize there was a separate cognitive psychology/neuropsych thread in the psychology folder so sorry if this is a little redundant! hahaha

He isn't really into TGC, but I think it fun to talk to other people who are going thru the process and feel as nervous as I do, even though my SO is the one that applied!
How many programs/what schools did you apply to??
First of all, super props to you for being an amazing SO!!! And definitely! This has been such a stressful and long process that it is so neat to go on hear and be able to talk to people who are going through the same things! I've applied to 10 cognitive psychology programs!
On 1/15/2016 at 10:51 AM, SAH said:Hi there! I've applied to 14 programs in cognitive or cog/cogneuro. I'm doing pretty alright now that I have a few interviews, something to prepare for instead of just sitting around having a meltdown
HI! Congrats on the interview!! How are you doing with preparing for it?
-
Random question but do you guys feel like the process has been a little slower for cog psych compared to other programs? I'm trying not to get discouraged by all the admissions decisions and the flood of interviews on the results pages for other programs!!! I've only heard back from 2 schools so far out of 10 (and they were both rejections MERP!)

Unfortunately, I think all of their invites have gone out.
I'm going to the UCSD weekend and a friend who goes to my school was invited to UCLA.
Best of luck with the rest of the application season!
Thanks for responding! And congrats on the interview! Do you mind me asking what programs you and your friend applied to? And did your application status on UCSD's website change? Mine still says under review (hanging on to that glimmer of hope hehe)
-
Does anyone know if the UCs will send out rejection letters? UC Berkeley sent out their invites on Dec. 21st and I didn't get one so I'm guessing I was rejected? I'm still waiting on UCLA and UCSD... their interview weekends are coming up soon so I'm getting a little nervous :/

Let's freak out about this whole process together!!!!
Has anyone heard from...

Oh wait, I'm not sure about the other campuses, but I know for sure that New Brunswick had theirs on that date! And no problem
