@Pink Fuzzy Bunny Super congrats! Also just....wow! @rhombusbombus I feel ya...for the first time in my life I've accumulated some furniture, and now have to get rid of it all! I'm a little reticent to use Craigslist as....well, sometimes bad things happen, especially in such a huge city like where I live. It would be neat if we had a grad cafe version of Craigslist; I'd be happy to give my gently used IKEA furniture to anyone on here.

Fingers crossed! Toes crossed!

Best of luck!!! If it's a good fit and things work out, perhaps we could go to the school's free yoga sessions together?

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
Cat_Robutt replied to YA_RLY's topic in Waiting it Out
I had been outside working on my car all morning to avoid email, gradcafe, and thinking about how waiting another week for my top choice to send notifications was torture. When I came inside to check my work email, there was one from the Dean of my top choice school titled "PhD." Heart RACING, I checked it: "Let us know when would be a good time to call." I immediately replied back something to the effect of "WHENEVER. NOW. PLZ." A few minutes later the phone rang and I'm surprised I didn't break down crying. My heart is still racing! -
@Neist wow....that's quite a bit to consider. It sounds like you have some solid plans made, however! Being that organized and resilient is sure to come in handy no matter what you ultimately end up doing.

@photon check out these answers; maybe they can help.

My advice would be to live off-campus, preferable not along Tennessee or Adams street close to campuses...there are many, many drunken, loud undergraduates and several accidental shootings have happened over the past few years. Pegasus Properties has some really nice apartment buildings a few miles away from campus; I lived there during grad school. There were several families there, and it was really safe. Tallahassee is not the most walkable town, so make sure you find somewhere your kids will have room to run around.

If you don't get in to Cornell, will you be able to be all right with the offers you do have?
-
Thanks! I will be in State College, at Penn State. My dad is actually from Lancaster; he was Amish...but I know next to nothing about the area and would love any and all tips and tricks, like how to dress, places to visit!

@Neist Will you contact them if you don't hear by the end of day today? @raaawr Crickets are full of protein...? Do you have something to look forward to over the weekend?

DO NOT ERASE THESE INSTRUCTIONS1) Click quote on the most recent acceptance list.2) Delete the quote messages at both the top and the bottom.3) Find the school of interest on the list. If it is missing, add it in alphabetical order.4) Write your name next to the school you were admitted.5) Click submit.6) Once you make your final decision, change the font of your name to green beside the school of your choice.Arizona State University: GradswagMichigan State Univesrity: kaoticfenNorthwestern University: cikkatikkaskwarrPenn State University (CAS): Gradswag Penn State University (Mass Comm): Cat_RobuttRutgers University: Gradswag University of California-Davis: Buckeye16 University of Connecticut: Gradswag University of Iowa: Buckeye16University of Michigan: cikkatikkaskwarr University of Missouri: ToastUniversity of Oklahoma: kaoticfen, gradswagUniversity of Oregon - Cat_RobuttUniversity of Pittsburgh - cikkatikkaskwarrUniversity of Texas-Austin: Gradswag, cikkatikkaskwarr, Toast University of Utah: Toast University of Wisconsin-Madison (Communication Arts): Buckeye16 -
I just got accepted into my top choice school!!!! I'm moving to Pennsylvania in the Fall! Thank you all for keeping me sane during this process. Finally, after several years of trying to get into a PhD program, I finally have.

@FoxAndChicken and @nightfarmer congratulations on your acceptances! Maybe your relief will rub off on the rest of us struggling with our anxiety here. How will you celebrate?! @hippyscientist that rejection seems...arbitrary? Especially since you do have graduate work. Sorry that happened to you, and hope you will be all right in the long run. @raaawr and @rosali getting your LoR team to review your SOPs is always a great idea! They can offer the kind of feedback as to what ad comms are looking for, since most faculty members serve on admissions committees from time to time. If there is any kind of career-building service nearby, like a place that looks over resumes, you may be able to have them review your SOP as well to check for grammatical correctness, organization, etc.

So true. That, or Peridot's from Steven Universe.

I just learned how to knit, and hoo boy has it helped.... I'm like halfway through my first-ever scarf. Really ugly scarf, but I'm the proud papa about it.

@The Interdisciplinarian and @flop in case you like reading dissertations, a professor I know did hers on the Real Housewives and feminist political economy of media, and it is pretty fantastic. You can read it (for free! yay!) here if you'd like.

@123letsgo I'm not sure how things work with Sociology, but in my field candidates have until April 15th to make a final decision, and that seems to be fairly standard across disciplines. If a program is pressuring you to accept, they need to chill out. For the program to which you've been accepted, some things to think about are: Have you visited? What is the overall vibe you received upon meeting faculty, staff, and current students? This is very important. What is the cost of living, rent, and the surrounding area like? What are retention and matriculation rates? Is there summer funding and insurance? Finally, how good is the fit? Is this a program you would be genuinely happy attending for the next 4-5 years? All of these are questions you should think about before making a decision; if your gut feeling and the evidence point toward this school, then making a decision now may be best. If, however, you would like to visit other schools so you won't suffer from buyer's remorse later on, that may be wise as well. Ultimately, it is up to you; just know that you do have time.
