BoJack Horseman is probably the most accurate depiction of Los Angeles out there, and a pretty good depiction of depression as well. Diva pups are the cutest! My parents have a spoiled rotten pug who runs the household

Now I have to ask if you watch BoJack Horseman because....Bo....Jack... They are such cuties, btw!

Fall 2016 PhD Acceptance Thread
Cat_Robutt replied to Cat_Robutt's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
I will get things started: DO NOT ERASE THESE INSTRUCTIONS1) Click quote on the most recent acceptance list.2) Delete the quote messages at both the top and the bottom.3) Find the school of interest on the list. If it is missing, add it in alphabetical order.4) Write your name next to the school you were admitted.5) Click submit.6) Once you make your final decision, change the font of your name to green beside the school of your choice.University of Oregon - Cat_Robutt -
Fall 2016 PhD Acceptance Thread

As suggested by @gradswag, and as modeled on the Student Doctor Network, here is where we can keep a running tally of where we have been admitted, and where we ultimately choose to go. The instructions for posting are as follows: DO NOT ERASE THESE INSTRUCTIONS1) Click quote on the most recent acceptance list.2) Delete the quote messages at both the top and the bottom.3) Find the school of interest on the list. If it is missing, add it in alphabetical order.4) Write your name next to the school you were admitted.5) Click submit.6) Once you make your final decision, change the font of your name to green beside the school of your choice.School - User Name -
Well, seems like today is Valenwine's Day, ya know...

Hey everyone––this is a bit tangential to the current conversation, but might be something we could do for each other: if comfortable, once we decide where to ultimately go, it would be interesting to keep a bit of a tally for others on this thread who are still deciding/waitlisted so we can better plan what will happen. This process can be opaque, especially for waitlisted prospectives and those with multiple offers, so if we can help each other out by providing information, we would probably find out much faster than waiting to hear from the adcomm of various programs. I'm already so stressed out by this shebang and it's only halfway through February! I don't know what I would do without the kindness of other grad cafe members.

What's the meaning behind your username?

I clearly love cats, as my avatar is a pic of my cat; and for some reason it highly amuses me when people pronounce "robot" like ro-butt, so a phonetic spelling was used here. -
@hippyscientist, @artsy16, @neuronerd8, sorry to hear about the rejections/waitlist positions, especially around Valentine's Day. Two things: February is halfway over, so decisions should be moving along a bit faster soon; and today and tomorrow sweet treats abound in about any store. Hopefully you all can take some time for self-care today and do something that makes you feel happy, comforted, and a little more at peace. *digital hug or unhug* Take care, and many warm wishes as we try and get through this.

@BooksCoffeeBeards I'm so sorry Is there anything we can do to help other than telling you that you're still awesome?

Weeeeeeeird and cool! I applied to PhD programs in either Media/Communication Studies or Gender/Women's studies. I haven't heard back yet (argh); have you?

@WendyWonderland beer duck sounds amazing! I'm in Los Angeles, applied to Penn State, Southern Illinois, University of Oregon, Indiana University Bloomington... Having a post-grad app party with lots of wine and chocolate sounds like it would be immensely helpful.

I'm waiting for my plane...for an in-person group interview. I'm nervous and excited and it's an overnight flight, and my nerves are all bundled and jumping. The next two days are going to be so intense, and I'm so worried about saying something stupid or having food stuck in my teeth or not knowing what to say next! This is my top choice school, and I've received some rejections, some waitlist notifications, so much is riding on this interview...anyone have tips for not having a panic attack? It's so ironic that I teach Public Speaking and Interpersonal communication and yet I can't seem to get my own act together.

Mint M&Ms.....my mind has just been blown! This is a thing that exists?! Also, @WendyWonderland I totally misread that as you putting chocolate into your Chinese food, and became scared and confused.

Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
Cat_Robutt replied to procedural memory's topic in Waiting it Out
@Nicole Gilbert and @seaweed sheets also a teacher here, not primary school but from a low achieving/low SES district in the South...without teachers like y'all I'm pretty sure I would not have made it to where I am today (if that helps at all ). The wait has been very stressful, although there are some ways of combating it––drinking plenty of water and tea can actually help, and not consuming too much caffeine. Learning a new hobby or picking up an old one such as knitting, playing an instrument, drawing, writing, playing with animals, gardening, cooking, etc.; even catching up on TV shows or movies. I've found doing something that takes both my mind and body, like cooking, works best as a distraction. And each day, I force myself to write down 5 good things that happened in my day, and 5 things for which I'm grateful. At the end of the day, it can be helpful to have a bit of positivity when I'm trying to sleep. -
@gingin6789 and @The Interdisciplinarian when we've settled into a routine, and/or those around us have settled into a routine, it can be difficult when that gets altered––all of a sudden, they may have to think about their own lives and futures, and what they are doing. My extended family, some of who are still Amish, think I'm the devil for wanting a PhD...I'm a woman in a man's job and it challenges, directly, their belief system. As such, decrying me for getting an education is much simpler than questioning their deep-seated values about how the world should operate. Those around us, even if they love us and we love them, may not be able to analyze why they don't want everything to change. It is stressful whenever these kinds of things occur, but it can also be helpful for you in the long run, as you may be able to either 1) have a conversation about what happened and try to work out the issue; or 2) realize the relationship may not be ready for change, and each party go about their lives. I really hope the former happens, and that the supportive parties outweigh the negative ones.

Congratulations!!! If you're not from around the area, PM me for neat Los Angeles/Pasadena/SoCally suggestions if you'd like You'll def need those sunglasses, though; it's been in the high 80s this week!

Isn't that the timeless classic of every generation? Also, @raaawr, due to my work schedule I spend much time at the apartment, and honestly it is incredibly hard to focus on my work. I pet my cat, have started watching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, drink lots and lots of water, and play Undertale or Portal if things get too hectic. At the end of every day, I force myself to write down 5 good things about my day and 5 things for which I'm grateful. It sounds trite, but it tamps my anxiety down enough to where I can go to sleep and it tends to get me out of the house so my list isn't just "Netflix" written over and over again. The hardest thing for me is trying to write during this whole ordeal. It seems like my research/reading/writing skills have disappeared in a vortex of self-doubt.

@SLPgradstudent I don't know!!! I wish we could throw a virtual party for all of us, whether we've been admitted, rejected, or are "patiently" waiting! There would be much digital confetti and emojis.
-
@pterosaur congrats!!!! Do you plan on having a little (or big) celebration? @SLPgradstudent I planned my wedding for the day after I graduated with my M.A. Was I not thinking clearly?! Definitely. But it was super worth it! Lots of etsy....
