    I think you have the science issues well thought out on both sides of the issue, but also think about where you want to live (not just CoL). ~5 years is a long time to spend in one place and as you said these places are polar opposites. NJ vs CA, small town vs huge city (think things to do), etc. The Bay Area has a ton of industry-specific opportunities, but the NJ area is no slouch either. Many pharma and biotech companies call North NJ/Philadelphia area home. Both are amazing institutions, and whichever you choose certainly won't hold you back in the long term.

    Larger amount of people. For a class size of 12 I wouldn't be surprised to see them accept ~18-20 people. Slightly depends on the program and historically what their acceptance:matriculation ratio is.

    Not sure I'd ever wear jeans to an interview, regardless of the formality, to be honest.

    I concur. I was talking to my PI about this the other week. He said internationals are tough sells to departments because of how expensive they are. At his last institution, PIs were on the hook for an international's stipend and part of their tuition (which was higher than a US citizens).

    Hey, firstly welcome and congratulations! I can't speak to the culture, but I have just a quick question. Is the bahavioral neuro program separate from the "regular" neuroscience program that goes through the Vollum Institute?

    Brotha it's still early, don't lose hope yet. Many schools haven't even begun to send out invites.

    Jan 12th wouldn't be the 2017 deadline anyways. S/He meant is this cycle due Dec 1 or Jan 12, with the answer being Dec 1 because that's how the US writes dates.

    Good advice, thanks! On a side note, does anyone else in this thread mentally sing Kokobanana's name to the tune of that Copacabana song every time? Or am I just going crazy waiting to hear back from schools?

    A lot of UK PhDs have already completed a MS before going onto the PhD. Think of the PhD as the years of research post-comps.

    I would suspect there's not that many, and if so there's little chance there's a list. Masters programs are generally two years. If you rotate the entire first year that doesn't leave much time to do research in whatever lab you end up in. It's going to take some time but you're going to have to basically go from school website to website to see what their MS program timeline is like.

    It's fairly common from what I've heard. A lot of schools want to limit "academic incest".

    From what I've seen most programs will pay for your hotel and flights within the States, but your flight from your country to the US won't be covered.

    Yup, just be straightforward and [very] polite. From my experience PIs are usually happy to send reagents. You can worry about shipping (although I usually include the lab's fedex account number and shipping info with the first email) and possibly MTAs after they respond.
