Dibenzofulvene reacted to atcg in No publications - any chance of admittance to top graduate Chemistry programs?
Of course you can get in. Most people don't put out publications as an undergrad. All that matters is: 1. Your GPA. 2. Your GRE scores. 3. The degree to which your research advisor will vouch for you. If you want to get into Harvard, Caltech, or MIT, all three of those things better be great. For the 2nd tier, being relatively good is good enough.
Lastly, you have a year left of school, so absolutely try to get something published in the next year, since it will look good on your CV for fellowship applications.

Dibenzofulvene got a reaction from OrgChemFan in Program Specific Thread - The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla
I'm pretty sure I'll be choosing Scripps La Jolla. Great campus and I got along well with my lab of interest. The only reason I would decline is if I was denied a spot in the lab.
The visit weekend was great, talked to a lot of faculty. I wish that Baran was a bit more involved in the weekend but I know he functions his lab differently.

I would advice agains generalizations. I'm at a top-10 and find the community incredibly supportive. There are a few professors who aren't the best, but overall it's not bad at all.
Overall, I think most top schools are generally great environments to do a PhD. However, most people at these places will have high ambitions and very high expectations on themselves. A good question to ask yourself is if you fit in with the people at these schools. If you do it can be a great experience, if you don't it might not be the best fit.

Both Chicago and UIUC were quite positive. However, at UIUC I felt that ALL the faculty were invested in getting to know me, even if I wasn't interested in their field of research.
Has anyone visited Scripps La Jolla?

Have you tried calling them L543? I saw that someone contacted them a week ago and was told they were waitlisted.
Also, someone told me last week that Wisc admits a couple people after the first visit weekend (which is this weekend), but I do not know the accuracy of that statement.
ETA at this point: I've gotten two rejections (Stanford, Yale) and haven't heard back from two schools (Wisconsin, Penn). Someone told me two months ago that Penn was on the fence with my application, so I'm assuming a waitlist at this point.

I applied to their biochem program and never heard back. I even emailed them over a month ago inquiring and never got anything back pretty bummed but I knew it was a reach

Hi all. Was admitted to UCSD last week and I'm ecstatic since I have terrible stats. To give you an idea...
Undergrad Institution: Top liberal arts college
Major(s): Chemistry
GPA in Major: ~3.1
Overall GPA: ~3.1
Position in Class: for chemistry majors, at the bottom
Type of Student: Female, low-income, US citizen but not a CA resident
GRE Scores (revised/old version):
Q: 153
V: 157
W: 4.0
Chemistry: 29th percentile
Research Experience: 3 labs: one for half a year (1 presentation); one for a summer REU (2 presentations); two years at currently lab for senior thesis. No publications.
I only applied to schools in California (I'm in the northeast and am tired of the cold winter months): UCLA, UCSB, USC, Berkeley, Stanford, and of course UCSD. I started this process telling myself that all I need is one acceptance so I'm satisfied and will most likely be attending UCSD

I'm glad to hear that others are still waiting to hear back from Irvine as well. My status changed to "being reviewed" last week so I am hoping that they are just taking their time looking through applications. Good luck, I hope you hear back good news from Irvine soon!

@KR_ChemIntern @Dibenzofulvene Still waiting on Madison three (different program, tho)!
They sent notifications on my program around these days during past years so I'm just so lost and stressed! Sending everyone strength to survive the weekend!

Yeah, I would fly out to all of the offers you have if you are at least considering them a little bit (and can spare the time). Never know what's gonna happen -- maybe the visit changes your mind and you really like it afterwards. I think it's important to talk to some current grad students all the POI's you are considering before making up your mind. If it's your last choice I obviously wouldn't bother.

I was accepted into all of these schools - I found out from Caltech Mid-Jan and I found out from Davis and CSU late January. Although my scores were pretty bad, I'm very proud of my personal statements. Good luck to the rest of you
