  1. Classes Tuesday and Thursday, TAing MWF. Just got my first syllabus and my TA assignment yesterday - definitely have some reading to do come August. I haven't even found an apartment yet and probably won't be able to move in anywhere until 9/1 - that's going to mean at least a week of hotel living. Whole situation has been kind of a mess so far, but I'm confident it'll work out in the end. Moving across the country is way more of a pain then I remember it being last time.
  2. I'm not even sure how often the cohort from the 2013 thread come around here anymore, but if you're like me you can't believe there is still ANOTHER month left until you get back into the stacks again. Between trying to find an apartment across the country, saving money, dealing with moving dilemmas, I'm just ready to begin the next phase of my career! I'm trying to enjoy the last free month for the next five years, but it hasn't been easy.

What are the pros and cons of living in Manayunk, cosidering I'll be attending Temple in the fall?

Park Ave is prob. the way to go
  5. Classes for the upcoming semester were JUST announced and I'll be taking the first section of the graduate US History survey, a required methods course and I'm not quite sure what else. Probably an Atlantic World seminar, but I think I need more information about my TAship before I can decide that. Might audit a language course as well so I can start getting that requirement out of the way. I've visited Philadelphia once so far, met with the DGS (who is great and, I was pleased to discover, is leading the intro US survey in the Fall) and a graduate student and explored a few neighborhoods. I'm just spending the summer trying to save as much as possible and find an apartment from 1000 miles away.
  6. how big are intro level history (or humanities in general) classes?
  7. Ha, yeah I'm pretty happy I like my school's colors cause a new t-shirt is def. in order

Monty's Krown has a lot of local punk shows too, if that's your thing. But as others said, the Bug Jar is the best for smaller local acts, with Water Street drawing the more mid-level touring bands.
  9. You made the right choice. Gotta be happy or your work will suffer, you know? And I'd rather be just outside DC that smack in the middle of Indianapolis.
  10. Yeah, I've been watching it, but no one has posted there in like a month so I figured I'd give this a shot instead
  11. Bump for 2013? looks like this is where i'll be
  12. well, the long national nightmare is over - i got a funding offer from Temple, so barring something unforeseen, that's where I'll be come August. glad to be finally over with this process...congratulations to all my fellow members of the 2013 cohort!
  13. glad i won't be the other person hangin around in this thread still undecided until then
  14. i'm still waiting to hear about funding so i can't even really begin all that life planning stuff yet
  15. glad someone jumped on this, well done one thing i'd love to know is whether people are getting this funding coming into the program with a BA or an MA, as i think that plays into funding offers a bit
  16. Yeah, I'd be interested in that too. Perhaps I'll start playing around with Google Docs today at work to get one started, would folks want to contribute?
  17. Yeah I thought that might have been the case too, but there's not a whole lot I can do about that. They're all established historians with good CVs. Anyway, I'm over it. Their loss, right?
  18. The whole idea of a safety school in this process is sort of silly, anyway
  19. Thanks everyone - I e-mailed my recommenders to tell them I heard from all my schools and mentioned the Davis thing and they seemed confused and stressed the positivity of their letters, so CageFree, you're probably right. As far as whether Temple is the place or not, that all depends on funding and the DGS there told me to wait until late April for word on that so I'll just be hanging around here until then I guess! Annieca, I'd say if you're contacting administration officials, a week is not too early at all. You're in and accepted (most likely) and it's not like you need to make an impression on this particular crowd anymore (i.e. the graduate school office workers), so e-mail them after a week!
  20. Aaaand I'm done with this phase of the process. Just got my rejection from U Maine - a little surprised, as my MA advisers all told me to consider it a safety school, but there are so many factors in the process that nothing should be a surprise (or everything). So, how about that funding news wait, eh?
  21. Just got my official rejection from UC Davis. After having come to grips with not getting in there, they took so long to reject me that I started to have hope again, so this feels a little worse than my last couple rejections. The letter listed my letters of recommendation as not being competitive enough, which was a bit of a shock as all my writers seemed enthusiastic about recommending me, AND the DGS and I had an email exchange where he complimented the quality of my app. So I don't really know what to think right now!
  22. This is great advice, and I wish someone had given it to me sooner in my career.
  23. I don't think so. I visited one particular archive many times when writing my MA thesis (certain records there were crucial to my work) but aggregate I bet it added up to less than the 48-60 hours you are budgeting for yourself, and I was very happy with the work I produced. I think given the fact that you are entering into the trip knowing about your time constraints, you won't have a problem. Doubly so if the archive allows you to photocopy/photograph documents.
  24. Joyce Appleby's Inheriting the Revolution is really great and pretty influential on my work on memory
