I agree but to be fair you compared it to a quarter life crisis. Usually when people say life crisis its referring to paralysis and stagnation. Maybe also self destructive behavior. While I'm sure its paralyzing and stressful to have a lot of good options it's clear why it might be seen as jarring by some to use that terminology for when your life is clearly moving forward in a pretty obvious general direction and things are going well but you're just stressed out. If I saw someone using that phrase I would assume they have few to no options or they do have options but don't really know what they're doing in life in a much deeper sense than "I don't know if I should go to Harvard or XYZ"

    Cannot agree more.

I applied to different programs, and I have an admission so far. It is just not in sociology. However, if I did not have anything, the worst condition would be to search jobs and not find anything because, with my degree, I do not think that I can find a job outside of my country.

good for you. I still have nothing XD

It definitely is. Where are you from? I feel like I am one of the neighboring countries to your country. I feel discriminated in sociology. I had seven years of RA experience, 5 in bachelor and 2 in master.

East Asia. I kind of feel that your master degree in the US will weigh a lot and receive more recognition.

By the by, what's your plan next if the worst situation happens?

  4. Same place.

An international student. BA from a very normal university in my home country. Two master degrees, one course-based and one research-based, in a "good" university I would say, but it is not in the US and western countries. (sociology ranked less than 50). I am working as RA after graduation. BA 3.62 and MA 3.65 for the GPA. TOEFL close to 110. GRE 158+164+3.5.

Lots of research experiences and strong quantitative analysis ability. I started doing research since BA. A couple of presentations at major conferences in sociology (ISA and ASA). Several work-in-progress manuscripts, one of which is my writing sample and it was submitted to one of the top journals in my field before the application. I received an R&R for it a few days ago. 3 or 4 letters from my teachers who all graduate from IVY schools.

Sure I am a good fit for some of the programs I have applied to. So what? Get rejected by 9 out of the 12 programs and no acceptance.

Cant be more down in my life and cant figure why. And now, I dont even bother thinking about it. Perhaps nationality counts?

Congrats to all the Toronto admits! I had also applied there, safe to assume I'm rejected.. and no other acceptances yet.

and despite all the pessimism brewing up inside me, I feel so warm when I read all these encouraging comments in this forum. Makes me all the more want to be part of the graduate community :(

Me too. Good things will come. Have faith!

Just received an automated e-mail from the UT Austin: Dear Mr. ....:
The University of Texas at Austin has made a decision on your application for graduate admission. Please visit your Application Status Check page (https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/adm/mystatus/) for details.

Have both admitted people received this? And have also the rejections come this way?

Do not receive anything. No status changed either.

Oh wait, now I see what you're on about. Your research proposal does not count as your writing sample... If you have the feedback from your profs on your papers then rewrite your paper with their suggestions in mind and submit it as your writing sample.

    thx,

i just have this concerns 'cos some schools in Canada accept  research proposal as writing sample.

just wonder what the situation is in US

    thx 4 for ur sugguestion

  8. Hi, guys

I am applying to phd program of cultural anthropology for 2017 fall.

I now have well-developed (at least I think well-developed) research proposal (used to apply other school in last application but did not make it) and some average term papers. Which one I should submit as writing sample? Any suggestion as normally research proposal seems not to be an options?

    LOL
