I'm not sure if I should submit a super specific research proposal or focus more on my experience and interests and how it relates to International Cooperation (which is what I have done s far). My undergrad was in an unrelated field (Media Studies), so I'm a bit lost if I have to go in-depth about thesis plans etc.

Have you tried emailing the department / graduate office and just ask?

  2. Thanks for your reply! Thats why I'm sending prof. B another message, but I'm hesitant about applying at Prof. A's school, him being the graduate director and all.

As for the reapplying, I kinda did what you suggested and I've already gotten a positive reply from that. Good to hear that you guys are suggesting to do the same thing!

  3. Is it a bad sign when a PoI doesn't reply to your emails? Last year I reached out to prof A but never recieved a reply. I recently emaild him again because he is also the director of the graduate school, and I had a question about the app proces. So far no reply.

And in late July I wrote to prof. B (different school), and haven't gotten a reply either. I'm thinking about sending him a new message because I reached out to him over the summer and maybe this was bad timing.

Does this mean they aren't interested, or am I making too big of a deal out of it?

@EvelynD Was that the entire message from A? I mean, they outright say they wouldn't be a good advisor since they don't know your topic. Maybe ask them to clarify the different roles advisors and mentors have within that program?

It does sound like Prof B is being polite. If you don't have any immediate plans to visit that university, I would probably respond by thanking them for letting you know, expressing sadness that they are leaving the program, and asking if it would be possible to remain in touch with them (if you want to).

    I'll send you a PM!

  5. I need some help understanding the meaning of two messages I got! I reached out to two people (well, a lot more, but these two lft me with questions) from different schools, and I don't understand their answers. Basically, I introduce myself and my project, and end the email by asking if my ideas fit with their own research specialties and the faculty in general.

Usually I get a clear yes or no, but today I got this:

Prof A: 'It sounds like prof. 1 and 2 you mention in your email already are good advisors, since I don't know about your topic. However, besides a committee you also need mentors'.

Prof B: 'Our ideas match, but I will be leaving this uni soon. However, if you have the cahnce to visit us we can talk about your ideas'.

What exactly do they mean, and how do I respond? Can I mention Prof A in my SoP as a mentor? I think Prof B is being polite, but since she is leaving I can't mention her. Urg,..you Americans and your meanings ;)

@GreenEyedTrombonist Sounds like you're kicking ass with your SoP.  I didn't finish my first draft until the first week of October!  Also, I wouldn't stress too much about cross-disciplinary letter writers.  My letter writers last cycle were a museum professional with an MA in Art History, an anthropologist, and two historians (one of whom has PhD in American Studies).

The overall impression that I get from you is that you really know what you are doing! Wouldn't want you as my competition! So I'm sure your SoP will be great.

I'm still in the business of hunting  looking for programs. I have 5 programs secured on my list (3 are second tries, and I'll have to contact mu Poi's again, but I'm thinking of taking Toronto off the list), and I'm waiting to hear back from 2 more. Just wanna make sure that I can be admitted directly to a PhD program with my MA degree. Haven't started on the SoP yet, I haven't got the piece of mind until I have found at least 8, but hopefully 10, good programs. Oh, and I'm super anxious my letter writers won't help me this year. Fun, fun, fun.

  7. Hi guys! I am prepping for the upcoming cycle and researching schools and programs. I want to obtain a PhD in animal studies and although I mainly look into anthropology programs, I think human (animal) geography (among others) would be a good fit too. Now, I've been looking into anthro programs for more than a year now but I don't know the field of geography very well. Would you guys have any recommendations for me? Of couse I am going to google the s**t out of search engines and jourmals, but maybe you could give me a head start!

@EvelynD I don't think the mixed methods approach is a bad thing. I'd listen to the advice from your other post and reach out to your POIs. Let them know that the thesis is from some time ago and ask if you can either do some edits before submitting it, submit a different writing sample, or also submit a more recent writing sample.

I'm trying to figure out my LoR situation now. :/

    What are you struggeling with?

@EvelynD Doing better than me! Writing is pretty much on the wall that I'm much more likely to get into a Comm program given my interests. x] Regarding the submittal of your thesis, I would reach out to friends to see if they'd be willing to edit a chapter or section for grammar. Does the content suck because of the findings, the quality of the methods, or something else? Some of these can probably be corrected for before submitting it with your app.

It sucks because,..well,..because of everything. It's a bit all over the place because I combined photo analysis, literature analysis and ethnography (or, as my co-supervisor called it '''something yóu call ethnographic research''). Then I compared all my results with a specific theory to see what new insights I could gain. It sounds ok, but it was only graded as an average good thesis. How am I going to compete with you guys, with your research experience (we don't go on research projects, can't TA, etc)? I just don't feel secure about it. I could correct the grammar to make my thesis less cringy, but is that even allowed?

  10. Pff, I'm down to 5 schools again,...One doesn't hire this year, and the others either want you to come in with a MA in anthropology (mine is in archaeology so I have to ask all faculties if this is a problem), and others have GRA requirements that I don't meet.

So tomorrow evening is going to be dedicated to finding programs all over again -_- Will this ever end? Why did I even choose such a dificult topic that I can't even find a proppoer amount of programs?

  11. One of the schools I'm applying at requires me to send a copy of my MA thesis with my app. The thing is that I don't like my thesis. I got a 7/10 for it, which means it's an ok thesis (but not superb). I wrote it about 2,5 years ago when my command of the English language was worse than it is now. I didn't get a lot of help from my advisor so this document does not represent the best of my abilities! Obviously I'm afraid the committee will read it and think this is the best I can do (when in fact it isn't)

Do you guys think I can send them an edited copy of my thesis? I don't mind if I can't change the content but I just have to change my English, reading it even makes me cringe  ;)

@EvelynDMe too! I applied to 5 last year and am currently looking at 11 this year (still need to contact a couple POIs). It does feel like if I don't get in this year I won't be able to apply again. I'm trying to ignore that and just work on my SoPs and whatnot. :/

I'm now down to 8, so I'm gonna try to find some more schools just to be sure.  I'm scared to contact my LoR's, because I think they might refuse to help me. Also, one schools requires me to send in an official copy of my thesis to the graduate department. The thing is, I think my master thesis sucks! I got a 7/10 for it, so its concidered ok, but my English sucks and the content itself does too. I'm not sure what to do,..

  13. Do all you second-timers feel super anxious too? Last year I was way more naive, applying was stressful but also a lot of fun. now I feel like, this is it,..if I don't get in this time my chances are over. I'm not even sure of my LoR's will help me, especially since I'm applying at 10 uni's this year (4 last year).

Hey guys, I’m reapplying for fall 2018 and refining my SOP as well. I earned my MA in Anthropology (Andean Bioarchaeology) amd graduate certificate in Latin American Studies. Right now I’m on track to finish my MPH in Infectious diseases and outbreak prevention.

Im mostly interested in warfare and violence (including ritual) during political transitions of major empires in Andean Peru.

So far, I have about 6 or 7 schools I plan to apply to which is better than my 2 last year lol.

Huh, I thought you got in last year :/ Good luck then!

    You raise some interesting points!

I think I might have become too invested in my horse project, now you mention it. At first I had 2 different projects to choose from but I dropped one because I didn't have the time to develop them both. I'm now super attached to this idea and I don't want to change to something else. Maybe I should be more flexible about this.

It might sound as a coincidence but the last couple of weeks I have came across schools that have interesting different program like senvironmental studies, ethnozoology, and animal geography. I will rework my idea's to be able to apply there too and spread my chances like that.
You asked if I wanted a career in anthropology if it is not focused on human-horse relations.  Yes, but like I said, I am so attached to my idea that choosing something else over my own stuff (like the European position) sounds scary. (I'm saying this and I haven't even applied yet, let alone recieved an offer).

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!

So, I think it's important to also consider your post-PhD plans when deciding on which subfield/topic to follow. In my opinion, passion for the topic is important, but so is employability and interest from others (to get grants for example). My personal concerns about entering a topic with very limited interests (even if it was what I wanted to do the most) was that 1) I will likely have to change it after the PhD if I want to have more work opportunities and 2) if I become too specialized in an unpopular field, then that might make finding future work difficult. So, my approach was to be passionate about the methods and the idea of the science, but never actually become too invested in any particular topic. Kind of like a "science mercenary", I wanted to develop a set of skills that I could use to solve whatever science problem comes up. So far that has worked well for me but this is a personal choice of course. Not saying that this is what you should also do, but just providing a perspective to also consider.

    Good luck!! :)

If anyone, particularly biological anthropology (bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology are best) applicants, needs someone to read their SOP and resume/CV, please let me know. I can try and help out as much as I can. The reason I'd say bioarch and forensic anth would be best for me to read is because those are my specialties and I think I could give better advice on those. But I can do any other SOP that needs to be read too. And CVs/resumes can really be read by anyone and are really dependent on the person writing them.

Would you mind taking a look at my CV? I'm in socio-cultural anthro, but that won't mind for feedback on a CV, right?
