  1. Thanks! I've actually just found a couple of very nice roommates, so I'll be renting a room for the first year! Have you found a place for thw two of you by now?

Thanks! I can't believe I went from 5 rejections to 2,5 acceptances! (ok, and 6,5 rejections, but whatever ). Declining the other offer was so hard, my PoI was just great. This was the biggest luxury problem I've ever had. By the way, today there was this item on the news (here, in the Netherlands!) about an American kid who applied at 20 schools and got admitted into all of them. I literally cried when I saw the video they made of his first acceptance.

Thank you! I chose the Cultural Anthro program at Washington State University. I ended up having one other acceptance and one position on a waitlist.

  5. See if there are Facebook groups about local housing. I found my place (a private room in a shared house) through one of thise 'housing in XX' groups. I talked to my roommates on FB, then we skyped, and then we made the decision about when I could move in. I also contacted some local housing agencies that some of the other grad students in my department rent from, and the department also has a mailing list for rad student housing.
  6. Congratulations! I have been scouting Craigslist and FB for a couple of weeks now, but no luck yet. You dont happen to be looking for a very cool Dutch roomate, by aby chance? Because I've got one of those available

Moving Abroad - What To Take With You

Excellent topic, I have been thinking about this ever since I got my acceptance letter. I'm moving from Europe to the US and thankfully to an area with a similar climate, so most of my clothes will be useful there. I'm moving in the summer so I was thinking of buying an extra suitcase so I can fit most of my summer stuff in them. I'll ask my parents to send my winter stuff once I've moved. This is also a good time to really sort out all my stuff and decide what I am still wearing and what is just chilling in my closet for whatever reason. My real concern are my 'luxury items' like shoes and handbags, it might be a bit ridiculous to send 10 pairs of almost similar brown boots and 3 pink handbags to the US, but then again, kids often look alike and you don't get rid of them for that reason, right? I don't think I'll be bringing any linnens, apart from a travel towl and a small sleaping bag, and my special anti-allergy pillow cases. Oh and all my make-up, conditioners, nail polish, etc.
  8. Yeah, it all seems super affordable! But I also have the factor of being an international, so getting a roommate just seems a bit easier. I don't know yet, I keep alternationg between getting a studio, or getting a rommate.
  9. Hey guys! I received and offer from WSU, and I'm trying to figure out the housing situation in Pullman. To the people who are also going to attend WSU, are you going to live alone or trying to look for a roommate?

    2018 Interviews and Results Thread

Guys! I have been accepted into Washington State! My top school, so I am very happy! I got the news yesterday when I woke up...I was feeling super down lately because I had only received rejections, so I was planning to spend the weekend working on a proposal for a school in Europe. But then I saw THE e-mail....freaked out, called my mom, my friends, etc..

    Let’s just TALK about it...

    Animal geography

Hi guys! I am prepping for the upcoming cycle and researching schools and programs. I want to obtain a PhD in animal studies and although I mainly look into anthropology programs, I think human (animal) geography (among others) would be a good fit too. Now, I've been looking into anthro programs for more than a year now but I don't know the field of geography very well. Would you guys have any recommendations for me? Of couse I am going to google the s**t out of search engines and jourmals, but maybe you could give me a head start!

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Hey guys, Unfortunately, like many others, I did not get accepted in the 2017 cycle. After taking some time off from my research idea's and this forum, and focussing on my great great job in customer service I started working on my proposals again a week ago. When I applied last year I had no idea what to expect and what to do. This year I'll be better prepared and hopefully not the third, but the second time’s a charm! To make a long story short, how are you preparing for the 2018 cycle? If you got rejected last year what will you do different this fall? I'll start: 1. I re-read the feedback I got from two PoI's and realized they were actually pretty positive! They did not say 'you and your ideas suck' but 'your idea's are interesting but your SoP has to be more theoretical in this competitive field'. When I got rejected I was so sad that I couldn't see the feedback for what it was. 2. Improve my SoP. Since I'm not from the States I had no idea how to write a good SoP and nobody proof-read it for me. I'm now writing a more European-style proposal (very extensive) that I'm going to narrow down for my SoP. I'm also going to send it to as many people as possible. 3. Apply to more schools. I only applied to 4 schools because I was thinking too much inside the box. This year I’m not only going to apply to anthro departments, but I’m also going to try my luck at Human Geography and Latin American Studies departments. Fire away!

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Thanks! Thats really helpful. I'll mix it up with what I've seen in the handbook!

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

So for one of my SoP's I have to provide an anticipated timeline. Does anyone mean what they mean by that? There is already a clear timeline in the graduate handbook so I wonder what they want me to add. My PoI is working in the field right now and he won't be back before the deadline.

Contacting POI after applications are in?

I don't. I assume they are busy enough as it is, and I don't feel like it is going to add anything to the 'relationship' I have with them. If I am serious about applying I end our email conversation by informing them I am ready to apply.

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Hahahaha, mine is binge watching the X-files in preparation for the new season, and trying to keep my house clean. Only one of those two things is working...

I took your advice and found a super cool school I actually have a great fit with. Thanks!

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Me too I guess, and I'm not even going to make the same mistake as last year and check the results page. I'm just going to wait untill I get email,s or notifications from app acounts.

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Its just that I'm not sure how strong the fit should be. One school is specialized in my general geographical region, but there isn't a theoretical fit. One school kinda shares my thematical focus on environmental anthropology and my geographical region, but when I look at their cources I'm missing certain things. I don't want to spend money on schools that I think would have better matching applicants, but like you said I do wanna cast a wide net. Pfff

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Congrats! I still have one deadline on January 31, and I'm still deciding about 2 schools, to submit or not to submit...

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

I am freaking out for no special reason...I just checked the results page (so dumb, imo this only makes me geel worse) and one of my fav schools is already sending out acceptances for other departments. The departmental deadline is in january but the graduate school deadline was in november. I know results for anthro are not related to other departments, but still!

Omg, how did I miss this? Congrats, Im so happy for you!

    Prepping for the 2018 cycle!

Nooo,, don't do it!! The other day I woke up super happy, and halfway through my way to work I realised it was all fake I don't want Januari to be here, I remember being rejected 4 times last year so well that I almost prefer living in this Schrodingers application limbo forever.
