What exactly are prestige and rankings determined by? I feel like a lot of people just take rankings at face value without questioning who determines them (i.e., which people have enough power to determine rankings, that the field of psychology is still dominated by white men who are biased when selecting which grants get funded, etc.) Because I'm considering a super less well-known school over a top 5 program - it looks like I'd be able to publish about the same amount, the faculty at this less well-known school are super respected in their field, etc. And this lesser known school is extremely competent in terms of diversity and social justice compared to all the other programs I applied to, including this top 5 one. Though, as OP touches on, people have told me that going to this top 5 program would help me get a job after graduation - but at this point I'm not sure it's the type of job I would even want (though this program was great when I interviewed, just not as good a fit for me I think). I'd be curious to hear what other people think, because after going on some interviews I feel like basing your decision on fit is the way to go.

I am in the same boat. My top two schools are both counseling programs. One is pretty well known for counseling but both are no where near as prestigious at the clinical program I interviewed at. And honestly? I was not nearly as impressed with the clinical program as I was with the counseling. I just think "fit" is SO important. I didn't feel the fit with the clinical program like I did the other two, and if you're going to be there for 4-6y yrs I think it's better to choose where you think you'll thrive the most. Just my two cents though.

  2. I'll be the first to say my GRE scores were AWFUL, like below average awful. To the point where I cried in front of my mentor and said applying was pointless. But I worked my butt off for the past two years (doing research in a psych lab, presenting multiple projects at national/regional/local conferences, working in a clinical setting) to off set the awfulness of my scores. This is my first cycle to apply w/o a masters and I received three interviews out of 9 PhD programs I applied to. Did it keep me from getting more? Probably. But did it keep me out of the running? Absolutely not. Not one of the schools I've interviewed at even mentioned my GRE scores. My advice is to aim for the highest you can, but don't get discouraged. Your hard work will be noticed by the right people and the right schools!

    Wow that's crazy!

I met a girl at an interview who said, in a previous year, her friend got waitlisted at 3 places and ended up with offers from all of them... So yeah, strange things can happen when it comes to waitlists!

To add to this, a girl from my lab who waitlisted at all of her schools she interviewed at (4, if not more I believe) and ended up receiving offers from all of them! It's a slim chance but a chance none the less! :)

For those of you who have been through this process before - I've been trying to prep for interview questions and I'm having trouble finding blogs etc specifically for counseling psych  questions I may be asked. I know these interview are similar to clinical but how else do I need to prep? What kind of questions might I be asked about clinical work? Also how do group interviews work, I may have a few of those throughout the cycle. Thanks!

I have interviewed at two counseling programs this cycle and I found that the counseling programs did not focus on my CV (research experience really) as much as I thought they would. They seemed to focus more on my professional goals and things I stated in my personal statement. I also found that many wanted to know why I chose to apply to counseling vs. clinical so it may be good to have an answer ready for that one! Also, you may know that most counseling programs have a large emphasis on diversity so I made it known that I chose to apply to programs who promoted diversity because of the population I want to work with. Just some things I noticed!

As for group interviews, I felt like that was the easiest part of the whole interview. We all were given one question to answer (a random question) and then the floor was open to us to ask any questions we had. Of course, this could be different anywhere you go but I felt like everyone in my group had a very positive experience.

  5. So I just received an email this morning from a school stating that the graduate college has reviewed my app and referred it to the psychology dept. Is it weird that it's just now going to the dept? I saw that this school had interviews for their clinical dept (so I assumed rejection) but I applied to their clinical "child" track so could this go through a separate process?

    Anyone's thoughts/personal experiences are appreciated!

Don't stress -- they are actually pretty laid back from my experience. I've had 3 in the past month.

One even called when I was playing Xbox and we talked about food for a solid 20 mins. I doubt that will be your experience, but I definitely wouldn't stress! Have a note card with a few questions and just have a conversation. I'm sure you'll do great!

I had one last week and it was no where near as formal as I thought it was going to be. I had 3 different colored note cards One was questions for her, one was questions about the program, and one was just information about my own research experience that I may forget to put in.

Smile on the phone, I was told to do this by all the faculty members in the lab I work in! I know it sounds ridiculous but it really puts a different and more positive inflection on your voice. Which leads to also dressing up. Sounds even more ridiculous  but I also wore a suit for my phone interview. Helped me get into the mindset of A.) feeling like a badass, and B.) knowing something professional and important was about to happen.

Relax, don't feel the need to ramble on, and be comfortable with brief moments of silence, it is OK to think about an answer and it is OK that the other person is thinking as well.

Thank you both! I am under the impression that 5 faculty will be listening in on the interview which I think is what made me nervous about how it would go. I will definitely be using your advice though! :)

Any idea if the Michigan State rejections are generic?  I didn't get a rejection, which is weird because I didn't get an interview either.  Same with Idaho State and I know those are generic.  It just seems weird that I didn't get a single interview from all schools, but yet, I'm in the amorphous void of not getting the rejections either.

Same thing happened to me with Nebraska-Lincoln. Everyone was getting interviews or rejections and I was sitting in silence. Someone told me they probably had different tiers of how they reject and that mine was on the way..they were right, I got mine a week after everyone else. I'm sure that's not the news you wanted to hear but that is what happened to me personally. Hoping that you get better news than me! :)

Now I'm going to worry about this, of course! Argh.

Im trying to pack to leave for an interview weekend tomorrow and getting really frustrated trying to fit all my hair products (necessary to tame my ball o' frizz) into TSA's silly regulations.

I didn't even think about the 3oz rule when you fly carry on only..ugh!

I think I'm wearing one down and curly too but I'm worried about frizz, and messing with it like you said. So many things to think about, ughhhh.

EXACTLY! I hadn't even thought about it until a girl in my lab mentioned how someone told her if you tend to touch your hair like bangs, or move it from side to side then maybe think about wearing it up but wearing mine up always gives me a headache. Decisions, decisions.

A school I'm interviewing at just sent a MASS e-mail to all people interviewing showing everyone's names/e-mails..  Should I be concerned? Should I not care? Is it wrong I feel a little uncomfortable other candidates have access to my name, my e-mail, and can google/search me? Eh..

Names AND emails?! That sounds like way too much personal information for my liking. I was shocked when one of my schools sent out a schedule with just our first and last names on it. The stalking has more than likely commenced.

  11. Oh just thought of something I am growing concerned about. My ladies (and dudes!) with long hair, what did you do with yours for interview? I want to wear it down and curly but am worried that I may be messing with it too much throughout the day. Do you guys think wearing it up is more professional? Thoughts?

Do women usually carry purses at interviews? I have two options. One is a small cross-body bag that only has space for basics/essential items. The other is a proper purse large enough to fit a laptop, notebook, folio, umbrella, etc. I don't really like carrying a purse but I'd rather not be the only person without one!

I'm also concerned about this. I have a leather binder I planned to keep extra CV's/my interview questions/etc. in but I am strongly considering carrying a small cross-body purse to keep keys/phone/chapstick/granola bar/wallet in. I'm sure they won't necessarily care all that much as long as you aren't fidgeting with it during the actual interviews but who knows

  13. School Name: Sam Houston State
    Area/Degree: Clinical Psychology
Rationalization: Assuming my terrible GRE scores or that maybe not all my materials were received via the Postal Service.
Comment: Presumed. Interview weekend is next week.
Coping Tactics: Prepping for interviews, listening to my uber supportive friends tell me how awful living in Huntsville TX would be, haha (whatever helps right?)

    School Name: University of Missouri-Columbia
    Area/Degree: Clinical Psychology
Rationalization: Again, GRE scores probably had something to do with it.
Comment: Presumed. Interviews are in a couple days and I haven't heard anything. Pretty bummed about this school.
Coping Tactics: Prepping for interviews, doing my new workout regimen in hopes it will relieve the stress...so far not working :P

Hello! Has anyone heard from the University of Rhode Island yet? If so, would you be kind enough to PM me the initials of your POI? Also, congratulations to those of you that have received interview invitations to UMass Boston! Would you be kind enough to PM me the initials of your POI? Thank you so much! Good luck to everyone! :]

I heard back from Rhode Island earlier today. The invite came from two graduate coordinators and didn't mention anything specific about my specific POI's but I can PM if you'd like!

Has anyone gotten formal rejection letters? I have only gotten one rejection from my POI but haven't received any formal rejection emails or letters. Is this abnormal?

I got a formal rejection email from the program coordinator if that counts, kind of thankful because it eliminated any false hope I had

Rationalization: Not greatest GRE scores, plus there was a ton of applicants.
Comment: Not too upset about it, my POI wasn't very friendly when we interacted with each other.
Coping tactics: Knew it was coming since I saw offers had already been sent out. Chalked it up to if they don't want me, then I don't want to be there either! Going to focus on the interviews I have!
