  1. When I was about 7-8, I was holding a kitten. My 4 year old sister decided it would be funny to scare me (and kitten in the process) so it sunk its claws into my right cheek.. and to top it off I got cat scratch fever from the wound and almost died. The doctors could not believe I actually caught it, apparently its semi rare?

So ever since, my "cat scratch fever scar" has been one of my friends/SO's (like all of them weirdly enough) favorite "features" of mine and one of their favorite conversation starters

I've also heard this, it seems a good number of programs are bringing in more applicants than usual to interview because there are so many competitive people, but at the same time there are funding concerns due to the political climate so some departments have even tighter budgets than they anticipated. It's a rough combination.

I've seen this funding issue as well. The majority of my interviews had no less than 6 students competing for one spot per faculty member. My friends who are current PhD students said they've never seen anything like it in the past few years so clearly this year was full of talented individuals!

  3. I've read a few people on other psych threads say that their POI's reached out to them and indicated their rejection/waitlist status has been due to funding issues. Personally, I know one of my POI was originally told they could take two and then was informed after interview day they would only be allowed to take one. Is this bc of the administration stuff? I don't know but I think it is popping up more than any of us expected it to. Hope this helps!

  4. I took the GRE twice. First time I used Magoosh for months before I took it and yes, I think it is wonderful BUT I struggled with the guiding myself through quant section so my first GRE experience was so unbelievably horrible that I barely made it to my car before I started bawling. I knew I'd need someone to help coach me through the quant sections so I enrolled in a Kaplan 8 week course. Obviously not everyone has the extra money for this but I will say that doing the in-class work, the out of class work, and having someone to answer my questions in person helped boost my confidence. My Q score went up 9 points, my V went up 5, and my writing went up to the almost 90%tile.

I think it's all about how you learn most effectively and for me, that's having someone there to confirm I was doing the sections right. Just my own personal experience :)

Another waitlist notification and both due to decreased funding. Feedback from all POIs was that there is very little I can do to improve my application which I find so much worse than having a pin-point shortcoming that I can improve if I have to apply again. I know its not over till April 15 but I know that I'll be worrying till then and not dedicating as much focus to work :/

ETA: And to salt the wound an acceptance to the program I was waitlisted at got posted right after I read my status. Going off the forums for a while to meditate.

Same thing happened to me regarding funding at one of my top choices. POI was told they would be allowed to take two...came back and was told they could only take one so it was the waitlist for me. Stay strong my friend, I will be sending you all the good vibes!! :)

  6. I applied to 12 and I think if I just include GRE scores/test (what a joke!), application fees (average cost $60), background check, transcript fees, etc. it added up to about $1,200 roughly. Then I tried to drive and stay with grad students for my interviews but had to fly across the country for one interview so I'd say I spent 700ish (flights $350, hotels $200) on hotels/flights/food while traveling.

So happy I can say I got accepted and that it was worth it because my wallet hasn't stopped crying since August

  7. So this isn't necessarily about interview attire BUT I asked a school if it were possible for me to stop by and see the dept/meet the people due to receiving an acceptance from them after a phone interview. I'm not about to roll up in sweats or a full on suit but do you guys think nice top, nice jeans, flats would be okay? Or too informal?

Has anyone been in a position where they've received a verbal offer of admission (call or informal email from POI) but did not receive a follow up formal offer from the school? My POI told me she was offering me a spot about a week ago and I still haven't gotten anything official from the school

I got an offer a little over a week ago and still haven't either. I know they had to process my background check and that can take time but I am so anxious waiting! I want to make sure I actually got accepted and didn't make it all up in my head haha ;)

To those who went to UNLV interview weekend...they said today we hear back. Does anyone remember what time they said they're meeting? Today is going to be a long day....

My friend got an offer from them today! Not sure if anyone is seeing who's getting in..it looks like the results page is broken :(

Thoughts: Feeling so excited and so lucky!  I had a change of heart during this application season because I applied to several clinical psychology programs and only this one experimental program.  After thinking about it for the past few months, I realized clinical psych wasn't for me and my heart was suddenly set on social psychology.  Very glad I realized before potentially starting a clinical program!

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances!

I felt the same way too! I always thought clinical was the only route for me but after interviewing, my heart kept saying counseling. Congrats on your acceptance!!

Thoughts: I am very excited to have received an offer. I was uncertain going on the interview if I would like the program/location because I am from the east coast. I loved everything about the school including the program, the current graduate students, and most importantly my POI. I have one more interview, but I am most likely going to accept this

Congrats! I'm an Okie born and raised and can say that if you choose to come here, you will be surrounded by the nicest people. Everyone I know in the OSU psych dept loves it.

  12. School: University of Central Arkansas
    Program: Counseling Psychology
    Date of Notification: 2/16/17
    Method of Notification: Email
Thoughts: I'm happily surprised. Interviewed via phone call with all the faculty at once which I felt was a death sentence for an acceptance. I wasn't super confident about my interview but I must've done better than expected! More than likely accepting since I can do forensic work! Plus full assistantship, what more can a girl ask for? :)

  13. Anyone been accepted off a phone interview? I recently did and after not liking some of the other places I've interviewed at, I'm really thinking I will accept it. My only worry is, I haven't seen the facility/met the grad students yet. Is it weird to ask if I can come visit the campus so I can get a good feel for where I'll be the next 4-6 years or is that weird?

    Any advice would be great!
