  1. Ha! I was just about to suggest mint.com! I feel ya @ellieotter ...I will be going from making a therapist's salary to having only the $1,000 a month stipend plus of course having to pay for 3-4k each semester in fees...I'm thankful for the tuition waiver but man between losing my salary, paying fees and paying for another residence for M-F the PhD journey is NOT for the faint of heart. I will miss having extra money to spend lol! My husband and I are trying to do it loan free. Good luck at Central Arkansas!
  2. Now that I have accepted an offer here is my update...I was waitlisted at two counseling psychology programs (both of which I felt were good fits for me and each had pros and cons to them): Oklahoma State University and University of Oklahoma. OSU was my top choice as it meant I wouldn't have to get an apartment 2.75 hours away from my husband all week however I didn't end up getting an offer from OSU. (For anyone still waiting on OK state counseling psychology as of the 17th there was one offer still out.) I removed my name from the OSU waitlist on 3/17 as they said there were still 5 people ahead of me on the waitlist. On the 17th I accepted the offer with OU and am happy and grateful for the offer. I went from thinking I would not get an offer to being shocked when I was called with one. It can happen. Good luck to everyone out there still waiting! P.S. Would love to hear from anyone of my cohorts who also accepted an offer from University of Oklahoma:counseling psychology!
  3. Does anyone know when movement starts to happen on the wait list? I have heard in mid-march people start making decisions which then affects wait listers. My top choice still has two offers out; I would like to give my second choice (that I received an offer from 2.5 weeks ago) a "yes" or "no" soon...I hate making them wait but I don't want to give a definite answer until I hear that my top choice has no offers out anymore.
  4. CP fun, I'm from Michigan...Although I'm from West Michigan so I can't give you much info about Ann Arbor specifically. Here is some information about Michigan in general. 1. Summer and fall are gorgeous here 2. Winter drags on for a long time here...It's rough (especially jan-march) but the summer and fall make it bearable again. 3. The Lakes...Visit the Great Lakes especially Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. They are the most clean and beautiful 4. Go on a fall color tour...Especially further up north 5. Visit the great tourist sites and cities over the summer: tahquemenon falls, Mackinac island, mackinaw bridge, traverse city, Ludington, south haven, Grand Haven etc, tall ships festival in bay city, frankenmuth 5. If you like craft beer you are in for a treat...Microbreweries are exploding all over the state 6. Spring tends to be pretty soggy...Everything is thawing out 7. People aren't as nice and hospitable as the south but are nicer than other states 8. Michiganders are serious about their apple cider...And donuts. October is the time when everyone goes to a cider mill and gets fresh cider, yummy donuts and buys some pumpkins for Halloween. 9. Unlike the south and some states in the Midwest (KS, OK) they actually know how to put down salt on the roads and plow the roads so you can get out and about during the 5 months of winter. 10. Try a pastie at least once- they sell them all over in northern Michigan- it's like a meat pie. 11. Every tourist town in MI has a fudge shop...Absolutely delicious 12. Ice cream is usually seasonal here - especially in small towns...So get your fill in the summer. Most of the businesses in the beach tourist towns are seasonal and are only open from memorial day to labor day. 13. Meijer is awesome! It's a like a Walmart but a million times better. 14. Bottle/can returns....You get 10 cents back on each return. Meijer and Walmart have exchange machines. 15. "Party stores" are basically liquor stores on steroids since everywhere from Walgreens to Walmart can sell refrigerated wine, beer and liquor. 16. Don't let the cold scare you off..It's a great state and I miss it everyday ?
  5. I was waitlisted at University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. REALLY hoping to get into OSU but I think I a lot of other people would have to turn down their offers before I get an offer However they were able to provide me with some good feedback on strengthening my application by adding more research experience since it's mostly been clinical for the past 6 years so that was encouraging. If i don't get in this year I will definitely re-apply this fall or in the near future.
  6. Has anyone heard from Wichita state university, university of Tulsa, or university of Houston regarding clinical program interviews?
  7. @BBoy yes thank you! I got an interview from them too! I will be interviewing Friday afternoon. What time slot did you get?
  8. Yes it does mean low paying work. You can make more if you enter into private practice or group practice and get onto insurance panels but you usually cannot do this for several years after you are licensed and you aren't licensed which until a couple years after you graduate with your MSW. Plan on making about 45-50k a year...As low as 35k can happen too. Also, if you are an independent contractor and work a lot of hours you can make more...Here in Oklahoma once licensed my agency pays $47.75/hr to independent contractors. So some of my coworkers who work a ton of hours make 60-70k a year but most who work normal hours make 45-50k a year.
  9. @tiramisu I don't know about any in PhD programs in CA as I mostly researched this problem for the OK/TX/KS/MO/AR area. I also have my Master's (However, I am a licensed marital & family therapist) and what i found is that a lot of programs will only give you a little credit towards their doctorate; you really have to research each school and program specifically and thoroughly to find out if they will take a significant amount of time (a year or two) off the total time. I found that some programs (like Oklahoma state university: counseling psych and university of oklahoma: counseling psych)) are specifically targeted for post master's students. For example, OSU counseling psych takes 5 post master's students each each and 3 post bachelor's and they advertise it only taking 4 years for their post master's students (vs. 5 years for their post bachelor's students). Regarding licensing...something I am sure you have already found out- licensing varies by state and different licenses have different requirements so be mindful of this when thinking about your future career options. I feel your pain regarding deciding whether or not to apply- it's a huge commitment and can be frustrating knowing you already have graduate school credit...I went through the same thing! Good luck!
  10. I applied to the following programs: University of Houston: Counseling Psychology University of Houston: Clinical Psychology University of Oklahoma: Counseling Psychology (Received an interview invite via email on 12/16) University of Tulsa: Clinical Psychology Oklahoma State University: Counseling Psychology Oklahoma State University: Clinical Psychology Has anyone heard from Oklahoma State University: Counseling Psychology yet? I am really hoping to get into this program!
