For shadowing itself you really only need to see a few sessions or at most a few days to be considered shadowing. All they want to know is that you saw the sessions and understand what a genetic counselor really does in a session. Otherwise after you feel you have a good grasp of a few sessions, you can see if you can arrange some phone call interviews for a larger variety of counselors that way maybe you could do it on you're lunch break or when it is slow where you work. The only way to get shadowing is to have to find the time to take a few days off work, depending on how flexible you're work schedule and boss are, maybe you can work something out. If you can't or don't want to use your personal/sick days, see what you could do to get a day off here or there. Either see if come in on a weekend, come in early or stay late a few days, do some work at home, or do a really tedious task no one likes to do or has been put off for a long time. Maybe instead of a full day you could take a half day on a few different days. It really will depend on you're work place and how you can ask for the few days off you need, and it will give you a chance to have a professional conversation with your management. Also try to talk with the counselor you'll be shadowing to get a feel for how many clients they have in a day, how long the sessions are, what time's the sessions are scheduled for, and their no show rate for clients. This will all tell you if you need to spend a full day there or just a half day. Also important is how many counselors in staff that would be willing or able to let you shadow. As if there is only 1 then if a client cancels, you're stuck waiting around for the next one. For me, the first full day I shadowed, there were 6 patients scheduled, but only 1 showed up, so I shadowed an other day where all 6 showed up. So it will depend on day and place you shadow.

I second what @UTGC said, it's a lot of luck and based on the popularity of the school for the particular round of applicants. Maybe one school is all their accepted student's first choice, therefore the waitlist wouldn't move at all since everyone would accept. But on the other side you could have a school that few of the applicants have as their first choice, and they get accepted elsewhere and give up their slot. The waitlist itself can also be dynamic where there could be 10 students ahead of you, but they got accepted elsewhere, so you move up the waitlist. On match day (April 24th) you probably won't know much other than accepted, denied, or waitlisted, with some programs being able to tell you if you're in the top or bottom half of the waitlist. Otherwise you will know more the second or third day as other applicants make their decisions, with applicants being required to make a decision by April 26th end of day. The unmatched applicant process then begins on April 28th. Also for @GCFaith92, you have until the end of the day on April 26th to make your decision on any outstanding offers, or else they expire, so don't have to make any decisions until then and no school will penalize you for it.

For the back of your ankles I would recommend getting the real thick fabric bandages and putting them anywhere on your feet you think your shoes might rub, then put your tights on. Also your outfit is cute and I too recommend nude tights and maybe a blazer of some sort of you have one?

Tip for anyone looking for hotels, try calling and see if you can get the university rate for the school you are interviewing with. I've only tried it with Hilton brand hotels, but you never know where might honor a special rate for "University business". Also Hilton has a free Honors program you can sign up for that you automatically get lower rates, also you accumulate points for anyone interested in that. I still found calling and booking a reservation under your honors number tends to get you a cheaper rate than online in the rewards sign-in, not really sure why though.

I'm sure you were fine. They weren't expecting you to just know everything about a field you aren't even in, why would you need to go to school then. I think they just wanted to see how you could think on your feet, and they chose to do it with topics instead of the typical interview questions that anyone could easily Google search and thus prepare for. So I'm sure they are expecting everyone to fumble, but it's how you pushed through or atleast tried to answer that probably matters more.

I was also at ISU this weekend, we would have seen each other! It was definitely a stressful day. For everyone else, ISU had a lot of questions towards gauging how much you know or can think through current topics in the field. So anyone interviewing there be prepared for that. They still had typical interview questions (strengths, weaknesses, etc.), but the focus on thinking as a bit different than what I've heard from other programs. Also the writing portion was nothing to worry about and you type it up using word, so don't worry about your handwriting or spelling.

I'm not sure if anyone on here is in the Chicago area, but I just found a cool free event tomorrow that will be discussing CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/matter-keynote-genetics-gene-editing-with-crisprcas9-intellia-tickets-32033892234?utm_source=eb_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=order_confirmation_email&utm_term=eventname&ref=eemailordconf

The only reason I'm not wearing mine is because I'm a fidgeter and if I have a ring I will play with it, which I think will look worse than not having the ring on. So keep in mind any small quirks you might have that you want to lessen.

Yeah, I got that impression as well. I also prefer to get hotels since I don't want to feel like a burden on anyone and I feel I can get a better night's rest in a hotel than a stranger's house. But I look forward to seeing you at the dinner!

Of course! We're all here to help each other out! I'm so nervous, it's my first interview of the cycle. I will let you know how it goes! Also I noticed @Gorays39 mentioned Northwestern. Last year they emailed me on February 17th, which was a Wednesday. Maybe we will hear back by Wednesday next week? Either way I hope it is soon!

Sounds pretty similar to a lot of the other programs. I see you applied to Northwestern as well, I interviewed with them last year and their interviews were with 7 people with a wine and cheese reception after everything. It was obvious that each person had a theme and 1-2 specific questions they had to ask along with just the general discussions. It wasn't too bad but it was an exhausting long day (8:30am-6:30pm). I too was waitlisted there and of course everyone said yes. I got their interview request on 2/17 last year, so I keep trying to tell myself to relax as it's more than a week away.

I know Northwestern interviews around 60, and accepts about 15 of those. Last year there was 6 interview dates. Indiana State has three interview dates this year, and I would guess there are around 10 people per interview date, so 30 total, and I believe they take around 5-7 students.

When it comes to personal statements they tend to put the part about not restating your resume for the reason of just not simply restating it as I did this, this, and this. It is good to mention things that are in your resume but elaborate on them and how you felt this experience prepared you or interested you in genetic counseling. For example you may list a volunteer experience on your resume, but in your personal statement you would go into detail how that experience has made you grow as a person, or helped you realize how to cope with emotionally difficult situations, or any way it links to your desire to be a genetic counselor. With some advice from last year I even went as far as summarizing each paragraph with how the experience I just talked about applied to genetic counseling (whether it was interest, personal growth, skills necessary, etc.). I think having concluding sentences like this really help hit your point home even if you already mentioned the characteristics in your paragraph.

I interviewed with Northwestern last year and mostly everyone was in suits/dress pants blazer combos. I personally wore a gray suit with a purple dress shirt and low heels. There were around 10 people there that day and from what I remember there was 1 guy in a suit (only guy at my interview date), 1 girl in a nice dress/blazer, 1 girl with a skirt suit, 1 girl a little more casual with a 3/4 sleeve blazer and non-matching dress pants (but I don't think it looked bad), and otherwise nothing else stood out to me. I would definitely stress wearing shoes you can walk in as most schools will give you a tour at some point. Northwestern we spent about an hour walking around campus before going to a wine and cheese event afterwards where you were also standing and mingling for an other hour. Also on a different note, I know a lot of applicants are women (myself included) and I think I heard Northwestern had 4 guys they interviewed last year, so it can sometimes be a little intimidating on both sides being both the only guy in the room or interviewing the same day as a male applicant.

I just realized that that signatures weren't automatically enabled. I did this on a computer not mobile, but for anyone interested go to the top and click where your user name is --> account settings --> signature --> "view signatures?" You can also add your own signature and any other profile info here.
