Sweet! That answer I was looking for, but only now if I can get the wife to buy it...

The reason your eyes hurt after reading longer texts on the Ipad is because it uses an LCD. A Kindle or Nook are better on the eyes for reading as they don't use a backlit LCD, and are much closer to reading an actual paperback. Course then you get into the "well the Ipad does so much more!" argument, which is why I"ll ultimately get an Ipad.
  4. Ha! I'm afraid to ask, but why not. Why are you awed by "humanities folks"? Awesome! I've got another thread bookmarked that deals with Zotero vs Mendeley (I think that's the other online bib program, right?), but I"m always interested in getting more info. I have the same workflow for using Dropbox (organizing on HDD, and then copying to Dropbox), so I'll take a serious look at Zotero. How long goes it take to get comfortable with Zotero? Pretty easy to get used to it? Endnote, IMHO, is just horribly complicated.
  5. Clarification? After reading through this thread, I'm unsure what your question means. My thoughts on the thread: i'm a packrat when it comes to analog vs digital as well. I much prefer physical papers, but am attempting to find a method that works for me. I think I"ll get an Ipad, where I can view PDFs, mark them up as well, and then also utilize dropbox between my laptop and Ipad when I need to sync notes, etc. I haven't really made the commitment to any one program yet (Endnote, etc), but I'm damn sure I need to before my PhD program starts this fall. I've been looking into Zotero and the like, but still haven't figured out what is the best. I'm hesitant against cloud storage, but wonder if there is a program that allows you to store both locally and in the cloud. I just don't trust having my database of PDFs on some random server that can crash and never to be found again.
  6. Strangefox: As I know you're in Communication like me, I think it's a great topic to start and especially coming from outside the US, it's important to know what to expect going into, what I'm assuming, is doctoral studies? I'm looking forward to other's insights as well, as I'm thinking there might even be a difference between one's MA/MS advisor, and PhD advisor? Disregard the post about this even being a topic. It's quite a relevant topic.
  7. IMHO, I'd have to agree that the rationale here is flawed. While I may not have attended an "Ivy League" (nor did I have a desire to), my pursuit of an MA was the practical next step after undergrad. By pursuing my MA, I wasn't trying to hide a blemished undergrad record or trying to make myself look better for a doctoral program. I know people in my field (Communication) that go from BA to PhD, or BA to MA to PhD, so one path doesn't fit all. I think there are too many factors involved in deciding which path to take, so it's probably tough and unfair to generalize specific discipline or field.
  8. Absolutely hate when people don't take those signatures off! Arg! It's so annoying! But... it does make sense that it shows people that you are sending a quite restricted email, and to allow some room for spelling and length. So, maybe I'll add it back?
  9. Never ponied up for the actual program, but I just know after toying around with it, I was sold. It's gotten rave reviews, and the people that I know that do use it absolutely love it. I'll get the full program in a few wks once $$ comes my way! Ditto as well to Google Calendar. I usually stick with OEM software (Apple software) unless I can find awesome third party software, and haven't had luck just yet with calendar apps.
  10. Oh how I see myself from 4 years ago wanting to make this very post! I'll be blunt and just say, is there any chance of you continuing on to a PhD, or is the MA your terminal degree for sure? If you have any chance of wanting to pursue a PhD, then definitely go after the thesis. I chose the comp exam route because I thought I'd be living some awesome corporate life, and I ended up getting laid off two days before my wedding. Now I'm knocking on the door of starting a PhD, and I have no thesis in hand. How worried am I? Very! I've learned to get over my major anxieties of not being good enough or being unprepared, but I know I have some serious work ahead due to not doing a Master's thesis. I'm interested to see what others say as my opinion is completely due to the circumstances I now find myself in.

    Bikes

Think I found a competitor to the Dahon Vitesse. Check out this Dynamic Sidekick 8: http://www.dynamicbicycles.com/bicycles/sidekick8.php. Internal hub 8-speed, fenders, 30-lb rated rack, etc.

    Bikes

I drive a Mini, so the folding bike would fit much, much better in my car. Also, I want to take into my office, rather than leave it on a rack, where it has a higher chance of being stolen. I understand the concern about getting a folding bike with no public transportation, but it just fits much better in my lifestyle and overall needs. BTW, just to clarify, what do you mean by hybrid?
  13. I think this may be dependent on the field, as I'm in communication, and most (at least those I know) go into an MA, and then onto doctoral studies. It's how I'm doing it, and how all my friends have as well.
  14. If you're interested, PM and I'll send you some more external links to teaching/pedagogy tips.
  15. No worries. Sometimes you have to unlock, sometimes you don't; it depends if the handset was/is tied to another carrier.
  16. That's tough to answer... Honestly, some of the ATT employees have no clue what is going on, or have no clue what "unlocking is". So you may or may not run into an employee being willing to activate an unlocked phone. I guess my answer here is just to try it. What's the worst that can happen besides them saying "No"?
  17. I'm in the social sciences, but I think your connect between research and teaching is completely valid in whatever field. It is really important to make lessons practical and show they are truly relevant. Remember as a student when you asked yourself "will I actually ever use this?" Presenting in your manner provides a resounding "Yes!" to that question.
  18. I didn't ask about a specific advisor during my visit, but I know the students were not comfortable being completely open about the program. I haven't had bad vibes or heard something negative, but I wish they were allowed and given the opportunity like Eigen was.
  19. I really have a hard time finding shoes that are both good walking shoes and nice dress shoes. I'm one of those that truly dresses my part when teaching, and that typically includes a blazer and nice Kenneth Cole shoes. Dress shoes are notoriously bad for not having proper arch support. I also think shoes are truly an area where you get what you pay for. If you can go the way of truly casual shoes, get some Aasics: THE shoe for running and walking. For dress shoes, I'm leaning toward Cole Haan, which was purchased by Nike and includes their "Air" technology.
  20. Haven't used it, but know it's gonna rave reviews. Apple is including a To Do list in the iOS5 update this fall that is supposedly quite similar to Remember the Milk.
  21. I fear this is where the conversation breaks into madness (we've done pretty well not to so far!). I don't think the conversation is so much about controlling other people's choices, as trying to ensure a safe environment. Whether carry or no carry, I think it's in the pubic's best interest to have a forum where to voice and determine when and where, if at all, carrying a gun is sensible. I complete appreciate everyone's opinions and posts (love, love, love Grad Cafe!). God love our freedom of speech and abilities to disagree.
  22. Why not get a bike? I'm currently looking for a folding bike, and this thread in the Lobby was recently started:
  23. If you're a Mac person, I recommend the app "Things". Great to-do list application. I have a good memory, so I'm still just keeping things my head. I know that my doctoral program will overwhelm my yet-to-be-feeble mind, so I'm searching as well. Thanks for starting this thread! I'm paranoid personally about giving Google too much of my info, but google calendar is really useful. I personally can second the thought on using Gmail drafts as simple lists too.
  24. I'm actually in the opposite position of this thread: going from 2 car to 1 car. My wife and I are moving to a VERY bike friendly city, and our goal is to become a one car family. We'll be able to walk/bike everywhere as the city has amazing bike infrastructure. Selling her Altima, which will in turn help us pay for moving, rent, etc. Course, my wife has to learn to drive a standard, and hopefully the Mini won't need a new clutch soon! I'm gonna get flack for this, but if you absolutely need a car and don't have the funds, consider taking out some student loans. I had to do this in undergrad due to a horrible accident I was in (hydroplaned and totalled car). Not the best situation to be in, but use the loans if you need too. I think the "wait and see" approach is the best thing to do. You might even want to post in the City Guide thread to see what others in the area say about the situation. If you do need one, check out Craigslist and Ebay. I've recommended this elsewhere and will say this again: only use those if you feel comfortable, and can look over a car enough to know it's physical condition. If you are not very car literate, make friends with a local mechanic to help you look over a car if you end up buying one. Actually, make friends with one anyways, as you'll need one at some point if you get a car. My mechanic just so happens to go to church with me, so I lucked out there. Best of luck.. You're not the only one, and def utilize the local public transit. I don't live too far from Nville, and have heard the bus system isn't too shabby there.
  25. Looking at those bands, it seems like there is no reason it shouldn't. Sometimes you can run into the dumb ATT rep who won't activate a phone not bought at ATT. Do realize they may require you sign a contact anyways! The contract's only reason is basically to get a discount on the phone - it doesn't typically mean any type of discount on service. If you go into an ATT store that won't activate the phone without a contract, just keep trying stores. If you're in a more rural setting, you'll have a tougher time, as there'll be less stores obviously.
