  1. Just to provide some clarification on Augustana's rejection letter statement about underserved communities - Augustana is located in a more rural part of the country where there are fewer genetic counselors and there is less access to genetic counselors. When an applicant who is from say Durham, North Carolina, where there are numerous GCs and access is a bit easier (20,000 residents per genetic counselor), has an application that is near equivalent to a person that is from say Miami, FL, where the number of GCs is far less and access is not as simple (1.2 million residents per genetic counselor), Augustana is going to be more likely to accept/interview the applicant with equivalent qualifications from Miami over the applicant from North Carolina. The motivation behind this is that studies have shown that students are likely to return and practice where they are originally from and the goal is to increase number of GCs and access to GCs across all areas of the US.
  2. What a blur today was! I had an offer right away from the school that was not my top choice... Then wait list from the other 3 programs. I was extended an offer off of the wait list late in the afternoon from Augustana and have accepted! I am so happy this finally worked out for me. I wish the best to all of you!!
  3. A woman I met during interviews text me that she got an offer from Houston right away this morning and accepted. Fingers crossed that you hear news soon!
  4. Same experience last year with Emory.. unfortunately ?. Top of my list... but the feelings weren't mutual.
  5. I am currently working at a medical facility where there is a group of genetic counselors. I was able to work with my supervisor to adjust my schedule so that I can shadow the GC's a half day each week (I work 9 hour days 4 times a week and a half day on the days I shadow). I know this scenario won't be feasible for all but if you live relatively close to a medical facility, this is certainly something you can try!
  6. @robyn94 The dinners are typically more casual. The attire is entirely up to you unless otherwise specified in the invite - of those that I attended last year, I saw people in outfits ranging from leggings and sweatshirts to cute casual dresses/skirts.
  7. @WBGC@minja134 I'll have a glass of wine (or two or three) tonight and cheers to us... Time to prep for those interviews we do have!
  8. Waitlisted for an interview at Northwestern for the second year in a row... Not so hopeful that I will be offered one.
  9. I would not assume just yet, programs differ on the pace at which they send out invites. It seems like programs are quite alright with you calling to check on the status of your application. As for the worst case scenario (if you do not get invited for an interview) the programs typically request that you wait to contact them about feedback until the conclusion of the application cycle.
  10. I will be longingly waiting by my phone for a call today... it would be great to be able to schedule with Rutgers the 27th! The cost of flights, hotels, and all really adds up! I am definitely planning on attending the meet and greet at SLC that night so we will likely meet up ? Nothing from Northwestern yet... Maybe today...? We can only hope!
  11. Congrats!! Rutgers is one of the last ones I am waiting to hear on... maybe I'll get a call today? What day are you interviewing at SLC?
  12. I was so confused why it was complete silence yesterday! Let the waiting commence....!
  13. @Blizzard Ugh - I am so sorry to hear that. The best thing to do is contact each of the programs you applied to following the conclusion of the application cycle to see where you could improve for future years. Persistence is key!
  14. I contacted each of the programs to ask for planned interview dates and Northwestern said all of their interviews will be during the first two weeks in April so rest assured!
  15. Based on previous years applying, I anticipate Northwestern's notifications to come out next week at some point. The waiting game is tough!!
  16. Ugh major bummer - feeling the sting as well. I had a really good feeling about their program and was excited for it as well. Oh well - hopefully we each have something else work out!! Chin up, head high and ace the interviews we do have
  17. Right there with ya! Seeing responses on the results page from several schools I have applied to certainly adds to the anxiety. Just trying to stay positive and think good thoughts - hope the shopping at Costco brings you good fortune Congrats! I am excited for you --- and a bit hopeful that I will hear from them today as well! Good luck with the interview!
  18. Congrats!!! I think so... probably to make sure they fill all of the interview slots first.
  19. Had to pop-in to share good news - I received an invitation to interview at Augustana!!! What a relief to have the first one scheduled
  20. Well I am more of a fiction reader so my recent reads have included: Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult - not GC related, but is centered around major ethical issues and healthcare related. Most Wanted by Lisa Scottoline. A little GC related and they do meet with a genetic counselor but the author refers to it as "genetics counseling/counselor". Otherwise this post on Reddit has some suggestions: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClinicalGenetics/comments/4msvyp/book_recommendations_for_an_aspiring_gc/
  21. I heard through the grapevine that Minnesota was reviewing applications last week. Also in checking back on previous years, my notification from Minnesota for rejections came in the second/third week of February.
  22. I am so envious of all of you hearing back from programs and being offered interviews! Sitting here refreshing my Inbox like mad... haha @Ellaie I totally agree with what most have encouraged - Go check it out! I also applied to SLC this year (this is my third year applying to programs) and I had not applied there previously because of the unknown - never been to New York, it's a completely different environment than where I am from (small town girl), and concern about cost of living. Setting my worries aside - they are the longest standing program and a large majority of individuals in the profession have graduated from there! I have shadowed with a SLC alumni and she loved it there. If you feel confident that it is going to fall towards the bottom of your list regardless of the experience the interview might offer, then maybe pass up the interview. For me personally, I am planning on burning up all the PTO I have accrued in the case that I am offered interviews at every program I applied to - my bank account is going to be hurting nonetheless.
  23. Grew up near Iowa City and went to undergrad in Northeast Iowa. *Iowa Proud* over here . If not at interviews, there's a good chance that our paths will cross at some point in the genetic counseling world! Good luck to you as well!!
  24. Hi! The structure and length of the interviews varies quite a bit between programs. For one, there were 7 individual one-on-one interviews, a group exercise, and a lunch with the students packed into a day. For another, there were only two one-on-one interviews, a panel interview, and a student presentation. Overall, the interviewers will be asking about things from your application but they may also ask behavioral interview type of questions. I think the most important part is to have your own questions prepared to ask the interviewers! From the interviews I have attended, it seems like they had about 2-3 questions the interviewer has to ask you and then they leave the remainder of the time for you to kind of guide the discussion.
