  1. I got my login and password emails one after the other this morning at 9 am CST and the results were already posted when I logged in at 10 am. I got the CGS-D and nearly spilled my coffee all over my computer when I screamed. Hold fast, everyone!
  2. hey folks! I wanted to start this thread because I couldn't find one like it yet (please redirect me if it exists!). I'll ask my Q but invite others to ask theirs about negotiating funding here too! We never talk about money, it's all so hush hush around the seminar room, so let's help each other anonymously? Question: How have y'all negotiated upgraded funding offers when the first just doesn't make the cut? My predicament: The school I'm leaning towards if I don't get a scholarship for my top choice (admitted) has offered me base funding plus a very modest admission "bonus", which is considerably less than I got for my master's, and it also just isn't enough to live on (completely financially independent here, no co-signers either). For argument's sake, and without divulging too much about myself, I can confirm that I have a proven record of winning prestigious scholarships, I have been active in university life, GPA is excellent, my CV includes conferences, papers, and academic event organizing, and I am an excellent fit with the university with a supervisor eager to work with me. The only bargaining chip I do not have is the one that keeps sounding like the only one that matters: a competing funding offer. Ridiculously, perhaps, I want that bonus to be multiplied by 3-10, and that lower end is still annoying me. I'm asking my current GPD and PhD peers for advice too, but need all I can get. I am ready to decline this current offer, even if it means no doctorate - that's how much it doesn't work for me. Honestly I saw the offer and had the first moment in this whole process where I was like "well [curse], maybe I'm financially locked out of a PhD after all." Any constructive words are welcome!
  3. hey folks! anyone hear from McGill yet? looks like interviews and offers were out by this time last cycle but I don't see anything on the results page. also, question about u of t's process. I got my acceptance email at like 11:53pm on a Tuesday in Jan. and it said my letter of offer would be sent the following week. It hasn't come yet and the GPA confirmed that the offer specifics (ie. funding) are still being processed and will come by the 19th (still unclear if online or in post). But... I've never heard of a program that sends acceptances before offers, so I'm curious as to why. Anyone have insight on this?
  4. hey all - also an international applicant here and figured I’d get in on the waiting game with you all. got my acceptance into my program and a college and just hoping a scholarship comes through to make the dream happen! I think we’re to find out mid-March if we were shortlisted. Anyone applied to the Smuts or HRH one, too? I can’t find any info on Smuts - # of scholarships, adjudication criteria, notification dates, etc.
  5. Came here to ask the same question as OP! Few other things... Following what @TakeruK said about holding the CGS M going against your chances for an OGS in the future - does that mean it's less likely to receive an OGS after a CGS M? I'm in the same situation as the OP cept I'm starting FT studies at York in fall. I've already accepted the CGS M for first year (of course, because it is more prestigious and $$) and will decline the OGS I was offered, but just planning out the second year of my Masters and wondering if I can kinda plan for/expect an OGS. Also, does anyone know if those limits extend through to Doctoral studies or does it (hopefully!) rest when you apply for the SSHRC instead of the CGS M?
  6. first: I had never even considered sending a thank you but it makes so much sense I feel like "d'uh, thank them" and wonder if it's too late to thank the prof who wrote me a LOR in 2011.... second: though I'd never thought of this specifically, I am well-versed in correspondence etiquette. Send the thank you after he/she submits, do not wait to hear back from the school. You can send another letter/email once accepted, but it may be difficult to thank someone upon rejection cause then you'll probably mention it and that's just not a fun thing to do (I've done it, it sucks, it's an awkward "I let you down" type of thing and just not pleasant). Also, just send a card. Have it ready, and send it once you get the confirmation that they sent your LOR. No need to e-mail as well. Mail isn't that slow, maybe 3 days if it's in the same country, and that's a lovely amount of time for the prof to deal with his/her other stuff before they get a friendly thank you Also take this opportunity to thank the prof for how he/she taught you as well, not just about the LOR. It'll demonstrate that you truly enjoyed and benefited from the relationship, regardless of the result of your application. Good luck!
