  1. One more member of team Stanford Rejects checking in. I wasn't particularly hopeful, so I'm not that bothered by the news. I never saw myself going to Stanford, but I am starting to get straight up terrified that I won't get in anywhere. I need to start getting excited about my contingency plans so that blow doesn't come down too hard.
  2. BU has a snow day today as well, so we're not going to hear from them today, either. Does anyone have an idea of the volume of applications school received this year? I've heard it's been a record year, but I'm curious what that means, number-wise.
  3. It seemed like everyone had heard back from Cincinnati except me, so I broke down and called them. The reason they haven't sent me anything is that I'm number 2 on the waitlist for interviews, so if 2 applicants decline or don't respond I'll be invited for an interview. Woo, I love me some uncertainty. Plus, if I do end up interviewing there, I get to know that I was their last choice going in to the interview! Still, it makes me worry less about the strength of my application over all than being outright rejected would have.
  4. Whoa. Thanks for doing the leg work there. Originally I was only going to apply to Cincinnati, and planned to commute from Louisville if I got in, so I guess I'm glad I was bold and applied to 7 other programs. If I am going to end up moving my whole family, I'd rather know now.
  5. No, I don't think she is on this forum. She was one of the other candidates who interviewed with me the day I interviewed at Emory. I asked if it was everyone's first GC programs interview, and she said that she had interviewed at OSU already.
  6. I just left costco. Nada. Congrats! I met someone at my Emory interview that had already interviewed at OSU in January- they must do several waves, which could explain their particularity about scheduling.
  7. I just had the insane thought that I was at Costco both times I received interview invitations so far, so clearly today is a good day to go grocery shopping.
  8. I can already tell this week is going to be brutal; I'm fully expecting to be contacted by most of the rest of my schools this week, and I don't have great feelings about CU Denver or Cincinnati, seeing as they've already sent out at least some of their interview invitations. I can't stop thinking about checking my email, whether I did well enough at my Emory interview, whether I'll get any more, etc etc etc. How are you guys holding up?
  9. I am pretty sure that many do not, judging by the results tab
  10. Patchwork is a cute 2 player boardgame that she probably doesn't already have, even if she is a boardgame geek. It's sewing themed!
  11. The writing exercise was two short questions, and honestly it felt almost like a break. It was the part I was most nervous about and it ended up being a breeze. I wore a suit because I feel hella dapper in a suit, but there was a woman there wearing a dress and a blazer and she looked great. I can't imagine they care what're wearing as long as you look professional and neat.
  12. It seems like it based on the data from last cycle, and i think that Emory sent out its invites in early January and just now sent out rejections on the 31st. I'm about to get in the car and drive home from Atlanta now. Anyone interviewing at Emory: Everyone was so nice and the interview was very low stress and conversational. Don't sweat it!
  13. Wow this thread is moving fast today! I'm keeping up with your news but I can't post a ton because I'm currently driving to Atlanta to interview at Emory tomorrow. Congratulations to everyone receiving interview invitations! Thank you to those who've offered advice on interviews - I'm so nervous and any information about what to expect helps. I know there are several other people interviewing at Brandeis - have you got a date yet? I'll be there March 15th!
  14. I also just received an interview offer from Brandeis! I also applied to BU and would ideally only make one trip to Boston. Should I ask them if I can pick an interview date now and potentially change it later? What's the etiquette for this?
  15. I am not sure; I'm open to different things. I like working with parents and families, so initially I thought I would end up at a pediatric hospital, but I could also be happy doing something public health focused.
  16. No doubt. No one is going to look at you and think, "Whoa, is she wearing a suit? Man, she is taking this interview way too seriously."
  17. Congratulations! It's so exciting to these updates, even for schools I did not apply to - it's really happening! Every email could be an interview invitation! Do you guys already have an interview outfit put together? What're you wearing?
  18. Since most of y'all are probably mobile and can't see my signature, I've applied to Stanford, UC Irvine, CU Denver, Northwestern, Cincinnati, Emory, Brandeis, and BU, and so far have only heard anything from Emory. Every time my email notification sound goes off I jump.
  19. I am also nervous about the writing exercise. I talked to a med school applicant that said one of his interviews has a writing component and the question was something like, "What should a patient ask their doctor?" Basically, a question requiring no specialized knowledge or practice with a particular kind of writing. Just a 4-5 paragraph essay demonstrating your ability to form a cogent sentence and organize your writing. When are you going to Emory? My interview date is Feb 2nd.
  20. I'd like to solicit your sartorial opinions: I have a medium-sized tattoo that can be covered or not depending on clothing choice. Obviously, for my interview(s), it will not be visible. However, Emory has an optional dinner with current students event the night before the interview. Do you think it would be okay to wear an outfit that shows my tattoo to the dinner? Atlanta is a fair bit warmer than my home right now and it would be a treat to be able to go out in a skirt or dress.
  21. I've been listening to the Series Of Unfortunate Events as audio books in my car with my kindergartener, and was waiting to finish the book series before starting on the show. I'm totally pumped about the casting of Neil Patrick Harris, though - he's such a versatile actor and a great fit for Olaf. I'll put in another vote for Black Mirror, and yes, skip the first one. I wish I had. My husband finally wore me down about Game of Thrones, so I am reluctantly starting that with him. Going to the Grand Canyon with a geologist sounds perfect, like going to an art museum with an art history major. You'll get your own personalized guided tour!
  22. @Gagette - I'm always down for some Eurogames (things like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion) but lately I've been more willing to branch out into storytelling-centric American-style games if they're not to long. My husband got Betrayal At House On The Hill as a Christmas present and I'm super into it. What degree did your husband finish in CA?
  23. Oh my gosh I would never have admitted that if you hadn't done so first. But yes, I did manage to stop pondering my elevator pitch for moment to hit a personal record on deadlift - 200lbs for five reps. I'm happy with it considering my spotty gym attendance through fall semester. Would you guys be open to an introduction interlude? People have said not GC-related things about themselves here and there, but I'm having a hard time keeping everyone straight. There is another Smithie here, right? (Hubbard 2010 drop out, yo!) Also we have a rare male applicant somewhere? I'm a mother of a 5 year old and a 2 year old, and a founding member/current resident of a cute little anarcho-communist intentional community with big dreams. I'm a reformed directionless ne'er-do-well closing in on 30; I went back and finally finished my undergraduate degree last year. When I'm not parenting or commune building or throwing myself into grad school applications, I'm a mediocre powerlifter and totally worthy boardgame player.
  24. Right?! I'm actually at the gym right now, and - get this - I'm not just gonna do a core lift, I'm gonna do accessories and then I'm even gonna take a shower. It feels straight up profligate. I'm not totally out of the application obsession game, though; I've shifted focus to agonizing about interviews instead of essays. I've been vainly building an interview outfit and soliciting med school faculty for mock interviews. *Not* stressing out would just be out of character.
  25. So, because I am a crazy person who likes organizing data, I went through the post results from fall 2016 applicants and organized a rough timeline of when they received their interview requests. Most schools didn't start contacting people last year until February at the earliest. My data pasted in as a table, so I hope the formatting doesn't get completely screwed up when I post this early-mid Jan Emory North Carolina late jan - early feb Pittsburgh Stanford Michigan early feb Brandeis Minnesota Cincinnati Oklahoma early-mid feb UC Denver Boston Sarah Laurance Arkansas Utah UBC Toronto VCU Wayne State UT mid feb Wisconsin Madison Maryland Arcadia Northwestern mid-late feb Icahn late feb Irvine johns hopkins mcgill late feb-early March csus mid march Augustana
