  1. Sure thing! Anything I can do to help set your...friend's...mind at ease ? BA - double major, 3.97 cumulative GPA, 4.0 in each field. MA - 4.0 GPA GRE: 94th percentile verbal, 27th quant, and 94th analytical. Lit Subject 86th; I sent this to all my schools, even those who didn't require it, bc my mentor said it would help my application. Both degrees from a third-tier public uni. Was expecting this to be a hinderance when it came to top 50 programs, but must be they don't care as much as I thought. I had a GAship in my MA, so a year of writing center work, a year of teaching. Took a year between MA and apps, so another year of adjunct teaching in between. I think I had 4 conferences (all at my uni or local), a lecture, a few smaller presentations and roundtables. Also had a really relevant internship last summer, so I think that also helps. Hope this is helpful. My application feels very average with the exception of maybe the internship and the teaching experience, and my mentors were hesitant for me to set my heart on top programs, so this has been very surprising for all of us. Edit: I should say, re: that last anecdote, that my writing sample, while providing a different angle on a really popular EM text, is NOT my best work. I have been SO worried about it but I just didn't have the time to put into it that I needed to. So that's a major reason, besides the third-tier school and the not-upper 90th GREs, why I thought I was not going to end up in a top 20 or 30 program. i think so much of this is about fit and also chance (who is on the committee, how "relevant" interests are, how many people in your field also applied to the same program, how many they already have, etc.).
  2. Sure! (Are you talking test scores, GPA, etc? Happy to share, just want to share the right things! Haha) also, thanks a million!! ?
  3. Same. Mine today was at 2 EST. I'm going to be so nervous for the next few Saturdays if I don't hear much during the week.
  4. Thank you! And I knoooow. Those two are major reasons I applied. And I was about the most awkward person on the phone (as I anticipated being), but I think it was fine. I'll follow up with more questions when I'm not running around the room trying to keep my adrenaline in check.
  5. I just got a call from my POI at UC Davis! I'm in with full funding! So much good news today, everyone! Congrats to all of the Pitt acceptances (and the others I may have missed in my panicked frenzy)! I'M SO EXCITED
  6. @kurayamino @Yanaka @Kilos and @othersamantha - Thanks a million. It's helpful to get a feel for what these are like. And I love the post-it idea. I have to keep reminding myself that they're calling with GOOD news generally, so the "impressing them" part is pretty much over. They're probably not going to revoke an acceptance because of an awkward phone call @eatthatbee Congrats on your acceptance!! Guys, generally speaking, this feels like the longest week of my life. I haven't been feeling all that well anyway, so that's not helping, but knowing that we're in February is making me antsy. I mean, I'm relieved that I'm in at least somewhere, but I still have no funding info and 6 programs to hear from...gahhhh. I just want to have all the info so I can make a decision! I wish there was just a fast-forward button. *headdesk*
  7. Oh, this is random, but I'm curious since @othersamantha mentioned a call from Penn State. Those of you who have received phone calls to inform you of acceptances...what are they like? Are they long, or just a quick "you're in, congrats, here's funding info"? Is there any discussion about research or anything? The reason I ask is because I'm about the most awkward person on the phone, and my track record of reactions to acceptances doesn't bode well for me being calm and composed and professional if a program calls (I'm fairly certain I went into shock when I got the email from Madison, haha). From the looks of it, the UC schools generally make calls, and I just want to prepare myself as much as I can so I don't have a meltdown "in front of" a grad director or POI. Generally speaking, I love being an introvert, but not in these situations. haha
  8. Fantastic news, everyone! Congratulations!!
  9. Awesome! Congratulations on the waitlist!
  10. Thank you! I'm into two, just waiting on funding info for both. I do love the eco/EM slant, especially in relation to print and manuscript cultures. I do a lot of work with 17th century ms recipe books, and the agency that these (mainly) women assign to the natural world through their recipes really Looks forward to where the postmodern sustainability movement is headed. So much respect for beings they didn't fully understand! We could use more of that right now, imo. Also, congrats to all of these new acceptances and interviews! I think things are about to pick up some serious speed around here.
  11. Congratulations to another EM ecocritic! This is so exciting!!
  12. All of my cousins went to MSU in undergrad and grad school and loved it! Way to go! ?
  13. I absolutely second this. I took a year off between my MA and PhD apps (working adjunct at my uni right now...not ideal but it's something) and I'm so glad that I waited. I had plenty of time to revise my WS, to draft and redraft and redraft my SOP, to meet with my mentors regularly, build my CV, etc., all without the stress of homework and three papers at a time and my TAship responsibilities looming over me. And ESPECIALLY because so many deadlines are near the end of the semester. I absolutely think that if I had tried to apply to 8 programs during the last year of my MA, I wouldn't have gotten into a place like UW Madison, because my work (both application materials and my MA work) would have been sloppier and more rushed. It was great to focus on success in my MA, then graduate and focus on success in PhD apps. Of course, one of my friends from my MA cohort didn't do this, applied to 15 programs his last MA year, and got into almost all of them (mostly top 15-20 programs). He was miserable for a couple of months, but obviously it paid off. So it's not impossible, but I certainly couldn't have done it. You'll just have to ask yourself whether you'll have the time, energy, and mental space available. YES. Count me in!
  14. AHHH this is amazing! Congratulations, @Caien! And that fellowship...so exciting!
  15. Aw man, that sucks. I'm sorry, @Lovegood! I did wonder about that big number though. They didn't give me the "over 200 applicants" thing, but did mention the less than 14% bit. Seems like a LOT of students, but then again, they also seem to have a LOT of graduate students in general. Maybe a bunch of them are graduating? Or it's possible I know very little about how these programs work (actually, it's likely, haha). Who knows? Fingers crossed you'll get some good news soon! Ugh, I know. I hate when everything is just TOTALLY up in the air and abstract, and bad news is everywhere we turn on top of that. Though the terrible political news does remind me regularly of why I want to do this in the first place. I just really want everyone to hear from programs. I'm so excited to see where we all end up!
  16. @Lovegood Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get an acceptance next round! Re: your other question, I'm not sure. My POI is good friends with my mentor at my current uni, so they've been in contact and she has been keeping me updated. If you do email to check, I would suggest emailing the DGS instead of your POI. Personally, I worry about "bothering" people (though I'm not sure it necessarily would be a bother. I know I overthink EVERYTHING) whose job doesn't require them to answer questions like that, which is why I suggest the DGS instead (because it is her job). You might also give it another week...this seems really early, so you may hear something soon anyway! Hooray! Congrats on your acceptance and your invite, just getting an ND invite is a big deal! Bravo.
  17. Yay! Way to go, @Avalanched!
  18. This is awesome. I just added my info to the mix! Thanks for starting this, @Warelin
  19. Congrats @biyutefulphlower! Can't speak to the question (didn't apply to OSU) but a waitlist is certainly not a bad position to be in! Fingers crossed for you!
  20. Oh my gosh! Congratulations @Wyatt's Terps @Ashley828 @engphiledu and everyone else! I can't even keep up with all of the acceptances! I'm thrilled for all of us! Way to go! So much good news... @Lovegood, thank you! I'm early modern book history/eco/digital humanities, so literary studies. A wide focus, but apparently a good combo for UW. I did talk to one of my mentors, who has been in contact with my POI at UW, and she said that as of last week they were still making decisions. It seems like the acceptances that went out yesterday might be first-rounds or just the first in a wave. I would imagine they're still working through all the applications, though, so I hope you hear soon! Also, I can't find the post back, but someone asked about funding...I have no funding info from UW, the DGS said to expect to hear about my financial package by mid-Feb. Gosh, you guys. I'm so excited right now I can hardly contain myself.
  21. Looks like there is a bunch of cross posting going on, and also two of us ? Congratulations!
  22. I GOT INTO MADISON!!!!! I just spent 20 minutes sobbing into my hubby's shirt. I'm kind of in disbelief. Had written off the option because I messed up the formatting of my writing sample, so I guess this means that those things don't matter too much. I'm so excited! Hoping all of you who applied to OSU hear back soon!
  23. Well, good. Thanks. Also, as a terrified first-gen with little-to-no help and guidance aside from my mentors, GC has been one of the best things for my sanity, so I can't say that sticking around (regardless of outcome) would be a bad thing for anyone. Side note: a good friend of mine (applying from UG at my current uni) just heard from Oxford's MST (I think something to do with comp lit, too?) program. She got in. So maybe English acceptances from there will be rolling in soon?
  24. Yes. Here's another easy way to get involved, I sent my emails yesterday: http://www.nhalliance.org/help_us_nip_efforts_to_defund_neh_in_the_bud?utm_campaign=blueprint_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_source=nhalliance
  25. And yes, I'm clearly #TeamImogen, though I won't judge!
