  1. Definitely my undergrad - I was involved in a few clubs, sometimes participated in the whole college party thing (though I certainly didn't go to as many parties as other friends did), volunteered around the community, played in the university orchestra, and also attended several football games every year (student section too). I also worked with the student government which was a fun experience. As far as the academics go, classes were certainly more tough in undergrad than grad since I was often enrolling in a maximum number of units per semester (it was a poor attempt to graduate a semester earlier - I'm glad I stuck through all 8 semesters) and the undergrad courses were far more competitive. While I had some difficulty adjusting to my undergrad school for the first two years of my life, everything came together during the latter half, and my life and everything I achieved during those last two years is simply priceless.

  2. Oh gosh, I just had my first real fake out moment.

Email from one of my programs with the subject: "Thank you for applying for admission to Fake Out Department"

Thought it was a generic rejection email, but nope, it was a link to an applicant survey to "improve the admission process." The irony!

Oh man... I'd be so annoyed by that fake out moment. Reminds me of that time when I was applying for undergrad programs as a high school senior, and one of the university's honor programs sent me an email which I thought meant I was accepted (since it has been two months after I submitted my application), but nope, it was just a "thank you for applying" letter.

  3. I only have one application out at the moment as my remaining others are either due March or have rolling admission -- I applied for general EEB programs in behavioural endocrinology research groups. Fingers crossed! This reminds me of when I applied for my M.Sc.. The wait then was just as bad. I suppose it's better this time around in that I know I have a better chance because of networking and experience and whatnot.

Spreading the good vibes and luck all around!

Best of luck to you!! I also remember the torturous waiting game when I applied for masters a few years ago... I didn't get my first interview & acceptance until April (It was also a rolling admission). At the same time, you'll know that until you actually receive a rejection letter you are still being considered for admission!

  4. I almost have a masters. I'll be getting mine in May. You can apply for the NSF GRFP if you have pursued less than 12 months of full-time graduate study as of August, or less than 24 credit hours if part-time. Basically, when you enter your second year of grad school it's your last opportunity.

Ah okay. Sadly that doesn't apply for me since I have a masters that took two years to complete... oh well as long as my POI has funding...

  5. It's sex smothered brain candy.  If you read it as a light distraction read it's fine. As meaningful literature it's pretty much crap.

Yeah that's what I thought lol. Okay I guess I'll look for other new books to read instead

  6. I watched the first season of game of thrones. It was a slow start, but it got better as the season progressed. Seasons 2 and 3 have been sitting around for months, but I just haven't had the desire to watch them. I prefer the books, which I've only read 2.5 of because I have a hard time reading chapters that are from the point of view of annoying characters. I am genuinely interested in what happens to some, but others I wish would just die already (and there's a good chance of it happening eventually). I sometimes feel like the draw is the copious amounts of violence and sex rather than the actual story, so people who aren't into that will have a difficult time getting into it. That's probably why I like the books better.

Also, while I'm not sure it falls under the popular category, I really don't like the channel Syfy. There's never anything good on, mostly just cruddy B-movies. Back when the channel was called Sci-Fi, there were a lot of cool show on (Farscape, Eureka, etc) and good miniseries and movies. Plus reruns of old science fiction shows.

I did hear that the Game of Thrones books are much better than the TV series (books I might check out).

Speaking of which, 50 shades of gray seems to be a huge hit everywhere, but is the book really that good as it's acclaimed? Not sure if I'm really interested in reading that one unless someone can convince me that it is an absolute must haha...

I think Syfy's shows went downhill in the recent years, which strangely coincided with their name change from SciFi to syfy (I remember reacting "wth, seriously?!?"). I used to watch a little bit of Ghost Hunters and Destination Truth, but Ghost Hunters focused mostly on drama between those paranormal investigators and Destination Truth never found any weird creature they were looking for in any episodes (maybe except for that bigfoot episode).

  7. Being from NY I'm used to snow... Here in central PA we get a few inches and everyone loses their minds. Although I do dislike snow after living my whole life in the Northeast :P

Speaking of seeking warmth, I actually lived for several years in Florida, and I remember how I was beyond ecstatic to move there (I was living in the Pacific Northwest at the time) since I'd be surrounded by beach, palm trees, year-round warm weather (maybe except for brutally hot/humid summers), snorkeling/scuba hotspots, etc. While living down there I never thought I'd come to realize this but the year-round warm weather kind of got tiring (at least for me)... it wasn't long until I realized that I really did miss distinct seasons (especially during fall and winter, which in Florida felt more like May or June in the northern states lol). It's interesting how a bunch of my friends back in the Pacific Northwest were extremely jealous that I moved to Florida and were talking about how they want to move there permanently, but I guess you never know unless you live there for a certain period of time. I don't regret living down there at all, but I don't think I'll choose FL as my permanent home state if I have a choice (that's just me though).

  8. Oh I forgot these three:

-Game of Thrones (honestly I'm not even sure why it's so captivating lol)

-Frisbee golf aka disc golf (played it several times, it's boring, but pretended to enjoy so not to disappoint my friends)

    -Hotdogs
