Thanks @scarvesandcardigans! I ended up emailing someone else at UVA and got a really nice reply in under 10 minutes. Emailed someone else at UNC and was told I'd find out in early April (so late!). I think I'll withdraw my applications and accept an offer for an MA. I'm so excited and I think this is the best fit for me!

April 15 is the hard deadline for accepting an offer, but you can always ask for more information from specific schools where you've been accepted. A couple of years ago I had to call and email the U of Ariz to find out my status around April 15; I had been rejected. So some schools do not have good process, then again maybe I had been on a waitlist? Who knows.

erasingdinosaurs reacted to cokitty in Silence in the beginning of March... game over?
So it's now the beginning of March and I have yet to hear from 4 programs (UCLA, UIUC, U Southern California, and Northwestern).  Is it game over or should I still hold on to hope?  I'm feeling pretty hopeless right now like I'm being shut out this cycle.  Allegedly UCLA has sent out admissions (not confirmed but allegedly) and Northwestern has 1 result on the gradcafe results page but no results posted from UIUC, UCLA, or USC.

I know that Rutgers has made their "definitely no" decisions already, so if you haven't heard from them that's good news!
Also heard from UT Austin last night. Generic email to check MyStatus, and the decision says 'denied,' which I think is interesting. Not upset though. Has anyone heard anything new?

I ended up emailing UPenn (very impatient haha - i just want to know already!) and they said they'd have their decisions by early March.

I am kind of starting to worry because I have yet to hear from UNC Chapel Hill.

MA club Jajaja ! I decided to do the MA thing as well. I figure it will give me some time to figure out what I want to do. For me, for example, I'm not sure whether I want to PhD in Hispanic linguistics, Second language acquisition, or linguistics in general. I'm sure doing the masters first will give me some clarity.

    Hi!
No, that´s fine. Most offers move around the 20K, except for UVA (where apparently money grows out of trees), which offers 26K and UNC, which offers 15K (whaaaat?).
For those of you thinking of the M.A., I also did an M.A. before applying to grad school (I have the feeling I´m probably a little bit older than many of you) and feel that it helped me a lot to figure out what kind of research I want to do and so on. For me was the best thing to do.

erasingdinosaurs reacted to Bhu_It in How do BA/BS and MA/MS applications stack up against each other?
In STEM, I know that PhD admission standards are higher for applicants with Master's degree as compared to fresh BS graduates. Committees expect MS graduates to have more research experience and publications. They are evaluated separately from the BS graduates. Likely the admission process is similar in your field as well.

I would assume the masters degree applicants are considered separately from the bachelors applicants. I know in my field, it is very uncommon to go from a BA/BS to a Ph.D/Ed.D so most of the time, at the doctoral level, they are masters degree applicants. However, I do know some who offer Ph.D/Ed.D for those with both bachelors and masters and they evaluate them differently with a different set of criteria. I guess it depends on the schools individually.

Going back to what we were talking about last week, I emailed one of my programs today, asking for a general timeframe of when I could expect an admissions decision. They were very nice about it, and told me not to worry at all about asking that kind of question...and they gave me the information I needed. So, I wouldn't worry too much about emailing and asking for updates.
