  1. @bubusaur Cool! Did you call or email Janelle when you accepted, or did you just reply on the application page?
  2. Just when I thought all hope was lost yesterday, I found out that I was moved off of the wait list for SLC! I just accepted the offer today. Will anyone else on this thread be attending?? And to everyone who didn't get in this year, I'm really sorry- I feel you. It can be discouraging to go through the interview process only to be turned down. But you should be proud of yourself for making it this far! Remember that not everyone is offered an interview, so you are a competitive applicant already! Your committment and dedication will only shine through when you apply again, plus you have more time to beef up your CVs.
  3. Congrats on all of the offers! I got rejected from Toronto and UBC, so I'm feeling pretty bummed. I'm wait listed at SLC, but I'm not too hopeful at this point. Looks like I'm going to be a second year applicant.
  4. Has anyone heard from McGill yet?
  5. The program is at UMich. I've thought about it a lot, and I think my best option is to decline. My reasoning is mainly that I don't want to waste anymore of their time. Even if they accommodated me with a Skype interview (which I think is very unlikely), I would probably decline any offer of admission anyways because I don't think I can afford the tuition and living expenses. I also think that if I decline the interview, then another candidate that does have the means to attend their program could take my spot. However I'm not sure what the best way to go about backing out of my interview is. I want to be polite and gracious, and I definitely don't want to burn any professional bridges. I think I'm going to send an email thanking them for considering me for a spot in their program, and outline why I will no longer be attending the interview. It sucks because I like the program a lot, but closer scrutinization of the costs have made me realize that their program isn't the best fit for me in my current situation.
  6. My concern is that even if I do the interview, I don't think it would be financially feasible for me to attend the program. Also, travelling down to do the interview is already an expense and I feel like I would be wasting everyone's time. I just wish I had considered these things before I hastily accepted the invitation to interview.
  7. Hey everyone! I just wanted to share this Ted talk about genetic counselling with you all. Jacyln provides a great summary of what genetic counsellors do, and also shares some powerful insight into the challenges and rewards of the profession. I think this video is useful to share with anyone who would like to learn more about genetic counselling. I liked it, and I hope you enjoy it as well!
  8. My U of T interview is March 1st-2nd. Initially, it was supposed to be the 15th-16th as well, but I was asked to switch my dates to accommodate for an applicant who will be out of country. Looks like I just missed you!
  9. I applied to seven schools this application cycle (all for the same program). I was offered to interview at a school that is my last choice solely due to financial concerns. But, because this was the first program to get back to me and offer me an interview, I quickly accepted. Since then however, I've been invited to interview at several of the other programs I applied to, and now I am considering declining the interview that I was initially offered. The problem I have with this, besides the fact that I've already accepted the offer to interview, is that the program was very accommodating and helpful when I was planning my visit and I would feel super shady cancelling now. The interview in question isn't until March 21st. So, I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation before, and if anyone has suggestions on how to politely decline an interview offer after it has already been accepted. Thank you.
  10. @AspiringGC that sounds like a great opportunity! I hope a spot opens up for you in the course
  11. @SJMcGC Thank you for replying! I suspected it would be more casual, but I'd hate to show up underdressed.
  12. I know there is a lot of discussion about what to wear at the interviews, but does anyone have any idea of how we should dress if we are invited to meet with the program beforehand? Three of my interviews include some kind of separate orientation or dinner/lunch meeting the day before, and I'm not sure if this is an opportunity to dress more business casual than I would at the actual interview.
  13. Got a call from University of Toronto today as well See you there @Cricket643 and @.Aku.!
  14. Thanks. It was total oversight on my part... I am frustrated, but I suppose the only thing to do now is move on and focus on my other applications.
  15. I just checked my application page and realized that one of my referees never submitted their letter of recommendation, which is probably why I have not heard from Manitoba It was the last school I applied to, and I was so happy to be done with applications that I forgot to remind my referee so I guess it's partly my fault. Damn it.
  16. No problem. I'm in the same boat! Also, I noticed in your signature that you have an interview at Manitoba... if you don't mind me asking, when did they get back to you?
  17. I have also heard nothing from UofT, for those of you who are wondering. If they are following the same schedule as last year, then UofT should extending interview offers very soon! As far as UBC goes, I sent them an email on Monday to ask when they will be sending us a confirmation email, and they responded that it will be sometime this week.
  18. I was in a similar situation with one of the schools I applied to, where I wasn't able to go to attend the last available option. In then end they were super accommodating, and got one of the local applicants to switch their interview date. I hope it works out for you!
  19. Has anyone who signed up for an interview with UBC received any sort of confirmation email from them?
  20. Mark me down as interested too! robyn.hebert1@gmail.com
  21. Ahh! That would be so so so so SO helpful! I have no idea what to expect. I read the entire thread from 2016 applicants on GradCafe too and a lot of them say its MMI style and pretty straightforward and pleasant. They said there's a lot of scenario questions but I don't know if it's going to be some crazy ethical type or some difficult and heart-wrenching type. (Not to scare anyone but I hear Stanford's interview is horrifying) I've been trying to prepare for the interviews by brainstorming some questions that may crop up. Disclaimer: I haven't attended an interview yet, so I can't confirm if these questions will actually make an appearance in any of the interviews. However, they are questions that I have seen on the 2016 forum, and from other sources around the web. With that said, here's the list of the questions I've come up with so far- Use them to prepare if you'd like! Tell me about yourself Why do you want to become a genetic counselor? What is a genetic counselor? How did you learn about genetic counseling? How did you prepare for this interview? Why do you want to attend this specific program? Is there anything on your academic record that you would like to address? How do your experiences make you an ideal candidate? Tell me about a difficult case that you observed (for those who have shadowed a GC) How would you describe the colour green to a blind person? How would your worst enemy describe you? What is your greatest strength/weakness?
  22. @adragonisnoslave Congrats on your interview offer! And I'm sorry to hear about OH State. To edit your signature, go to the top right of the screen to the drop down menu beside your name. Then select "Account Settings." Hope that helps! It took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure it out haha.
  23. Waiting to hear back from GC programs: #GCapplicantprobs?
  24. Thank you so much @No1992! I just checked the sign-up page (it's an anonymous doodle poll), and it looks like 25 people have signed up so far. On UBC's website, it does say they usually invite between 25-30 applicants for interviews. It also says that the deadline to sign up for an interview time is tomorrow, so I don't know if they will still be sending out invitations.
