  1. School: Texas A&M University

    Area/degree: Counseling Psychology PhD

Rationalization: Other applicants were more competitive.

Comment: Honestly, the whole process did not go well for me.

Coping tactics: With all of the bad experiences I had during interview weekend, I consider it fate that I'm not going there.

  2. That is very helpful to know. I have health needs and can't comfortably take on a lot of debt. I have no idea if the school in mind could possibly adjust the funding, but I am definitely sad that it's the one thing holding me back.

I will bring it up and see what happens. My reason is pretty clear, but I'm not sure if the school can add to it.

  3. I applied to a doctoral program in Louisiana. I love it to death, and gladly would go except the funding is very low. Especially coming from Texas, the funding for students here is over 2x the amount.

I have talked to students in grad school in LA but I really don't want to accrue a large amount of federal loans. Does anyone have any ideas of the funding options in the state?

  4. For bags: My mom lent me a great black bookbag. It's not giant, just wide enough to fit my leather portfolio/notebook and everything else. I can easily tuck it under a chair.

As for hair: Mine is medium length, but I'm pulling half back. I'm thinking of doing a half french braid around the crown, cute and also I won't need to fidget with it. For the social, I'm wearing it wavy.

    Hello!

I am graduating from Cleveland State University's MA in Clinical Psychology this May. I have had Research Assistantship all 4 semesters which has led to 7 posters, 4 at national conferences and 3 at regional conferences! It's a pretty competitive program (around 100+ applicants each year) and the faculty members really want to help you establish clinical and research experience to get into Ph.D programs. To put this into perspective, I graduated from a competitive undergraduate university with 3 years of research experience and applied to clinical programs in 2015 with zero interviews. I reapplied to Ph.D programs and I am interviewing at 9 different schools. Some say that if you need to advance your research experience you should find an RA position in a research lab, but my education was funded, I gained a ton of research experience, and some of my courses will transfer into the Ph.D programs I've applied to.

    Good luck!

That's great! That's exactly what I'm looking for in a program. And very great that you have presented so much research.

Hi all, it's my first time applying counseling psychology. I noticed that most of you are discussing phd program. But I applied to 3 master program: Minnesota twin city, Ohio University, and University of Oregon. I don't know how difficult/competitive to get in a master program of counselling psychology. I haven't heard anything yet. Do you think it's necessary to apply to more programs? Because some master programs have relatively later deadline, and I still have time to apply.

Most of the Master's programs in Counseling psych will be less competitive, but they still may not take a large number of applicants. The ones I have seen at top universities take a max of 10 students. The selection criteria will be a little less than doctoral. IMO I would say applying to more programs would be a good idea. I have applied to 2 schools for both the doctoral program and the master's program. One rejected me for both, the other invited me to interview for their counseling program.

The good thing about Master's acceptance is that they likely will require less research experience.

  7. Then you have to sort of look at their reputation. Most of the MS programs in Clinical Psych that I have seen are in smaller branches of major universities. Although, even Harvard and some of the Ivy's have programs, but they may not necessarily fit your goals. The one I am interested in is a feeder program for medical Clinical doctoral programs, and also can prepare you for licensure.

How did y'all find programs? I'm having such a hard time researching for legit programs online.

My method was arduous, but I ended up searching for all of the universities in states I was interested in, then searching their graduate Psychology programs. Another option would be searching ex. "Graduate psychology programs Mississippi." It was fairly easy to find M.S. programs in my home state, luckily. There aren't any rankings I have seen for Master's programs in Clinical Psych.

Regardless of what the interview sites tell you about having meals/snacks always ALWAYS have your own snacks and water with you!  This is especially important if you're on a special diet, have allergies, or are just plain picky.  Some programs are not very organized and you may have so many things scheduled for your day that you get 5 minutes to scarf something down.  Or you may find that their understanding of your dietary needs is horribly inaccurate or the special meal requested for you is forgotten or still not something you can eat.  Some places also just have terrible food regardless of what is served.  I just carried my purse with whatever I needed in it, but other applicants carried messenger bags or briefcases.  Most programs also load you down with swag.....pamphlets, brochures, random office supplies, water bottles, etc so having a bag is helpful anyway.  Oh and have kleenex, cough drops, and hand sanitizer.

Thank you- great advice! I have severe food allergies so on top of snacks will pack my emergency kit. Hope I don't need it during the interview weekend. lol

Mine too, but I've been wait listed (and already warned that they RARELY go back to the list), so... onward and upward I suppose lol

Oh no! Clinical Psychology is so stressful and competitive! Fortunately I am very happy about one of my back ups- MS in Clinical Psych to obtain licensure as a psychology associate.

  11. I've applied to a Master's in Clinical Counseling, research psychology, and clinical psychology.

My goal is acceptance in doctoral Counseling Psychology, but my backup plan is the MS in Clinical Psych.

  12. Now that interviews are approaching for many of us, how are you all preparing? I've found a lot of helpful information from the APA, granted for Clinical Psychology interviews. I thought about writing down answers to potential questions all across the board, not memorizing though. Currently studying POI's work as much as is healthy. lol
