  1. Yes it was! Honestly, Yuri was amazing. You could tell he THOROUGHLY read all my materials (unlike CMU and UCLA) and was actually interested in what makes me excited as a director. He asked some typical questions but it felt much more like a conversation between artists than an interview. My nerves were extinguished within minutes. At this point, I can't get my hopes up due to the number of applicants, but I left that interview very excited. He said we would hear either way within 10 days and the callback will be end of February.
  2. If it helps, my New School MFA Acting callback (a 24 hour play "fest" with candidate playwrights and directors) was one weekend early March. Granted this was back in 2010 but I do believe the process is still the same.
  3. Interviews went VERY well. My top choice (Iowa) became more of a top choice. Love that program, loved the discussions I had with Alan and the opportunities/projects they'd let me tackle if I were to go. Wow I absolutely HATED UCLA and I felt like they didn't even want me there. Yet they were laughing with the guy in front of me who went 10 minutes over. He started immediately with basically the same stock questions as CMU with no reference to my experience or resume. Then they didn't even look at my portfolio until I asked them if they even wanted to see it! Very strange. Why interview me if you weren't actually interested? I asked about their financial package and it is awful. Won't get a callback and wouldn't go even if they offered it to me. ASU is now a definite contender. Loved the cohort approach and Bill is so nice and experienced in many different forms of theatre. They encourage collaborations between school of film, dance, opera and even science if that's your interest for creating original thesis performance. Added many new exciting faculty members. It does seem a bit devising heavy and not as much emphasis on working with playwrights but I'll definitely be tempted if they are to make me an offer. Not the best financial package but nothing like the debt of UCLA, Columbia, DePaul, CalArts... Happy interviews everyone! I have Yale next week and no word from UT Austin or UCSD...
  4. Yep! Interviewing wirh Iowa, UCLA and Arizona State. Though investigating more into the horrid financial package of UCLA, I'm 95% sure I wouldn't consider it and almost don't want to even waste their time...
  5. On my way to Chicago right now for URTAs! Will I see anyone there? Seeing Hunter & The Bear by PigPen at Writers Theatre tonight!
  6. Just had my interview with CMU! Caden is VERY formulaic and almost impersonal. Mentioned nothing about my resume or previous work. Surprisingly did NOT ask me these big pretentious questions I had heard about in previous threads. Just questions like: What have I seen recently that was influential? What are 3 projects that I'd like to tackle? And Why CMU/why grad school now? He said they narrow it down to SIX people and we'd know by email either way within 3 weeks.
  7. No word from UCSD here either... UGH! Just heard from the admin at UT Austin and we could hear about our status anytime between Feb 6th - March 1st.... seems like an awfully broad spectrum and pretty late in the game since we could technically get offers from URTA schools starting Feb 13th.
  8. Congrats on all the Depaul Love! A friend of mine is in his second year right now and LOVES it! But lord I couldn't undertake that much debt in this industry. Waiting on UCSD and Austin... I'm now thinking that UT Austin said that the interviews would be mid-february, not that we would hear in mid-february... but who knows. I emailed them to get a timeline and the administrator didn't know, but they hadn't even started up classes until this Tuesday the 17th! Perhaps I'll go back into last year's thread to see when they heard...
  9. Here's some advice I just received from a Yale MFA Directing alum whom I've worked with and is currently on the YSD directing faculty: I would say be yourself. Don't try "to be what Yale wants." That won't really work. But be prepared to say passionate, smart things about: -The things you're working on -The things you've done -Why grad school -Something going on in the world -Artists you admire -Anything that makes you YOU I think this is pretty solid advice which can apply to any grad school interview. From my initial meeting with Iowa, they were very interested in what excited me as an artist, why that specific program, what sort of collaborations I would like to pursue during training and what I was looking to achieve.
  10. Still waiting on UCSD and UT Austin. I did get a website view from Austin this week though, so they're at least reviewing applications!
  11. Those things typically go on your media/gallery page on your website. Perhaps link your website on your resume?
  12. Congrats @directorial! Alan is lovely. When is your interview? Sorta gauging when to expect decisions since URTA guidelines say that schools can start sending out offers February 13th...
  13. Just got my call from Yale as well! Friday Feb 3rd for me!
  14. I talked to the head of the program this fall and that is the timeline I wrote in the notes from the conversation. Would love it if it came sooner lol
  15. Don't remember if I mentioned this, but UCSD extended their deadline to today... so if anyone was thinking about them but didn't apply then YOU HAVE TODAY! UT Austin let me know that things won't move forward until mid-february (MORE WAITING ) Probably won't hear back from UCSD until then either.
  16. @Loose.tap.screws YOU BETTER CALL THEM BACK! Looks like yale calls might be happening today?
  17. Yale often does their interviews in waves. Two years ago, I had friends who were in a small last minute interview day when Liz came to NYC the first week of january and then friends who got calls three weeks later. We think the first group were the ones she was extremely interested in, but none of my friends made it to the callback. Also this year, they had a city preference in the application so I'm thinking the ones who clicked Chicago & San Fran will be called later? I clicked Chicago and no call for me yet.
  18. Welcome to the group @Prospero!!! Where all did you apply? Haven't heard anything from yale (didn't apply to columbia due to the lack of financial package), BUT someone from Connecticut has viewed my website twice in the last 3 weeks... Did get my CMU interview scheduled, nothing exciting since every applicant gets a first interview. Thanks to the past forums on here, I know to be prepared for the big (possibly pretentious) questions they ask.
  19. "Production Book" is a weird term to me, but I assumed that it was the director's personal notebook for each show. Including dramaturgical research, creative ideas, images, notes, etc. Anyone else have any thoughts?
  20. hey @kathwantsanmfa! I'm over on the MFA Directing thread and thought I'd give some insight. Having done an MA in Acting at a drama school in the UK that worked with the RSC and The National, just think about the future. Think about where you see yourself (besides hollywood, broadway or the RSC)....Where do you see yourself after the program? MA degrees are not terminal, thus you cannot teach. Teaching is how most performers survive between gigs (except soul detroying restaurant jobs), so I would look more heavily into the MFA programs. Also, I was the last graduating class that could apply for a post-study work visa. So you will not be able to stay in England after graduation unless you get married. No theatre will be able to work sponsor you, not even The National. Just some things to think about! Good luck!
  21. @nine15am I've always been told that undergrad work on a resume is fine until you get your MFA or until it's unnecessary. Pick the highlights and don't let it be the majority of your listings if you've been out of school for a while.
  22. Congrats @mcneelal! Will you be in Chicago or NYC? I got URTA interviews to all I submitted to except UC Irvine so I have interviews with Iowa, UCLA and Arizona State! I didn't submit a letter of interest to ASU because of the requirement of production proposal of Clean House, but I had been emailing the head of the program a few times so maybe he wants to meet me in person. I suppose this means I shall have to work on Clean House anyways... HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!
  23. Forum has gone quiet! Hope all your URTA applications are sent in and other applications are going well! As many have said before... I get so nervous/excited with every email I receive even though I wouldn't hear back any time soon! I've decided to withdraw my application from York/Canadian Stage. I made it to the next step, the program seems great and the work at CanStage is exciting, but I want to focus my attention and money on interviews in the US. I did also put a tracker on my website and saw that someone in London looked at my website through my URTA application, but I didn't apply to East15 so that's interesting... I but schools can see everyone's common packet even if they didn't apply there.
  24. Welcome @Loose.tap.screws This will definitely be a PROCESS! Hopefully a happy one for us all. Just submitted my URTA packet with letters of interest for Iowa, UC Irvine and UCLA. Did anyone else think the selection of MFA Directing schools this year is very limited/small comparatively? Considering there are probably 40+ programs in the US? Also sent off ALL my other applications for UT Austin, YSD, UCSD and CMU. Now the waiting game begins.....
  25. @Directorial looks like we have a very similar list! Will you be doing URTAs? Where did you apply last year? Do you know about CalArts funding? it seems very expensive like UCLA but do they have tuition waivers/assistantships? I can't seem to find info on that. I love both of their focus on interdisciplinary new work, but I cannot go into crazy debt again. Northwestern is on my list, but even though Anna Shapiro runs the program, I talked to the program administrator and there is surprisingly little amount of time spent on new work with the MFA playwrights... Sending in my Yale application today... NERVOUS! And my UCSD, UT Austin and CMU app later this week.
