  1. Hi Sarah, Sorry! I've been quite inactive on this forum. I am enrolled in a class with a professor in the admissions committee that says the admit people who are already doing the work but need the degree. As long as you demonstrate you are critical, have been doing similar work, etc. you should be fine.
  2. I'm surprised that this forum has become relatively inactive for Canadian MSW programs! I was actually logging on to see how future peers/colleagues were doing with their applications, and because one of my professors on UofT is part of the admissions committee and gave me the inside scoop on what they look for. Ah well.
  3. http://tcard.utoronto.ca/ for how to register for a t-card, and there is also a link on the side that explains how to set up a UTorID. Once you have your UTorID you will use that to log into your email at www.mail.utoronto.ca -- your email will automatically be your full name: firstname.lastname@mail.utoronto.ca I think you can create your UTorID now, but sometimes there are weird dates for when you can get your T-Card (last year some people had to wait till July, I already have a t-card because I did my undergrad there, but I think I could only get it some time in the summer months as well). Here is the contact info for the T-Card office: Downtown Toronto (St. George) Campus Koffler Student Service Centre214 College Street, First floor 416-946-8047 tcard.office@utoronto.ca Monday…………. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday………… 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Wednesday……. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Thursday……….. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Friday…………… 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
  4. Change to decision made a week after ROSI changed to invited
  5. Got an email from Laurier at 12:04pm that I was accepted into the 2 year program. My last name starts with "C", but will be declining it to accept UofT's 2 year.
  6. To answer your question of what I bring to the table that is unique: 2 years working on a First Nations reserve that is remote, fly-in only, is under a boil water advisory, recovering from a state of emergency over drug/alcohol abuse, and has high rates of arson, FASD, and other mental differences. Contributing to my acceptance would be: my knowledge and experience with systemic discrimination, working with indigenous groups internationally, my grades (4.0), my research mark (84%), and my community involvement outside of work (coach hockey, baseball, and track on the reserve; run girls' group on the reserve; and fundraise for community initiatives on the reserve). Personally, I also think that my SOP was very different and out of the box. PM me if you'd like to know what I mean, I do not mind sharing it on a one-to-one basis.
  7. @lindaMSW Please don't feel discouraged that you did not get on the wait list and were rejected in February. I am sure that there are many people who were rejected in February. The thing about this forum is that we're maybe ~50 out of a possible 800 or so who apply to the program. If they rejected you from the 2 year MSW in February, you must not have met some minimum criteria and you should inquire as to what that may have been to improve your chances for next time. I think it is really important to look at what UofT's program is looking for. Look at their mandate for the MSW program and see if you can get experience in line with that. Try to upgrade courses because they do heavily weigh research experience/grades, but do not forget they also equally care as much about your experience and how you articulate it (I have minimal research experience but had high grades in my research class, and had a ton of experience that were out of the box). Put yourself in a position where UofT (or any grad school you are trying to get into) would be a FOOL to turn you down. Hit every mark they're looking for and excel in it. And make sure they are aware of how lucky they would be to have you and your experience. It's not what they can do for you or what you hope to gain from them -- because they know they are a top tier school -- it's about what you can bring to them. Whether that is your experience, grades, lived realities, USE IT in your SOP. Make your SOP as true to you as you can, and get it proof read. I had a friend in law school read over my SOP and ripped it to shreds, but it forced me to be intentional and think deeply about not only why this is important to me but why I am important for them. The finished product brought my professor to tears and she said it was the most heartfelt SOP she had read -- not for sympathy reasons, but for the risks I've taken and experiences I had that makes me an ideal candidate for them. For anyone struggling with the decision that UofT made, think of it as a second chance to take some risks and become a candidate they cannot turn down.
  8. Waterloo, York, and Lakehead offer one year BSW. I think there might be a couple more but I forget
  9. Received my package in the mail from UofT, it was mailed to downtown Toronto and took two days for anyone wondering!
  10. Not so! Scroll page a page or two, someone was accepted without their ACORN or ROSI saying so. Side note: both my ACORN and ROSI say I am accepted. Just waiting on the letter now.
  11. I am in the same boat as you! I was told that we have four weeks to sign and accept the program, and then until June 1st to pay!
  12. Thank you (and wishingonuoft) for providing some really helpful insight!!! I was debating the use of a car or not, so that answer was particularly helpful. I'm currently working in a school and absolutely adore it, so I hope that I get placements within one of the boards. You guys are so motivating!! I'm so appreciative.
  13. That's really helpful to know, thank you so much!! I am curious about the geographic locations of placements: are most of them located in downtown Toronto? I'm actually hoping to do a placement in a school board or government office setting!
  14. I appreciate all the insight you gave, but I must admit I appreciate that your agenda prints "National Candy Corn Day" more
  15. Hey! I'm not sure if you can answer this since it would have been two years ago for you, but how long did they give you to accept your offer into the two year program?
  16. Whenever someone gets their admissions letter for this round, can you let me know when the deadline to pay and reserve your spot in the program is? I'm not currently living at home, and my Dad is selfishly going on vacation for a month in the Caribbean. How dare he in my time of need! (Sarcasm).
  17. Just quoting to keep track for everyone accepted in this first round! I hope I didn't miss anyone (including my above post!)
  18. I was also accepted via ACORN!! Former UofT student, and my last name starts with "C". Quoting former posters who go in for good measure (so that current and future posters do not have to keep scrolling backwards to find this information). CONGRATULATIONS FUTURE PEERS, AND GOOD LUCK THOSE STILL WAITING!! Edit: oops I guess it won't let me tag more than two posters..
  19. I agree with you to an extent, however as a public forum it will be difficult for future readers to know that someone may have intentionally released inaccurate information. I think skepticism is healthy, and as long as it is constructive and not attacking an individual it should be understood as part of the conversation about admissions. None the less, no one is attacking anyone, but I think we are divesting again from the topic which is what got the last thread locked. As the mods suggesting, ignoring the user is one method moving forward and I suggest another: let us, in our little thread community, fully utilize the downvote option versus calling out individuals we disagree with from here on out. Should future readers wish to do their own research to validate claims, they will be able to use the amount of +/- on a comment, as well as past conversations, to make their own conclusions. Hopefully this will satisfy mods and readers who do not want to stray further. We are almost at the end here folks, let's get through this admissions cycle together.
  20. I believe an important thing to consider is if you want to use these places as a reference in the future. I believe not disclosing your application to the summer seasonal job is acceptable since that is a temporary job. However the "real job" might have a problem if you applied to schools, were waiting to hear back, yet did not disclose this to them during the interview stage. I think it is definitely in your right to not tell them (I do not think I would, personally), but if you think that once you get in and you tell them that you will be leaving to pursue school would upset and strain your relationship with them, then it might be best to be upfront with them -- especially if you hope to use them as a reference in the future. However, totally your call and you are the best person to feel out the situation! Trust your gut. Just wanted to throw my two cents out there about the reference situation in case that is relevant to you.
  21. Ask for an extension from UBC!! I mentioned a few posts back, but I called Angela and 2 year results will not be released until end of March to early April
  22. This is such a great thread. I am addicted to stationary and organization!! In-Class Notes: I ALWAYS sit at the front of class and use my laptop to type up notes. I separate my notes via indentation and bullets, creating new paragraphs for every new thought. Sitting in the front really helps me focus (and also forces the professors to recognize me, so when I have extenuating circumstances they have generally been more lenient with me). After taking notes on my computer, I will either (a) edit them for corrections that night IF there is no exam for the class or (b) re-write them by hand because it helps me study better. If I write them by hand, I am always using Staedler's fine tip markers. I write on a spiral-bound notebook (usually from Chapters/Indigo) that has detachable pages. I colour coordinate and decorate the hell of my notes because I am very visual learner. E.g. week 1 will be orange and font will be block letters, week 2 will be pink with cursive letters, etc. It seems time consuming, but when you're enjoying what you're writing about because it is aesthetically pleasing/satisfying, it makes studying a breeze. Readings: Highlighters all day, every day. I start with yellow, so that if I decide to go over that reading at a later date for a different purpose, I can use a stronger colour over the yellow to make "new" highlights that are relevant to what I am doing with the reading. I will also use my Staedler fine tip markers to make notes in the margins. I usually add my own thoughts and critiques when I'm writing, or make a direct reference/comparison to another text. When studying/writing papers with these readings, I will comb through my highlights and notes, and use see-through page tabs to put directly over the sentences or comments I've made. This way, I know what material I want to use and do not have to spend my time referencing back to all the material to find something. Also, as someone else has mentioned before, I also keep track of poignant sentences, phrases, or words in a document. I will create a chart with three headings: reading, page number, and quote. This has saved me a lot of time writing as well in the long run. I only use this method when I am feeling overwhelmed with readings, otherwise it just seems like added "work" that can easily be achieved with the see-through tabs. Edit: Also, if you search studyblr on pintrest, instagram, tumblr, etc. you will see the most beautiful notes to inspire you!
  23. I called Angela at UofT FIFSW (because I had questions about changing my address) and she said the decision for two year applicants will not go out until the end of March to early April. The waiting continues...
  24. I feel like I've read in past years that 3500 is recommended for both, but I could definitely be wrong..
