Oh yeah, here is an awesome list of scholarship websites that's been compiled by Northwestern. http://www.northwestern.edu/fellowships/info/external.htm

It depends on if you're in print or broadcast. But, I know the local STATE NAME Broadcast Associations often offer scholarships. Also, check out the big companies like Clear Channel and so on. They sometimes offer them. You may have to have worked there or be related to someone, but sometimes they'll surprise ya.

I I were a subject in a research study, it'd be a study on: 1. Lifetime effects of drinking Diet Coke 2. Americans with Eastern Hemisphere sleeping patterns 3. Anxiety caused by premature expectation of application updatum (I just made that up) (grin) 4. Procrastination 5. Couples with opposite work schedules

I had a cold when I took the GRE. They let me bring in cough drops, but I had to take them out of the wrappers and show the lady that there were just cough drops. It was awkward.

I just wish that if they know they aren't going to get around to reading them until late January, the deadlines weren't until late January. As it stands, a couple of applications really got in the way of my end-of-semester grading, paper writing, etc. I know they haven't even looked at the apps yet. Making them due early just messes up everything else and adds to the wait time. Wish we could change it, but then that's just a silly wish. Sigh.

LOL I had a similiar experience with one school. They sent me a letter saying they didn't get 2 of my transcripts. I called one of my Universities and the awesome lady there looked into and said, "They receive electronically. Would you like the name, email and time the person who received it signed off on it?" Absolutely. I wrote them back with that information, and suddenly, my application was all set. This app was due Jan 1. They got my transcript December 18th, and sent me that email January 10th!! So, yeah. I am thinking those offices are most likely overworked, understaffed, etc. But it sure is frustrating.

1. Chuck Norris doesn't apply to schools. Schools apply to Chuck Norris. 2. Chuck Norris only needed 1 LOR. It was written by Chuck Norris. 3. Chuck Norris' GRE scores: Verbal - No. Quantitative: Unquantifiable 4. Chuck Norris' Grade Point Average: Nothing is average about Chuck Norris. 5. In lieu of a statement of purpose, Chuck Norris sent photocopies of his fists. 6. When asked about financial support, Chuck Norris replied: How much do you need? 7. Chuck Norris isn't wait listed. Chuck Norris waits for nothing. Ok...that's all I got. Good fun!

I have three superhuman powers, or at least, that's what I call them. 1. I can figure out how to work any cell phone within minutes. This is particularly handy around "older" folks. 2. I get rockstar parking, all the time. Doesn't matter when/where. 3. I remember the words to (pretty much) every song I ever hear. Rap, country, oldies, pop, you name it. My curse: I can't carry a tune to save my life.

I tell you what's pissing me off: My first application was due Dec 1. I see that school doesn't reply until the END OF MARCH! That's 4 Months! That's 1/3 of a year to wait! Conversely, my last school was due Jan 10, and they report in February!!! WTF! For us, the average wait (it appears) is 3 months. I mean, seriously! C'mon people!

<br /><br /><br /> While I can't say that I agree with you on this point entirely, I think my intention and yours are of the same cloth. That's why when I started this thread I framed it as "good fun" and named my "favorites." I think laughing at the people who (sometimes try to) hurt us is the best way to take the sting out of their comments and to empower ourselves. I typically find moronic, rude comments to be amusing. That is because I am arrogant.

Tired of people asking if I got in...in December

LOL Even better! It would go something like this.... -The answer to the question everyone wants to know. Sputnik, what's your decision?- "Um, this fall, man this is very tough. Um and this fall I'm going to take my talents to....and I'm joining the University of...." -That was the conclusion you woke up with this morning? "That was the conclusion I woke up with this morning." -Why? "Um, Like I said before, um I feel like it's going to give me the best opportunity to Study. And to Study for multiple years. And not only just to Study in the regular semester or to win 5 grants in a row, or 3 grants in a row. I want to be able to win Fellowships. And I feel like I can compete down there." -Was it always in your plan to study with Prof. X and Prof Y? "You know, I'm looking forward to it. To say it was always in my plans? I can't say it was always in my plans 'cuz I never thought it was possible. But the things that the .... University has done to free up the funding to be able to put theyself in a position this summer to have all 3 of us, um, you know, it was hard to turn down. I mean, you know those are two great professors. Two of the greatest professors we have in the field today. And um, you know uh, you add me and we're going to be a really great team." -

I wish I had a cool story for my username/avatar. I am not Russian. My research has nothing to do with space or astronomy or anything even close to that. I was trying to come up with a username, and I had a radio on. For some reason, they were talking about sputnik, and thus my username was created. For the avatar, I just looked for cool pictures of sputnik. Since I love dogs, I picked this one, on account of the dog. LoL Pretty weak, all around. -
I'm guessing that's a no.

Tired of people asking if I got in...in December

<br /><br /><br /> Since I am not applying to that many schools, I keep joking that I am going to make a video like the football players do, where I have a hat from each school on the table. I will dramatically grab the hat for the school I'm going to pick and put it on. Of course that will only work if I get into more than one school, but it'd be fun. LoL Thats how I am planning to share with people which school I'm going to pick. -

<br /><br /><br /> IF I get in anywhere, I will shout it from the rooftops! And by rooftops, I mean Twitter and Facebook. -
And I just started doing the apartment checking thing, too. LOL

I love all of you. Thank you for making me feel less crazy!

It just occurred to me that watching YouTube videos of the Ph.D. hooding ceremony from my top choice school might qualify me as crazy. God. I was not cut out for waiting. This is going to be a miserable few months at this pace.

If you can give a starting Grad one piece of advice...
sputnik replied to KrissyJ's topic in Officially Grads
As a second year, I started a wiki for everyone in our Master's program (1st and 2nd years) that has answers to basic questions that I asked when I first started: Where's paper for the printer? TA tips, good restaurants in the area, how to use our stupid computer system for grading, etc. I wish I had started it in my first year. I actually learned a lot from other people that posted. And I like to think I helped some first years not feel like idiots when trying to print or find basic supplies. Our department does a crappy job of explaining this stuff, so the wiki has been helpful. -
In Theaters (that I plan on seeing but haven't yet): True Grit, The boxing movie with Marky Mark, Black Swan Just good movies: Inception, Memento, LOTR trilogy, Despicable Me, The Matrix TV shows: True Blood (bet ya can't watch just one. And if you have HBO they are going to re-run all of season three starting tomorrow I think), Dexter, The Walking Dead, Band of Brothers, Generation Kill

I think the reason I'm so worried about Ph.D. apps is only because it stops me from freaking out about the fact that I haven't started my thesis yet. Anyone else about to give it a whirl? I am having major commitment issues. I need to just pick a topic and go with it.
